Bhadra Dam, Bhadravathi
The Lakkavalli dam is located near Lakkavalli village in Tarikere Taluk, Chikmagalur district( in the video it is written as Shimoga district by mistake.)
As a part of Bhadra River Project a tremendous dam built across the River Bhadra. This dam is known as Lakkavalli dam for the reason that this dam is located very near Lakkavalli village. The Lakkavalli dam site is extremely picturesque.
This dam was designed by Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the then chief Engineer of Karnataka state. The height of this dam is 194 ft. This multipurpose dam serving the purpose of irrigation as well as there is also a generating station with two turbines.
The dam is scenic with full of water throughout the year. Like any other Dam site, there are many forested islands with the hill ranges forming wonderful surroundings. There is also Bhadra wildlife Sanctuary at backwaters of this dam. The Bhadra wildlife sanctuary covers a region of 492 Km square. You can notice wild animals like Tiger, Leopard. Herds of Elephants, Spotted Deer. The sanctuary has started a tiger-conservation project called 'Project Tiger' that is an initiative from the Indian Government.

The regular route to cover Bhadra and Agumbe will be:
Bengaluru - Nelamagala - Tumakuru - Gubbi - Arasikere -Tiptur - Tarikere -
Lakkavalli - Bhadra Dam - Tirthahalli - Agumbe - Agumbe Ghat Road
But Instead of this we took a new route this time:
Bengaluru - Magadi - Anchepalya - Yadiyur - Turuvekere - Nonanvinakere

The Ravishing Bhadra River Project, Lakkavalli,
B R Project or Bhadra River Project is multipurpose reservoir built across River Bhadra. Bhadra dam is located in the border of Bhadravathi and Tarikere, in the western part of Karnataka in India that is Bharath.
The Bhadra River rises at Samse in the Western Ghats Aroli hill zone of Kudremukha range, and flows east across the Deccan Plateau. It proceeds through Bhadravathi and joins its sister river Tunga at koodli in Shimoga district. Then the Tungabhadra river continues to flow east and merges with river Krishna at Almpur in Telangana and finally drains in to Bay of Bengal.
The Bhadra dam is a composite earth cum masonry structure of 59.13 metres (194.0 ft) height with length of 1,708 metres (that is 5,604 ft) at the crest level, which submerges a land area of 11,250.88 hectares ( that is 27,801.5 acres). Construction of the dam led to the submergence of 27 villages.
The dam is built on a shattered rock based with a central masonry spillway. It has an earthen embankment on the left side and a rock hillock on the opposite side.
It was designed by Bharata Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya and commissioned in the year 1965. Then the construction cost was 520 crores.
It has a gross storage capacity of 2.025 Cubic Kilometers, live storage of 63.00 Billion Cubic feet at full reservoir level and a dead storage of 8.50 BCF at RL (reservoir level) of 631.54 metres (2,072.0 ft).
The storage created by the reservoir is according to the allocation of 61.70 Billion Cubic Feet of water made under the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal Award.
It is situated at 2km to Lakkavalli in Tarikere taluk as such it is also identified as Lakkavalli dam.
Dams are considered as the temples of resurgent Bharath for its multifaceted roles.
Apart controlling the floods, benefits derived from the Bhadra reservoir storage are:
irrigation
hydro power generation
Drinking water supply,
aquaculture and
Industrial use.
The Bhadra Dam project was mainly the irrigation scheme to be undertaken by the National Water Management Project (NWMP), with the aim of increasing agricultural prosperity, particularly for rice production.
Water from Bhadra dam is used for irrigation with gross irrigation potential of 162,818 hectares (402,330 acres), on the land lying in Chikmagalur, Shimoga and Davanagere districts and helps the farmers to grow kharif and Rabi crops.
It was modernised in 2007 to increase the irrigation potential by revamping of the 428km long main canal and 1435km long distributaries of the project after fully executed.
39.2 MW hydro power generated with the help of three power plants.
Industrial use: A number of industries, urban and rural settlements dependent on assured water supply lie on the banks of the river and in the project command area; Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, the Mysore Paper Mills and Vishweshvarayya Iron and Steel Industries are the major industrial activity noted in the command area of the project.
Bhadra River flows through Bhadra Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary spread over 500 sq.km area of wonderful natural reserve lying between Muthodi and Lakkavalli forest ranges. It houses tigers, leopards, lions, elephants, sloth bears, gaurs, macaques, barking deer, marshy crocodiles and other wildlife and other rare species of avian creatures and reptiles. In 1998 it was declared as Tiger Reserve.
On Tourism front: Sailing, water-cycling, kayaking, water-trampoline and sport fishing are popular water sports activities conducted in this reservoir.
Century old temples of Lakshminarasimha temple in Bhadravathi, Someshwara temple and Amrutheshwara temple near Bhadra dam are popular for historical importance.
How to reach? Bhadra dam is near to Lakkavalli village in Tarikere taluk of Chikmagalur district Dam is distanced at 18km from Bhadravathi, 28km from Shimoga and 76Km from Chikmagalur with well-connected road network. Buses are available from Bhadravathi and Shimoga to Bhadra dam, which are also well-connected by bus and Rail from Bengaluru.
Nearest Airport is Mangalore and nearest Railway Station is Tarikere.
Do visit Bhadra dam during rainy season when river flows full-fledged and dam it is at its full capacity.
