Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya meets our Head Monk.. Vlog No 126
Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya meets our Head Monk. and presents him with a Buddhist Monks Ceremonial Fan
At observances in which Buddhist monks are in attending, one of the more noteworthy paraphernalia is the detailed and decorative monk's fan. It us used to cover the monk's face as he delivers addresses the devottes at the temple. Originally, monks' fans, called talapatr in Thai, were simpler affairs made from palm leaves, and had short handles. There are a number of theories as to their origin, one of the more practical—if not particularly delicate—being that they were for shielding the monk from the smell of putrefaction. The stench was due to the ancient custom of making monastic robes from the shroud in which a corpse has been wrapped—a symbolic act of forswearing of comfort; the monk would have to remove the cloth, using a small palm fan to cover his nose.
The custom later evolved to carrying fans to observances, in particular to funerals. Another theory is that the fan concealed the faces of monks at gatherings of the laity so that the latter could concentrate on the dharma being preached, rather than be distracted by the monks' visual aspect. A legend in Thailand concerns a disciple of the Lord Buddha, Phra Sangkachai, who was so good-looking that many female members of the congregation fell in love with him. Realizing the effect that he had, Sangkajai prayed to be made unattractive. His wish was fulfilled: in certain monasteries, you will see the seated statue of a fat monk with coarse features.
Thus, monks learned to hide their faces when giving sermons or officiating at ceremonies. Beyond these tales, the Buddha himself carried a fan when he went to preach to his father, King Suthothana, and so the item has become a symbol of spiritual authority. It was perhaps inevitable that such a symbol would evolve from simple palm leaves into beautiful ceremonial fans, now called pad rong.
At first, the fan was an object that ordinary people could themselves make, as an offering to monks of the local monastery. Offerings, of course, were a accepted way of acquiring merit; inscriptions found at Wat Chang Lom and dating to AD 1384 record the presentation of ceremo-nial fans to high-ranking monks. Fans given as offerings began as interwoven bamboo or feathers, but as the greater beauty of the item would affect the degree of merit, there was continuous improvement. Carved ivory might be used, or satin, or silk, enhanced by embellishment and even gems, according to the means and devotion of the individual seeking merit. The ordinary palm-leaf fans waned in use as they appeared less and less fitting.

I've lived here since 2011, in a small village. What I am presenting for your viewing is Life, away from the cities, the tourist traps, the bars and easy girls (or ladyboys even), the influences from western culture, like skyscrapers, Macdonalds, and KFC. I bring you the sights and sounds that farangs (which is what Thais call any foreigner) never experience.
After all the time I have lived here, I call them farangs, too. Because my wife and I have become a part of this village, where everybody knows us, and we know everybody.
This is the Real Thailand.

Dinosaur Daytrip tour - Northeast Thailand (Isan)
Khon Kaen province is famous for dinosaurs and this tour travels to the heart of dinosaur country in the Phu Wiang mountains where several important paleontological discoveries have been made, including two previously unknown species: Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, a 15-meter (49 feet) long sauropod named after Thailand's beloved princess, and Siamotyrannus isanensis, an ancestor of Tyrannosaurs Rex named after Thailand and Isan. This is what accounts for the abundance of dinosaur sculptures in Khon Kaen city. We'll visit the dinosaur museum, stop for photo-ops with life-sized concrete statues, and see some actual fossils still stuck in the bedrock. But, even without the dinosaurs as a draw, Wiang Kao district is a wonderful place to visit. It's a very traditional region with few modern concrete houses and no 7-11s; and once you turn off the short main road you may feel you've taken a small step back in time. Plus the microclimate of the curious ring-shaped mountain range, which has just a single pass leading to its interior, makes the area highly productive, so you'll see lots of fruits and flowers being grown. We'll visit villages where women weave banners to hang in temples and make handbags from recycled coffee wrappers. We'll also climb a soaring tower to take in the awesome 360-degree view of the mountains. The combination of attractions makes this a great tour for both kids and adults.
We also have a two-day Dinosaurs & Dragon Fruits version of this tour.

