TURKEY: Hiking Saint Paul's Trail from Yalvaç to Egirdir
In 2008, the Englishwoman Keith Сlow, has developed a 500-kilometer tourist route - the Saint Paul's Trail. It passes across those places which Saint Paul has visited, or theoretically, could visit during his first missionary trip to Asia Minor.
It is possible to go on the trail during all seasons of the year. But the most popular seasons — spring and fall. As it is too hot in the summer, and in the winter, it is cold.
Valery Shanin and Sergey Oskolkov begin to travel on the Saint Paul's Trail in the town of Yalvaç.
Near this modern Turkish town, ruins of the ancient city of Antioch in Pisidia have remained.
At the time of Saint Paul, the highway from Efes to Syria passed here. The city, which was a that time a part of the Roman Empire, prospered.
Antioch in Pisidia experienced its heyday in the third century AD. The city existed during the time of the Byzantine Empire. But after a series of raids of the Arabs, it was abandoned.
The trail goes among boundless open spaces. It is the end of September. The crop is already reaped and the fields were plowed. But it is still warm like in summer.
On the bank of the lake Egirdir, there is a restaurant - for locals and tourists who are occasionally getting here. They serve only one dish— fried lake fish.
The trail passes by the most known local sight. The huge stone arch surprisingly similar to an old bridge, has arisen in a natural way. As a result of a joint effect of water and wind.
On the east coast of the Egirdir lake, there are no settlements. There is very little room between the rocks and the edge of the water here. Not cleared up. There is no place to plant gardens and build houses.
The Saint Paul's Trail crosses the Lake Egirdir at the narrowest point. Between the beaches are no more than two kilometers. But it is not possible to wade across. The fishermen help out. They transport everyone from one coast of the lake to the other on their boats.
Barla - a small but famous town. In the local prison, the famous Muslim scientist Said Nursi, served sentence. In conclusion, he has written huge works, about 6 thousand pages — comments to the Koran.
In Egirdir, the campaign on the Saint Paul's Trail has come to an end.
And The World without Visas project continues.
Ahead, new travels over the countries, visa-free for Russians.

Travel Turkey - Exploring the Myra Ruins
Take a tour of Myra Ruins in Turkey -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Myra ruins reside in Turkey on the coast of the Mediterranean, near a town that is now known as Demre.
Myra was once a leading city in a collection of ancient Turkish cities known as Lycia.
The ruins here are renowned for the rock-cut tombs and carved amphitheater.
The two sets of tombs are named river-necropolis and ocean-necropolis.
The interiors of many of the tombs resemble log-cabins; the exteriors were once supposedly painted many different colors.
St. Nicholas of Myra, whose striking church is located amidst the ruins, is said to be one of the original inspirations for Santa Claus.
TURKEY: Hiking The Lycian way
In ancient times, a mining area located in the South-West of Asia Minor, in the region of the Teke Peninsula, was called Lycia.
On the West it bordered with Karya,
on the North with Phrygia and Pisidia,
on the East with Pamphylia
and washed by the Mediterranean sea on the South.
The coastline is strongly indented in Lycia.
There are many bays, islets and sheltered coves.
And internal areas are occupied by fertile valleys separated by spurs of the Taurus range.
At the end of the XX century, an Englishwoman named Kate Clow, paved the Lycian tourist route.
It became one of the most popular trail in the world.
Disparate roads, trails and goat paths are connected in a single path, with a total length of 509 kilometers.
The trail is marked with red and white marks.
In some places, they are more common and in others, less common.
And sometimes completely lost or hidden in dense vegetation.
There are numerous signs along the trail.
They show the direction to the nearest historical attractions or large settlements.
You can go on the path without a guide.
Of course, you may end up strayed.
Mutual assistance between tourists helps them to find their way.
The most difficult area to for orientation are the fields lined with pyramids of stones. They are called the ducks.
The Lycian trail streches along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya.
The path goes through forests and mountains, agricultural areas, ancient ruins, villages and abandoned villages.
The route is made so that it can be walked with ease.
It is never more than one day's walk, from one rest area to the next.
On the way, you can easily find restaurants, snack bars and grocery shops.
With the alternative of travelling with a tent, cooking over a campfire and sleeping under the stars.
There are no organized campsites in Turkey.
A tent can be placed anywhere without any restrictions.
It's easy to find drinkable water and wood for the fire.
There are also springs, rivers, lakes and wells.
You can easily ask for water in any home.
The Turks are a very hospitable people.
Especially to foreigners.
Local residents not only willingly undertake to fulfill traveler's requests,
they also invite them for tea, food and shelter.
The trail can be walked at any time of the year.
But the ideal season remain Spring or Autumn.
As Summers are too hot and Winters too wet.
The most popular season on the trail — May holidays.
The Lycian trail begins on the outskirts of Fethiye.
From Oludeniz, she abruptly goes into the mountains.
The path reaches the sea for the first time, in the area of Kabak, on a small pebble beach.
The water is still cold and swimming is unattractive.
But it is already quite comfortable to sleep in the tent. It is not cold.
The Lycians founded their cities in the most convenient places.
Most often on the top of a mountain or on the river bank.
On a hill at the mouth of the Xanthos river in the Mediterranean sea, there was, in ancient times, a port city called Pindi.
There were 23 major cities in Lycia.
One of the most important was Xanthos.
It was founded by settlers from Crete in the VIII century BC.
The City was the capital of the Lycian Union.
And later became a part of the Roman Empire.
Only fragments remain from the high walls.
The port city of Patara was founded in the VI century BC.
It was one of the largest cities in the Lycian Union.
Here lived the Roman Emperor Hadrian.
And on the way to Rome stayed in St. Paul.
The holiday village of Kalkan has replaced the Greek village of Kalamaki.
Now this village, is popular amongst those who prefer a quiet and relaxing holiday by the sea.
On the shore, at the foot of the cliff under Felos, was in ancient times, the port of Antiphellos. It is briefly mentioned in Homer's Illiad. The inhabitants of this city fought on the side of the Trojans.
The ancient city of Myra was in the Lycian Union.
The amphitheatre was designed for 30 thousand seats. We can see many rows of seats of the audience, the scene and arches covered galleries, still perfectly preserved.
Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and the Apostle Paul were visiting here. At the beginning of the IV century, the local Bishop was Nicholas, from Patara. He performed many miracles and was canonized.
The trail goes along the slopes protected the Göynük canyon.

