Artist's Drive, Death Valley National Park (2013 [HD])
Amongst the largest national park in the lower 48 states, resides this beautiful 9 mile stretch of road aptly named, Artist's Drive. This one way road snakes and carves through the high desert mountains of Death Valley National Park, near Badwater Basin (lowest elevation in the U.S. at -282 feet). Multiple layers of varying minerals and rock produce a kaleidoscope of colors beckoning you to park your car and explore. Enjoy this relaxing ride at 3.5X speed, and without the extreme desert heat!

Death Valley National Park, California - Artist's Drive (Afternoon Drive) HD (2016)
Artist's Drive rises up to the top of an alluvial fan fed by a deep canyon cut into the Black Mountains. Artist's Palette is an area on the face of the Black Mountains noted for a variety of rock colors. These colors are caused by the oxidation of different metals (iron compounds produce red, pink and yellow, decomposition of tuff-derived mica produces green, and manganese produces purple).
Called the Artist Drive Formation, the rock unit provides evidence for one of the Death Valley area's most violently explosive volcanic periods. The Miocene-aged formation is made up of cemented gravel, playa deposits, and volcanic debris, perhaps 5,000 feet (1500 m) thick. Chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration cause the oxidation and other chemical reactions that produce the variety of colors displayed in the Artist Drive Formation and nearby exposures of the Furnace Creek Formation.
Death Valley - Artists Drive
I shot this with a GoPro Hero2 camera mounted on the driver's side of a 2012 Rubicon. The camera mount is affixed permanently to the forward-most edge of the roof and the GoPro just clips in and out. The GoPro was set to 1080p 30fps wide. Shooting really wide helps to mitigate the effects of rolling shutter. This is a must-do road in Death Valley, best lighting is in the later afternoon. The road is paved in its entirety, is suitable for all vehicles, and requires no special driving skills. You can see my photographs from the trip at

Link to my Death Valley NP video playlist -
In this video, I give you a look at both Twenty Mule Team Canyon and Golden Canyon in Death Valley National Park. Twenty Mule Team is an extensive, colorful badland area and Golden Canyon is a network of tighter slot canyons. Both offer amazing hiking and views of fabulous geological formations.
The video ends with a selection of still images, some showing the closer up views of rocks and plants after heavy rain had flooded the washes. Enjoy!

A drive around the Alabama Hills, Mount Whitney California
Enjoy this drive around the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine, California, on the east side of the Sierra Nevada. This drive begins before dawn (the sunrise was not great), then takes you around Movie Road and up Whitney Portal Road, to the winter turn-around point.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in March, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).
