FRANCE: LARGEST INTERNATIONAL HOT AIR BALLOON MEETING OPENS
Eng/French/Nat
Hundreds of balloon pilots gathered in north-eastern France for Europe's biggest international hot-air balloon meeting.
Pilots from more than 30 countries are attending this 10 day event which ends this weekend - some coming from as far away as the United States.
Around 1-thousand balloon fanatics have come from all over the world - the United States, Hungary, Great Britain, and even Russia - to fly together in the sky of Eastern France.
The event - Europe's largest hot air balloon meeting - stretches over 10 days.
Around 200 balloons took off this morning from the fields around Chambley-Bussieres, a small town near Metz, for the final day of flying.
The Hoefler family brought their balloon by plane all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico in the United States.
Greg Hoefler, the pilot of the family calls himself a balloon addict.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's difficult with balloons when you go one time, to just go one time. If you go one time you get very addicted, and you've got to continue going.
SUPER CAPTION: Greg Hoefler, US pilot
Greg's passion started when he flew for the first time nine years ago.
Since then he's caught the balloon virus.
He has now been a licensed pilot for the last seven years and is currently teaching his young son, Bryan.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
At first we fill the balloon with cold air, after we fill with cold air, we hit the burners here, puts some heat into it. The more heat we put into it the faster we will rise and the faster we will go.
SUPER CAPTION: Greg Hoefler, US pilot
A routine day begins with a briefing at 6.30 in the morning.
Time for pilots to hear from the flights manager, the latest weather report and, of course, some swap tips.
Then work begins - inflating balloons and getting ready to take off.
Only then can the silent flight start - at sunrise or the sunset as the temperature of the air must be low.
Maurice Otin is a professional fanatic.
He has been a licensed pilot for 14 years.
Otin set up a company called Ciel d'Afrique in Morocco, where he lives, and organises trips for tourists above Marrakech and in the desert.
He came to Chambley-Bussieres for his own pleasure and to share his passion with some of his passengers.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We usually fly in the area of Marrakech, north of the palm grove of Marrakech. We organise trips mixing 4x4 wheels and balloons in desert. They are one week trips. You have open-air sleep and in the morning you fly in the middle of wonderful landscapes.
SUPER CAPTION: Maurice Otin, French professional pilot
The meeting takes place once every other year and is organised by a private group called Pilatre de Rozier, in the memory of Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier.
De Rozier, a native of Eastern France, was the first man to travel in a hot air balloon in 1783.
The event takes place on the Chambley air base, built in 1953 by the NATO American Forces.

UFO mystery as snake-like lights filmed slithering over California desert
Credit: Pen News/Cody Kennedy (
A MYSTERIOUS snake-like UFO glows over the US desert in enigmatic new footage.
Cody Kennedy, 31, was driving with friends in Twentynine Palms, California, when he spotted the mysterious lights.
He had hoped to record some reptilian life for his animal-themed YouTube channel, Crazy Cody's Creatures, but instead found something slithering through the sky.
“Me and a couple of friends were driving around the desert looking for rattlesnakes,” he said.
“In the desert at night, rattlesnakes will come up on to the roads while they are looking for food and mates, and I like to drive around looking for them.
“We were returning back when we saw a bright long bar in the sky that was moving.”
He continued: “We first saw it about a mile away and it looked like someone was shining a light on the bottom of a flag, but it was too high up to have been attached to something on the ground.
“So we drove over to it, got under it and filmed it.”
In his footage, the UFO resembles a worm squirming in the night sky, illuminated in white but with patches of black rippling along its body.
He and his pals watched it for more than 30 minutes before it hurtled to the ground and vanished.
“We saw it come to the ground in the middle of the desert,” said Cody. “We all ran out to it but didn't find anything.”
Cody, from Palm Springs, has had all sorts of suggestions as to what it might have been, but has reservations about all the explanations so far.
“A lot of people have said balloon, but the wind was blowing pretty good and it went against the wind,” he said.
“A drone with an LED light bar behind it was also a good idea but it didn't make any noise and drones are loud.
