A Quick Visit to Cliff Cave Park St. Louis MO USA September 2016
This is a short compilation of photos and video I took during a quick visit I made to Cliff Cave Park in September 2016. Cliff Cave Park is a St. Louis County park in St. Louis Missouri, USA.
This park is very close to our house and one of my favorite parks. This park is a favorite because its so diverse it has a cave, and a spring that comes out of the cave which you will see a little of that in this video.
It has 3 trails and many great views of the Mississippi river. I parked down by the River View Shelter and walked over to the bluff and cave. I went to the beginning of the Spring Valley Trail and the entrance of the cave. You will get to see a little bit of the Spring Valley Trail which is a 3 mile dirt trail with and inner and outer loop which takes you by the cave and above the cave entrance. It has a very hilly and rocky start but once you're on top of the hill its fairly flat and easy to navigate. I have rode these with a mountain bike as well as hiked. Also there are some photos of the Mississippi River Trail is a 5 mile paved flat trail with two loops. I've rode my road bike on this trail many times. I did not get to go on the Bluff trail so that will be in a future video.

St. Louis /seɪnt ˈluːɪs/ (French: Saint-Louis or St-Louis, [sɛ̃ lwi] ( listen)) is an independent city[6] and a major United States port on the eastern border of Missouri. With a population of 318,172 in July 2012,[5] it was the 58th-largest U.S. city at the 2010 U.S. Census. The metropolitan St. Louis area, known as Greater St. Louis, is the 19th-largest metropolitan area in the United States with a population of 2,900,605.
The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named for Louis IX of France, the only canonised King of France. After the Louisiana Purchase, it became a major port on the Mississippi River. Its population expanded after the American Civil War, and it became the fourth-largest city in the United States in the late 19th century. It seceded from St. Louis County in March 1877, allowing it to become an independent city and limiting its political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the 1904 Summer Olympics. The city's population peaked in 1950, then began a long decline that continues in the 21st century.
The economy of St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. The city is home to several corporations including Peabody Energy, Ameren, Ralcorp and Sigma-Aldrich. St. Louis is home to three professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful Major League Baseball clubs; the hockey St. Louis Blues, and the football St. Louis Rams. The city is commonly identified with the Gateway Arch, part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in downtown St. Louis.
The area that would become St. Louis was a center of Native American Mississippian culture, which built numerous temple and residential earthwork mounds in the region, giving the city its early nickname, the Mound City, a name that persisted in the jazz band Mound City Blue Blowers founded in 1923. European exploration of the area began in 1673, when French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette traveled through the Mississippi River valley. Five years later, La Salle claimed the region for France as part of French Louisiana.
The earliest European settlements in the area were built in Illinois Country (also known as Upper Louisiana) during the 1690s and early 1700s at Cahokia, Kaskaskia, and Fort de Chartres. Migrants from the eastern French villages founded Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, across the Mississippi River from Kaskaskia, and in early 1764, Pierre Laclède and his stepson Auguste Chouteau founded the city of St. Louis.[7]
From 1764 to 1803 European control of the area west of the Mississippi to the northernmost part of the Missouri River basin, called Louisiana, was assumed by the Spanish as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1780, St. Louis was attacked by British forces, mostly Native Americans, during the Battle of St. Louis in the American Revolutionary War.[8]
Illinois Adventure #1308 Cahokia Mounds
The remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico are preserved at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Within the 2,200-acre tract, located a few miles west of Collinsville, Illinois, lie the archaeological remnants of the central section of the ancient settlement that is today known as Cahokia. Cahokia Mounds has been recognized as a U. S. National Historic Landmark, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) , in 1982, designated Cahokia Mounds a World Heritage Site for its importance to our understanding of the prehistory of North America. Cahokia Mounds is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
Daguerreotypes of the Destruction of a Native American Mound in St. Louis, Missouri (1850s/1860s)
A collection of daguerreotypes showing the gradual destruction of the burial mound known as Big Mound which was built by Native Americans of the Mississippian Culture between 1000-1450 CE in what is today St. Louis, Missouri. The dirt from the mound was used to build the North Missouri Railroad along the Mississippi River. The photos were taken between 1852-1869 by photographer Thomas Easterly.

Trip To The Top of The Gateway Arch in 1983
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is a beautiful structure and a trip to its top is an exciting adventure as Jame Bond and Mister Richardson found out in the video made by Mister Richardson in 1983. They were on their way to Denver to accept an award for their TV program The American Music Show and had stopped in St. Louis for a visit with their friend Sandy and she took them over for some sightseeing at The Arch.

Cahokia | Ancient America
Cahokia was a city that, at its peak from A.D. 1050-1200, was larger than many European cities, including London. The city was spread out over six square miles (16 square kilometers) and encompassed at least 120 mounds and a population between 10,000 and 20,000 people.
Located across the Mississippi River from modern-day St. Louis, it was the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico. The inhabitants of Cahokia did not use a writing system, and researchers today rely heavily on archaeology to interpret it. The name Cahokia is from an aboriginal people who lived in the area during the 17th century.

Cliff Cave Park Mississippi River Trail Bicycle Ride St Louis Missouri August 27th 2017
Bicycle Ride to Cliff Cave Park Mississippi River Trail from Telegraph Road St. Louis Missouri on August 27th 2017.
Went off the trail a little also got to see some deer. The Greenway extension trail is still under construction. I rode my Trek Mountain Bike.
Per Great Rivers Greenway website:
Cliff Cave Park in the Mississippi Greenway offers stunning views of the Mississippi atop rocky bluffs that tower 170 feet over the river. It lies within one of the most naturally diverse plant and animal communities in the region, offering rocky, droughty hillsides as well as woodlands and wetlands.
This unique park within the greenway gets its name from the cave tucked in the bluffs of south St. Louis County. There is tremendous folklore surrounding the area, including stories from its past as a riverside tavern during the early exploration days of Missouri, a hideout for horse thieves as well a summer camping area for native Americans. It is known for its Karst topography – a region where the bedrock has been dissolved or collapsed, leading to caves or sinkholes.
The park offers hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails as well as picnic areas and shelters. You can enjoy both sun and shade as you explore trails in this section of the greenway. Click here for more information about the River Bluff and Spring Valley trails in Cliff Cave Park.
This area attracts hundreds of migratory birds in the spring and fall. In the summer, you can see Great Blue Herons and Egrets. Some bottomland woodlands and wetlands can be seen from the greenway.
