Portland, Oregon, United States. History, Economy, Climate
Portland, the City of Roses, is the largest city in Oregon and the second largest city in the Pacific Northwest after Seattle. It is a major port in the Willamette Valleyregion of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. The city is noted for its scenic beauty, great outdoors environment, a large number of microbreweries, and its eco-friendly urban planning policies.
Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally consciouscities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks.
LOCATION
The city covers 145 square miles. Portland is the largest city lying between San Francisco and Seattle.
Portland is 60 miles (97 km) east of the Pacific Ocean at the northern end of Oregon's most populated region, the Willamette Valley. Downtown Portland straddles the banks of the Willamette River, which flows north through the city center and separates the city's east and west neighborhoods. Less than 10 miles (16 km) from downtown, the Willamette River flows into the Columbia River, the fourth-largest river in the United States.
HISTORY
The first European contact in the area came from none other than Lewis and Clark, who sailed along the Columbia River just north of where Portland lies today in 1805; after a year of exploration they finally reached the Pacific Ocean just to the west.
POPULATION
Portland is the 26th most populous city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest.
CLIMATE
Portland experiences a temperate climate with both oceanic and Mediterranean features. This climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Of the three most populated cities within the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland) Portland has the warmest average temperature, the highest number of sunshine hours, and the fewest inches of rainfall and snowfall.
Summers in Portland are warm to hot, dry, and sunny. The months are June, July, August and September. The warmest month is August, with an average high temperature of 27.3 °C. Winters are cool, cloudy, and rainy. The coldest month is December with an average daily high of 7.6 °C, although overnight lows usually remain above freezing.
Its climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.
COMMUNICATION
Portland International Airport (PDX) is located 9 mi (15 km) northeast of downtown on the Columbia River.
GOVERNMENT
The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States.
ARCHITECTURE
The city has a lovely blend of historic and modern architecture and many lush parks.
ECONOMY
Portland's location is beneficial for several industries. Relatively low energy cost, accessible resources, north–south and east–west Interstates, international air terminals, large marine shipping facilities, and both west coast intercontinental railroads are all economic advantages.
the steel industry became the city's number one industry for employment. Technology is a major component of the city's economy, with more than 1,200 technology companies existing within the metro. Computer components manufacturer Intel is the Portland area's largest employer, providing jobs for more than 15,000 people
The food, beer, wine and spirits scene is the best on the West Coast and the city has gained a reputation as the Beer and Food Cart Capital of the World. It is, however, still the least expensive large city on the West Coast.

Buses park in Babughat bus terminus - Kolkata
Bus terminal of Babughat in Kolkata with numerous similar buses parked while some buses head out in both directions.
Babughat is name of the one of the many Ghats built during British Raj, along the river bank of Hooghly on its bank on Strand Road at Kolkata side.
The ghat has a tall colonial structure, which is the landing berth of the ghat. It is a fine Doric-Greek style pavilion with huge pillars. The ghat originally known was Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat is now only known by first words Baboo-ghat or Babu-ghat. Babu / Baboo in Bengali means Sahib or gentleman. The ghat is named after Babu Raj Chandra Das, husband of legendary Rani Rashmoni and zamindar of Janbazar, who built it in 1830, in memory of her late husband. A marble tablet beneath the pediment implies that some of the credit for the erection of the ghat must go to Lord William Bentinck as he encouraged such spending with a view to improve public amenities. It is second oldest ghat of Kolkata.
The pavilion today is completely encroached by vendors and pandas. The old colonial structure and stairs leading to river are in various stages of decay and derelict. A section of ghat originally meant for bathing of ladies has turned in to a garbage point. However, ever so, the ghat is bustling with crowds since morning till late evening with people who use it for bathing, puja, religious ceremonies, massage and leisure. During Chhat Puja huge crowd can be seen on Babughat performing their puja. The ghat is also used during Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja rather in all festivals for immersion of idols. People performing Chhat Puja on Babughat, Kolkata.
Further, Babughat is always bustling with passengers, who use it cross the river to reach Howrah Station just across the river and also other areas of Howrah, ferries for which are available at frequent intervals, which take off from the jetty connected to ghat. The water ferry is run and maintained by Inland Waterways Corporation. Ferry services are available from Babughat to Howrah, Chandpal, Telkal Ghat, and Bally.
Also just outside the ghat is a bus terminus. Babughat is one of the main bus terminus in the Kolkata apart from two others located at Esplanade and Karunamoyee. From here you can find inter-state buses going into Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and other cities of West Bengal. Also there is another bus terminus from where you can find buses going in to all directions of Kolkata and its neighborhood. These buses also carry the goods and merchandise to other states and people can find hand-carts and cycle-carts carrying merchandise to be loaded on various buses. The Babughat has vantage advantage as the business and commercial hub of city BBD Bagh is near-by. For this reason Babughat is humming with people and activities throughout twenty-four hours of day and night.
Babughat is a unique junction point of Kolkata where you can find various modes of transport like, bus, ferry and train to go towards various direction, intelligence agencies of India had expressed concern that terrorists are using Babughat as transit point.

Rothbury to Scotsgap - Railworks 3 Cab Ride - V1.0 (work in progress) - Basic track route. (Part 1)
Part 1 of 2.
This video shows the current state of development of a DIY Railworks route of the Rothbury to Scotsgap branch in Northumberland. As of the beginning March 2012 the 13 mile route is more or less complete, unless of course extensions are made along the Wannie line
eastwards to Morpeth, and/or westwards to Reedsmouth, -or even as far as Bellingham! Currently the route has no specialised motive power, trees, fences, stations, signals, huts, bridges or trackside buildings. Nor has any vegetation been planted. I supect this will be a somewhat laborious task given the number of trees at Cragside overlooking the town of Rothbury!
Despite the basic state of the railway it is nevertheless a lot of fun driving trains along a sharply curved branch in rural Northumberland with grades as steep as 1 in 65.
The route was created using the wealth of information about the line in the book; The Rothbury Branch by S.C. Jenkins M.A. published by The Oakwood Press, P.O. Box 122, Headington, Oxford (Locomotion Papers no. 180) (ISBN 0 85361 420 2) - a book I would
recommend to anybody interested in this fascinating branch.
If you are interested in getting involved with helping develop this railway as a more complete route for Railworks please get in touch.