“I think maybe it was the tail of a kite that has some kind of LEDs but I have looked online for something like it and can't find anything.
“And if it was a kite, where was the person holding it? Also there were powerlines there too, so kite flying at night would be dangerous.”
As for the possibility of something extra-terrestrial, Cody is keeping an open mind.
“I want to believe,” he said. “I just need some evidence now.”

10 Places Planes Can't Fly Over In The US No-Fly Zones
10 Places Planes Can't Fly Over In The United States
==========================================
Summary.
#1. Area 51
Located in the western United States desert is the fabled Area 51. Its precise location is either in Nellis Air Force Range in Nevada or Edwards Air Force Base in California, but airspace above the general area is restricted to all aircraft, military and civilian.
#2. George Washington 's home // Mount Vernon, Virginia
The wooden mansion, built for George Washington between 1758 and 1778, has endured much wear over the years, and in an effort to prevent further damage caused by vibrations from overhead aircraft, a no-fly zone was established around the airspace above the National Historic Landmark.
#3. Walt Disney World // Orlando, Florida and Disneyland // Anaheim, California.
After the September 11 attacks, Disney successfully had a “temporary” no-fly zone restriction slipped into a nearly $400 billion federal spending bill in 2003, which established the restricted airspace over its Anaheim and Orlando theme parks. The restriction remains in place to this day,
#4. Bush Family compound// Kennebunkport, Maine.
The Bush family compound is located on a peninsula known as Walker’s Point in the scenic southern Maine town of Kennebunkport. The home has been in the family for over a century, and is the summer residence of former president George H.W. Bush. Over the years many important people have been through its doors, including Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher, and it has been the scene of numerous Bush family weddings. Given the sensitive nature of the compound, and the frequency with which both former presidents Bush and their families still visit, the airspace above the compound is restricted to aircraft.
#5. Washington, D.C.
After the September 11 attacks, the airspace over our nation’s capital became some of the most highly restricted in the world. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Homeland Security together established concentric no-fly areas around Washington D.C. The outer ring of this boundary, known as the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) requires any aircraft entering the space to identify themselves. Within that zone exists a smaller area of 15 nautical miles around Reagan International Airport called the Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ). They don’t mess around in that FRZ, either. In 2005, the pilot of a Cessna 150 aircraft was just five miles from the White House before it was greeted by the sight of an F-16 fighter jet dropping flares in its field of vision to send a signal it had wandered into unfriendly skies. Oops.
#6. Pantex Nuclear facility // Amarillo, Texas.
The Pantex Plant is a high-security nuclear facility located about 17 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas. Its mission is “to ensure the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear stockpile. The facility dismantles excess nukes, keeps tabs on our existing ones, and maintains cold-war era missiles that are still knocking around after all these years, and therefore there is a ten-mile no-fly zone around it. As you might expect, the site is also closed to the public.
#7. Camp David // Thurmont, Maryland.
The compound has frequently played host to presidents’ families and visiting dignitaries, and numerous high-profile pacts have been struck at the retreat over the years, including the Camp David Accords, a peace deal between Egypt and Israel brokered in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. Due to the high-profile nature of the visitors and activities at Camp David, the airspace above the private compound has a three-mile no-fly zone around it.
#8. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness // Northern Minnesota.
This million-acre expanse of pristine wilderness runs 199 miles along the Canadian border. The area’s nearly 1200 lakes, dramatic views of glacier-carved canyons, and untrammeled natural beauty make it a paradise for outdoor adventurers. President Harry Truman established the no-fly zone over the area back in 1948.
#9. Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay // Georgia.
This base houses the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet’s Trident nuclear-powered submarines, ballistic and guided missile submarines, and the Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic (SWFLANT)—which is essentially a missile factory.
#10. Kennedy Space Center // Merritt Island, Florida.
Florida’s “Space Coast” is a popular spot for space fans to see a rocket launch, but the only view you’re going to get is from the ground. Merritt Island houses NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Due to military and NASA activities on and around the island, airspace around the island is restricted to all civilian and commercial air traffic.
