Lünen ist die größte Stadt des Kreises Unna im westlichen Westfalen im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg. Lünen gehört dem Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe sowie dem Regionalverband Ruhr an. Die ehemals kreisfreie Stadt ist heute ein Mittelzentrum, das durch seine Lage am nordöstlichen Rand des Ruhrgebiets und am südlichen Rand des Münsterlandes sowohl von industriellem als auch von ländlichem Einfluss geprägt ist. Lünen gehörte als sogenannte Beistadt der früheren Hanse an und ist heute Mitglied im Hansebund der Neuzeit.