Sirindhorn dam thailand
Sirindhorn Dam is a clay core rockfill dam, which was built as a branch of the river ships Dome least since 2514, aims to build up to electricity and water supplies for irrigation. There also is a recreation of local neighborhoods, as well as tourists who travel to in order to travel between. Muang. Ubon Ratchathani - Pha Tam National Park neighborhood, too.
To travel to the dam by the most common is immaterial nothing more than to see the views over the dam. , Eat fresh fish from restaurants welfare. , Boat trips, golf, photography leisure lying or sitting in the garden, which is beautifully decorated. If the dam, some of which have floating accommodation are available. Choosing a comfortable stay in the raft waterfront, it is a choice that is not bad as well (the Sirindhorn Dam no Houseboat are available. To stay Rafts must ask around Beach Sirindhorn which is far from the dam, not far away to see. But the survey team tour Com think that the beach Sirindhorn it may not be good enough houseboat stay overnight in much the same. Due largely to the houseboat was abandoned without a guard me) who like to travel in the manner mentioned above. The visit also Sirindhorn Dam would not make you feel like a trip or a time-consuming enough.

Beautiful Beach at Khao Lak
Khao Lak is a series of villages, now tourist-oriented, mainly in the Takua Pa District and partly in the Thai Mueang District of Phang Nga Province, Thailand.
The name Khao Lak literally means Lak mountain. Lak mountain is one of the main peaks in the hilly small mountainous region (maximum height 1,050 meters) within the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park.
The tiny village of Ban Khao Lak, the original beach, Hat Khao Lak, and the bay of Khao Lak (Ao Khao Lak) actually all lie in the Lam Kaen sub-district of Thai Mueang district. But in recent years, presumably for reasons of convenience, commerce and marketing, the generalisation of the name Khao Lak has propagated itself northwards almost as far as the town of Takua Pa.
It is popular for its serene ambiance and as a departure point for liveaboard scuba diving trips to the Similan Islands.
Khao Lak is approximately 60 kilometers north of the island of Phuket along Phetkasem Road, (Thai Route 4), one of four major highways in Thailand, Khao Lak is serviced regularly by buses. Phuket International Airport (HKT) is 74 kilometres south on the island of Phuket.
Though Thailand's economy is mostly export-dependent, Khao Lak remains mostly tourist-dependent, with surrounding agriculture and commercial fishing making up a small contribution to Thailand's overall economy.
Differentiating Khao Lak from neighboring tourist destinations like Phuket are its quiet, up-scale, secluded coastal resorts; uncrowded beaches; family-friendly nighttime environment and provincial ordinances that prohibit structures taller than the height of a coconut palm tree, keeping Khao Lak down to earth (but subject to sprawl).
Khao Lak was one of the coastal areas of Thailand hardest hit by the tsunami resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Many people died including many foreign tourists. The final death toll was over 4,000, with local unofficial estimates topping 10,000 due to the lack of accurate government censuses and the mere fact that much of the migrant Burmese population was not documented nor recognized as legal residents.
Most of the coastal landscape, i.e., beaches, resorts and vegetation, was destroyed by the tsunami. Some replanting programmes have been initiated and a great deal has been accomplished in the rejuvenation of surrounding foliage. Studies suggesting that coastal vegetation may have helped buffer the effects of the waves have ensured that replanting and maintenance of the coastal vegetation have become a priority in the reconstruction of the landscape.
A stark reminder of the force a tsunami can exert; Navy boat 813 (Tor 813) sits almost 2 kilometers away from Bang Niang Beach. It was on patrol, serving as a guard to grandson of the King Bhumi Jensen, as he was riding a jet ski in front of La Flora Resort and despite rescue efforts he could not be saved from the power of the waves. His mother (Princess Ubolratana) and sister survived by fleeing to an upper storey of the La Flora. 813 was carried inland and came to rest opposite Bang Niang's marketplace. The area in which it sits has now been renovated and includes a museum dedicated to the events of Boxing Day 2004.
Shelter built following the 2004 tsunami.
Others among the casualties were well-known Finnish musician and TV-host Aki Sirkesalo and his family, and Imre von Polgar, guitarist for the Swedish rock band The Watermelon Men. Almost four years old at the time, a young girl was swept away at Khao Lak and remained the subject of a media-covered intensive search despite being formally identified in August 2005 as a victim.
Since the 2004 tsunami, an early-warning system has been installed along the affected coastline. In April 2012 it received its most recent test, following an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. Audible warning sirens alerted the local population to the possibility of a tsunami roughly 2 hours before estimated landfall, allowing the populace to move to higher ground inland.
