Fresno is a city in California's San Joaquin Valley. Created in the early 1900s, Forestiere Underground Gardens consists of Roman-catacombs-inspired subterranean passages and courtyards. Fresno Chaffee Zoo has sea lions and a stingray touch pool. Sprawling, trail-lined Woodward Park is home to the Shinzen Japanese Garden. The city is a base for Yosemite National Park, with its waterfalls and giant rock formations.
Neighborhoods of Fresno :
Downtown : Fulton Street in Downtown Fresno was Fresno's main financial and commercial district before being converted into one of the nation's first pedestrian malls in 1964. Renamed the Fulton Mall, the area contains the densest collection of historic buildings in Fresno.
Sunnyside : The neighborhood of Sunnyside is on Fresno's far southeast side, bounded by Chestnut Avenue to the West. Its major thoroughfares are Kings Canyon Avenue and Clovis Avenue. Although parts of Sunnyside are within the City of Fresno, much of the neighborhood is a county island within Fresno County.
Tower District : The popular neighborhood known as the Tower District is centered around the historic Tower Theatre, which is included on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tower District is a hub for community events such as Jamaica My Weekend, Mardi Gras in February, Gay Pride Parade, car shows, A Taste of The Tower, Halloween in the Tower, and the Farmer's Market opened on the North-West Corner of Olive and Van Ness. The area is also known for its early twentieth century homes, many of which have been restored in recent decades. The area includes many California Bungalow and American Craftsman style homes, Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture, Mediterranean Revival Style architecture, Mission Revival Style architecture, and many Storybook houses designed by Fresno architects, Hilliard, Taylor & Wheeler. The residential architecture of the Tower District contrasts with the newer areas of tract homes urban sprawl in north and east areas of Fresno.
Huntington Boulevard : Homes from the early 20th century line this boulevard in the heart of the historic Alta Vista Tract. The section of Huntington Boulevard between First Street on the west to Cedar Avenue on the east is the home to many large, stately homes.
Van Ness Extension : North of Shaw Avenue, Van Ness continues as the Van Ness Extension, between Marks Avenue and West Avenue. Van Ness Extension is considered the most prestigious neighborhood in the city.
West Side : The West Side of Fresno, also often called Southwest Fresno, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood lies southwest of the 99 freeway (which divides it from Downtown Fresno), west of the 41 freeway and south of Nielsen Ave (or the newly constructed 180 Freeway), and extends to the city limits to the west and south. The neighborhood is traditionally considered to be the center of Fresno's African-American community. It is culturally diverse and also includes significant Mexican-American and Asian-American (principally Hmong or Laotian) populations.
Woodward Park : In the north eastern part of Fresno, Woodward Park was founded by the late Ralph Woodward, a long-time Fresno resident.
Sierra Sky Park : Formed in 1946, Sierra Sky Park Airport is a residential airport community born of a unique agreement in transportation law to allow personal aircraft and automobiles to share certain roads.

KFSN ABC-30 -- Arte Américas Dia de los Muertos Segment -- Oct 17, 2012
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Linda Mumma files this report on the 4pm news. From paper mache masks to the skeleton figurines, Fresno is alive with artwork to celebrate the 25th Annual Dia De Los Muertos exhibit and CalaGala Celebration downtown. Elaborate decorated skulls, marigolds and crosses.
Arte America Executive Director Elva Rodriguez told Action News, It's festive. That's why the colors are so important because you're celebrating the dead person. The skeletons are usually dancing, riding bikes.
Images incorporated into the artwork on display at Arte Americas in Fresno -- as part of the Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead exhibit. A Mexican holiday celebrating the lives and families of those who've passed.
The belief is you come into the world and you may have a lot of possessions, but when you go out, you all go out the same, Rodriguez said. You go out with nothing. Come with nothing, you leave with nothing.
This explains why the symbol of the skeleton is so prevalent in each piece. But there's one alter that stands out from the rest, and it's centered around a black and white photo from the 1800's. That family photo, generations later, helps to tell the tale of a Sanger man. Vietnam Vet Roy Gonzalez, who worked at Sequoia National Park for more than two decades, and devoted his entire life to tracing his family history.
Madlyn Esquer said, The piece is titled, one man's search of his heritage with answers found in heaven.
Diana Rodriquez added, So it was decided we'd work with this idea, trying to capture what he must have envisioned as he sat daily after work coming down from Sequoia National Park to sit at a table and laying out his roles of paper and lineage and writing out his notes by hand.
Niece Madlyn and sister Diana, spent three days working on the project. They tell Action News each piece, from the boots below his chair, the scroll sitting on the table, to the photo of each person who has passed, carry's a special meaning. A meaning that takes on a life of its own, as they remember Roy and the other family members who are now gone.
At that time he only searched them out, Diana Rodriquez said. Today we would like to think he is there with them, standing alongside these many people that he was so curious about.

