Panjakent-Tajikistan:
Panjakent also or Penjikent, is a city in the Sughd province of Tajikistan on the Zeravshan River, with a population of 33,000 (2000 census). It was once an ancient town in Sogdiana. The ruins of the old town are on the outskirts of the modern city. The Sarazm Important Bird Area lies downstream of the city on the tugay-vegetated floodplain of the river. Ancient Panjekent was a small but flourishing town of the Soghdians in pre-Islamic Central Asia. It was known as Panchekanth. It means five towns (villages) in Sanskrit. The ethnic and territorial name Soghd/Soghdian or Sughd/Sughdian was mentioned in history as early as the Iranian Achaemenid Dynasty (6th century BC). The Achaemenids founded several city-states, as well as cities along the ancient Silk road and in the Zarafshan valley. The name Penjikent is derived from panj (five) and kant (settlements), meaning five settlements. Rudaki, the founder of Persian-Tajik literature called Adam of poets, was born in Panjakent.

Discover Zerafshan (Tourism Promotion Film - 10 min)
The Zerafshan Valley is the cradle of Tajik civilization, home of the first city builders in Central Asia. The Bronze Age site of Sarazm, which translates as the beginning of the land in 2010 became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tajikistan. The region is rich in history with a strong emphasis on learning of Traditions and Culture. It is a place where ancient ceremonies and customs, clothes and embellishments, articles of life, architectural styles, legends and folklore were saved and passed down from father to son. In the remains of the settlement of Ancient Penjikent we see the home of the last Sogdian King, a Zorastrian city, from the centre of the Great Silk Road, where many cultures met, exchanging beliefs, ideas and art. The Zerafshan Valley (also Zarafshan or Zarafshon) is situated in northern Tajikistan with Panjakent as its premier city, embedded between the impressive mountain ranges of the western Pamir-Alai massive.Zerafshan -- which means Gold bearing River in Tajik -- is the main stream which crosses the valley and which is the major source of water in the region. There are also many spectacular lakes in the region situated between the mountains.Due to its rich cultural history, natural beauty and the generous hospitality of its inhabitants the Zerafshan valley of Tajikistan is emerging as a major World Tourist Destination in Central Asia.

Seven Lakes, Tajikistan - At the 7th lake, Hazorchashma
12 August 2016 - Southeast of the city of Panjakent, Tajikistan is the Seven Lakes (Marguzor Lakes, Haft Kul), a string of seven deep blue to aquamarine lakes in the Fan Mountains linked together by a single dirt road. Here, we are at the seventh and highest lake, Hazorchashma, 2450 m above sea level, on the second day of trekking beginning at the first lake. We had camped at the sixth lake the previous night, and I was awestruck at the beautiful colours of the lake and how they would change depending on the time of day, and how much light was reflecting on them.
Tajikistan continues to astound me! All throughout the hike, we would meet shepherds and villagers with their flock of sheep or goats. It was great to see rural life in a secluded region and whenever I look at my photos from these days, I'm so grateful that I was able to be in such an environment! #SummerWithTheStans was always full of beautiful scenery and friendly people!
