Travel Japan - Shrine of a 1000 Steps (Kotohira-gu)

Kotohira-gu Shrine, familiarly called Konpira-san, is located in western Kagawa, halfway up Mt. Zozu-san at an altitude of 521 meters. The protector deity for seafarers is enshrined there. Konpira is also said to protect people's health and guard against evil, and it has been a site of worship since olden times. During the Edo Period, in the 18th century, making a pilgrimage to Konpira became quite a fad. Even today, a steady flow of worshipers coming from all over Japan continues.

The approach to the Main Sanctuary halfway up Mt. Zozu-san has some 785 stone steps, and another 1,368 stone steps climb up to the Inner Shrine. When you stand in front of the Main Sanctuary, you receive a bird's eye view of the Sanuki Plain. You can even hire a palanquin bearer to carry you up the steps to the Dai-mon Gate, halfway up the approach way.

In the areas surrounding the approach way, there remain many historic sites, such as the tall lantern that used to be the landmark of Konpira pilgrimages and Saya-hashi Bridge. The town of Kitohira also welcomes a number of visitors to its Konpira-onsen Hot Spring Village.

Kurogi no Ofuji Wisteria, Yame City Fukuoka - 黒木の大藤●福岡県八女市 - Japan As It Truly Is

Everyone raves about the cherry blossoms in Japan - but far fewer know about its close rival - the gorgeous wisteria season as well.

There are not as many large places like Kurogi no Ofuji to see the beautiful wisteria, which normally comes out around the end of April and enjoyed through early May. Two of the most famous are the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi, and the Kawachi Fujien in Kitakyushu - but both are overrun by huge crowds. Kurogi no Ofuji is still a much less known festival or Matsuri, and you don't have to swim through an ocean of people. Like Kawachi Fujien, the wisteria covers about 3000 square meters. The beautiful wisteria makes up part of Susano Shrine.

Kurogi no Ofuji also has a long history, with some trees over 600 years old.

Trip report: Kita Kyushu, Yame, Arita, Takachiho, Miyazaki, Yanagawa

They visited Kita Kyushu and were lucky enough to get the timing exactly right for wisteria blooming at Kawachi Wisteria Garden. It's always hit and miss (who can predict nature?) but as you can see they were bang on time.

You can probably tell from the video that these guys love their food and drink! You can see them doing a sake (Japanese rice wine) tasting which we arranged for them at an historic sake brewery here on Kyushu. They were lucky enough to be escorted on a free of charge private tour. It's a great chance to see how Japanese sake is still produced at a traditional brewery, to do some tasting and then pick up a bottle or two of the one you fancy.

You can see we included (at their request) several places serving the highest quality Wagyu beef from Kyushu. They specifically asked us to include in their itinerary a chance to sample the renowned 'Miyazakigyu' (highest quality beef produced in the Kyushu prefecture of Miyazaki).

They also requested to see some of Kyushu's stunning countryside Up. On the video you can see a couple of photos of the picturesque Takachiho Gorge, the beautiful wide open spaces of Aso, and a wonderful sunset in Obama (that's the town, not the president!).

I told you these guys love their food, right? In addition to all the beef, you can see that they spent time in a teppanyaki restaurant, experienced a traditional Japanese charcoal barbecue and Kyushu's most famous dish - Ramen noodles!

Not only did they get their timing right for wisteria blooming but also for the famous Arita Pottery Fair. It's held for one week in May and despite its popularity we arranged for them to stay in a hotel right in the centre of the action!

At the end of the video you can see they took a romantic ride down the river serenaded by the boatman. Beat that Venice!