Poverty blossoms in ‘forgotten California’
(19 Oct 2018) California may be famous for its Hollywood star power, wealth and technological innovation, but there is a different part of the state where poverty prevails in little farming towns like Huron, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
According to the U.S. Census bureau, nearly 40 percent of the city's 7,000 residents live below the poverty line, and Spanish is the primary language for nearly all of its residents.
Picking or packing crops pays about $11 to 12.50 an hour, but jobs are seasonal and many go for months without work.
We're in the Appalachians of the West, said Mayor Rey Leon. I don't think enough urgency is being taken to resolve a problem that has existed for way too long.
Huron was founded in 1888 as a water stop for steam trains on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It became a destination for migrant laborers as crops blossomed and is now home to 7,000 people.
The region is unrivaled for farm production, but the rich earth has not given back equally to those who toil out of view of millions of tourists and Californians who pass through the valley each year.
We need something that's going to have permanent employment year-round, Leon. Why can't we pursue an initiative to bring in manufacturing or an assembly center that will employ hundreds of people from these communities?
Congressional hopefuls in the Central Valley have blamed incumbents for doing little to create higher-paying jobs, curb homelessness or solve disparities in health care.
T.J. Cox, a Fresno Democrat, has made limited access to health care and good schools central in his bid to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. David Valadao.
Nearly 40 percent of residents are poor in some towns in Valadao's district. Many can't vote because they're in the country illegally or don't vote because they're more concerned about putting food on the table.

Pride of the Migrant Worker -- An Exhibition by Laura Romero
Statement From Laura Romero:
In honoring my parents, who worked the fields during their young childhood and through their young adult years, I began a series of paintings that represents their hard labor in the fields. The migrant workers are a main source of labor that brings the fruits and vegetables to our dinner tables. “Pride of the Migrant Workers” is a body of work inspired by the hardships, past and present, of Hispanic migrant workers, especially my parents.
Harsh working conditions are portrayed telling of long days laboring through the cold and heat, fighting against both insects and pesticides. My work explores the complex, emotional life of my subjects. Peacefulness, tranquility and humor are all present in the lives of these amazing people.

Santa Clara, California February 2010
The National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) is a performing group of 120 competitively selected high school musicians who assemble biennially to perform at the ASTA National Conference. Students in the eleventh and twelfth grades are eligible for stringed instrument positions. Percussion and wind students are chosen from students in grades 9-12. All string students are required to be members of their school orchestra. Student musicians first submit their application and audition CD of required literature and three minutes of literature of their own choosing to their ASTA state coordinator. Each ASTA state audition committee then selects up to thirty CDs to forward to the national level. Finally, separate national audition committees for strings, winds, and percussion select the 120 students for the orchestra.
Conductor, Raymond Harvey has a noticeable style that has been described as elegant, but suffused with energy and has garnered critical acclaim on symphonic podiums throughout the United States. Now in his eleventh season as Music Director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Harvey was previously Music Director of the Springfield Symphony in Massachusetts and the Fresno Philharmonic in California. He has appeared as guest conductor with many of America's leading orchestras, including those of Philadelphia, Atlanta, St. Louis, Utah, Indianapolis, Rochester, Buffalo, Detroit, Louisville, New Orleans and Minnesota, as well as the New York Philharmonic's Young People's Concerts and the Boston Pops. He has also had engagements with the Maggio Musicale Orchestra of Florence, Italy; the Pusan Symphony of South Korea; and the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica.
Equally at home in the world of opera, Mr. Harvey served for 15 years as Music Director of the El Paso Opera in Texas. Among the many productions he has conducted are Carmen, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Bohème, Turandot, Aïda, La Traviata, The Tales of Hoffmann, The Marriage of Figaro, and Cosí Fan Tutte. He has also appeared with the Houston Grand Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Texas Opera Theater, Opera Idaho, and Indiana University Music Theater.
Recognized as an outstanding pianist, choral conductor and teacher, Raymond Harvey holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music. He has been a frequent guest teacher for the Conductors Institute at Bard College, and for the American Symphony Orchestra League's Conducting Workshops.