The ruins of Aspendos the travelers reached easily and quickly.
But the beginning of the trail could not be found.

TURKEY: Hiking The Сarian Trail
In ancient times, on the territory of the present Turkish provinces, Mugla and Aydin, was the state of Caria. In the north, it bordered with Lydia, in the northeast — with Phrygia and Pisidia. In the east — with Lycia.
Caria — one of the most picturesque regions of Turkey. There is everything here. Ancient ruins, paved stone caravan roads, hillsides, goat tracks, godforsaken villages, pine woods, olive and almond trees, vineyards and sea beaches.
In 2013, across Caria's territory, was laid a 820-kilometer long walking tourist route.
The Сarian Trail, or in Turkish, Karia Yolu, is marked by standard red-white marks. It is possible to travel on it without a guide. It is enough to acquire the detailed guide with the map.
Yunus Ozdemir, was the ideological inspirer of the Сarian Trail. He personally participated in its creation and description. He is one of the coauthors of the Carian Trail guide. And precisely knows which sites are the most interesting. And which ones, if need be, can be passed.
The Сarian Trail is presently, poorly known. There are no tourists traveling on it. Absolutely none. There are no tourists infrastructures as well. Guesthouses and restaurants are rare. Nevertheless, it is possible to count on the hospitality of locals. But it is better to be autonomous. To travel with a reliable tent and to cook food on a fire.
There is a lot of water. Springs and wells can often be encountered.
Finding firewood is not a problem. It is not forbidden to kindle fires.
It is only necessary to observe the safety measures for fire.
The trail is divided into four sites, differing on their geographical features and landscapes: the Bozburun Peninsula , the Datcha Peninsula, the Ceramic Gulf and Carian remote place.
The Сarian Trail begins near Marmaris. In the resort settlement of Icmeler. And immediately dives into the maze of trails, running through the overgrown slopes covered with pines.
The city of Labranda was part of Caria. In 545 BC, it was captured by the Persians. And in 334 BC - by Alexander The Great's army.
The ruins of Labranda are protected. But security guards almost don't speak English. They don't get enough practice. Foreign tourists rarely pass by here.
All of the Bafa Lake area is declared a Natural Park, and is taken under state protection. Fishing is still allowed. But it is already strictly forbidden to hunt.
In ancient times, on the bank of the Latmos Gulf of the Aegean Sea, was the city of Heraclea on Latm. Later the gulf became shallow. And after an earthquake, the level of the land rised, and it turned into a lake.
The Сarian Trail runs along on the scattered sections of the ancient road, which have been preserved up to now. It led from the internal regions of Caria, to the seaport of Heraclea.
Near the town of Karpuzla, ruins of the ancient city of Alinda have remained. In the 14th century BC, Hittites lived here. Back then, the city was known under the name Ialanta. Later, already under the name Alinda, it belonged to the famous tsar, Mausolus of Caria.
Near Alinda, there is one more ancient city — Alabanda.
