The Atomium of Brussels (inside)
The Atomium is a building in Brussels originally constructed for Expo 58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak, it stands 102 m (335 ft) tall. Its nine 18 m (59 ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres are connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It is a museum.

The Atomium is an icon of Brussels and Belgium, probably the most unique building we've ever been in! It's also considered one of the top things to do in Brussels and by some as the best attraction in Brussels. After visiting we feel like thats with good reason, the museum elements were interesting and the view was stunning.
The Atomium was constructed for the first post-war universal world exhibition and the spheres represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Here's the Brussels card we used to get the discount at the Atomium and to ride the hop on hop off buses around town:
So is the Atomium the best thing to do in Brussels? That all depends, we had messages from you guys on Instagram claiming it was, but we can't help but feel like the city of Brussels has so much charm, amazing food and laneways to get lost in that the top thing to do really must be just walking and getting lost.

Atomium, Brussels - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
The Atomium is the landmark of Brussels. It was constructed for the EXPO 58 and was originally provided with an aluminum outer skin. In 2004 the outer skin was replaced by high-grade steel. Since then it shines again in new splendor.
The Atomium represents an iron crystal structure of 9 atoms and is symbolic of the peaceful use of the nuclear energy.
Even if the use of the nuclear energy is generally questioned today because of the after-subsequent costs and because of the risk, the Atomium still represents a highly interesting architecture and is beautiful to look at.
An elevator in the inner tube leads to the topmost sphere, from where we can enjoy a magnificent view over Brussels. From here, you have to go back to the ground floor and via escalators and staircases to further spheres. A fascinating light show is partly offered in the escalators just like in a mezzanine floor. It is left to the imagination of the observer whether he imagines himself in a spaceship or whether he is exposed as an electron to the forces of the universe. In a further mezzanine you see a small exhibition with items from the 1958.
In a separate building opposite the entrance is the cashier and a coffee shop.

Inside Atomium in Brussels, Belgium
The Atomium ( /əˈtoʊmiːəm/ ə-TOH-mee-əm) is a landmark building in Brussels, originally constructed for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58). It is located on the Heysel Plateau, where the exhibition took place. It is now a museum.
Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak,[1] it stands 102 m (335 ft) tall. Its nine 18 m (60 ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres are connected, so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Tubes of 3 m (10 ft) diameter connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre. They enclose stairs, escalators and a lift (in the central, vertical tube) to allow access to the five habitable spheres, which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere includes a restaurant which has a panoramic view of Brussels.
In 2013, CNN named it Europe's most bizarre building.

In the 1950s, faith in scientific progress was great, and a structure depicting atoms was chosen to embody this. Though many believe the Atomium depicts an atom, in fact it depicts 9 of them. The Atomium is in the shape of the body-centred cubic unit cell of an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. In layman's terms, the Atomium depicts the precise layout of the iron atoms of an iron crystal.Though the Atomium depicts an iron unit cell, the balls were clad with aluminum instead of iron. Following the 2004-2007 renovations, however, the aluminum was replaced with stainless steel, which is in fact primarily iron. Likewise, while the subject of Atomium was chosen to depict the enthusiasm of the Atomic Age, iron is not and cannot be used as fuel in nuclear reactions.
Renovation of the Atomium began in March 2004; it was closed to the public in October, and remained closed until 18 February 2007. The renovations included replacing the faded aluminium sheets on the spheres with stainless steel. To help pay for renovations, the old aluminium was sold to the public as souvenirs. A triangular piece about 2 metres (7 ft) long sold for €1,000.
Three of the four top spheres lack vertical support and hence are not open to the public for safety reasons, although the sphere at the pinnacle is open to the public. The original design called for no supports; the structure was simply to rest on the spheres. Wind tunnel tests proved that the structure would have toppled in an 80 km/h wind (140 km/h winds have been recorded in Belgium). Support columns were added to achieve enough resistance against overturning.Wikipedia
