Tour Bus and semi-truck crash in California kills 13 in deadly accident near Palm Springs
PALM SPRINGS, California — At least 13 people have died after a tour bus hit a semi-truck on a thoroughfare in Palm Springs, Sunday morning. Numerous victims were injured following the crash on the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Indian Canyon just after 5 a.m. A maintenance crew had slowed down traffic on Interstate 10 before the vehicles crashed just north of the desert resort town of Palm Springs, CA. Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele said. The work had gone on for hours without problems, he said.
CHP said the bus carrying 44 passengers was going much faster than the truck, though a trauma surgeon said the injuries he saw indicated it was slowing down at the point of impact.
“The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus,” according to CHP. “You can see it was a substantial impact.” It was not known if alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role in the crash about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, but the bus was inspected in April and had no mechanical issues, Abele said. The bus driver was killed, and the truck driver received minor injuries.
The bus was coming from Red Earth Casino in the unincorporated community of Thermal and was about 35 miles into its 135-mile trip back to Los Angeles. CHP officers had been slowing traffic to allow Southern California Edison workers to string wires across the freeway.
Passengers told officials that most people were asleep when the crash occurred at 5:17 a.m. CHP said it appeared the 1996 bus didn’t have seat belts and likely didn’t have a black box that newer vehicles feature. Before April, the bus also was inspected in 2014 and 2015, the CHP said. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show it had no crashes in the two years before Oct. 22 and had a satisfactory safety rating.
The front of the bus crumpled into the semi-truck’s trailer and debris was scattered across the key route through Southern California. Firefighters used ladders to climb into the bus’ windows to remove bodies, and tow trucks lifted the trailer to make it easier to reach the bus, whose front end was demolished.
CHP said that the driver was one of the owners of tour bus company, USA Holiday, based near Los Angeles. The company has one vehicle and one driver, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The company says on social media that it has more than 25 years of experience traveling to casinos in Southern California. It posts about trips leaving the Los Angeles area to casinos in the Southern California desert area and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway - A View From The Top!
Hey guys!
I had the opportunity to work at the BNP Paribas Open in Palm Springs, CA for two weeks in March. On my day off I was able to explore the city a little bit and I went to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway with some friends. I have to say...I wasn't expecting anything TOO exciting but the whole place took my breath away!
First: The Tramcar is the only one in the world that rotates so you can have a 360 degree view of the mountains/city.
Second: The view from the top of Mount San Jacinto is absolutely breathtaking. The mixture of desert, forrest, snow, mountains and clear blue skies is STUNNING!
Third: There are many different trails on top of the mountain. So you can go hiking, explore and see the different view points.
Fourth: I thought it was cheap for everything I got out of it (only 25 dollars). Especially because you can spend all day there- picnic, hike and spend quality time with people you love.
If you are ever in Palm Springs make sure to check out the Aerial Tramway... You are not going to be disappointed!
xoxo

Mix Business with Pleasure in Greater Palm Springs: Group Excursions
1. Hit The Trail
Nothing frees the mind quite like saddling up and shifting into inner cowboy mode. For low-octane adventures, Smoke Tree Stables rounds up city slickers for gentle wrangler-led rides moseying through its ranch’s 400-acre desert spread. Or lasso more room to roam by hitting happy trails that giddy-up into Agua Caliente Indian Canyons, where rustic terrain is dappled with perennially flowing streams and dramatic palm oases. Cowpokes also pair riders with equine for custom outings that weave in a boxed lunch picnic or western cookout. Horsing around can take the fast track since the South Palm Springs ranch fringes town.
2. Go Pedal to the Metal
In a trailblazing concept that leaves comfort zones in the dust, the revved up BMW Performance Driving School West pushes both amateur and professional drivers to their limits. The 32-acre adrenaline-pumping facility steps on the gas with a dedicated 1.4-mile road course, 6.2 acres of paddock, skid pad and 8,500-square-foot performance facility.
3. Hook into Golf Cart Polo
As Greater Palm Springs’ largest special events facility, Empire Polo Club takes it to the turf beyond January through March matches. Home of the mega-watt Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, this massive 200-acre Indio oasis hooks planners with outside-the-box challenges like golf cart polo. Putting the cart before the horse, attendees are outfitted with helmets and mallets to swing away while riding shotgun in golf carts driven by pro polo players.
4. Put your Best Foot Forward
Once defined by its desert courses, Coachella Valley kicks in fresh energy with FootGolf. Spinning tradition with soccer action, this hybrid taps into golf’s basic model by utilizing tee boxes, greens, bunkers, hazards and 18 holes of play. Rather than clubs, feet drive a regulation soccer ball toward 21-inch diameter cups. Format and rules also follow suit, with foursomes driving golf carts and shooting for below-par scores during rounds that average two hours. Play is reserved to The Lights at Indio Golf Course, as well as the AFGL-certified Desert Willow Golf Resort’s 18-hole Mountain View course.
5. Get on a Roll
Wrapped into one million acres of protected land surrounding Greater Palm Springs, Meccacopia Wilderness perfectly mirrors its geologist-relegated moniker as “the most tortured landscape on earth.” Big Wheel Tours leads the way through rocking terrain of these raw badlands while rolling along guided mountain bike excursions. City trappings become an afterthought as riders are immersed within stunning granite rock formations and otherworldly Joshua Trees.
6. Zone in with the Quad Squad
For raw adventure pulling the plug on protocol, ATV Experiences unleashes adrenaline junkies to ride amok on guided ATV tours bumping and grinding through the Mecca Hills and Orocopia Mountains. It’s all about ease with these “gun it and go” quads that rip down desert trails, into box canyons and along rolling hills. For those who prefer to dodge driving responsibilities, new Yamaha Viking UTV six-seaters with off-road suspension take it side by side to such dramatic destinations as Los Arches, Hotel California and Dry Falls.

Palm Springs revamps trailer park with mid-century tiny homes
Built in the 1940s, the Palm Canyon Mobile Club was showing its age when the owners approached realtor Paul Kaplan about helping to sell new homes in the park. Kaplan suggested a fresh start:investing in tiny homes instead of traditional mobile homes.
Rather than partnering with a prefab designer or tiny home architect, they chose to work with a traditional mobile home manufacturer because of the scale of the project (100 homes).
Working with manufactured home builder Silvercrest, they pushed for a modern, Midcentury-inspired design more fitting of Palm Springs and avoiding some of the hallmark details of conventional mobile homes like ceiling moldings and six-panel doors.
There's also a stigma against mobile home parks, explains Kaplan. You know the whole trailer trash kind of thing, and I think people are re-looking at it and seeing it really provides a nice sense of community. The Palm Canyon Mobile Club has a renovated pool and clubhouse with workout room and community kitchen. The houses start at $115,000 for the 600 square foot model, with a $650 monthly rental fee for the site.

How to have an amazing ATV rental experience: Anza-Borrego Desert
Follow our travel blog: ContinentalDrifters.ca
The desert may seem barren, but out among all that sand you can find some pretty fun activities.
Renting a 4-wheel drive is the best way to see the sights here in the Anza-Borrego Desert not far from Palm Springs California. It's California’s largest state park encompassing more than 600,000 acres of badlands, palm oases, slot canyons, and cactus-studded hills. Much of the park is inaccessible to regular vehicles.
It's our first time off roading, and we're setting out slow, to see some of the top sites in the park.
First stop these bubbling mud holes known as the gas domes.
Here, natural gas bubbles from below the earth's surface year round, mixing with groundwater to create a flowing mud hole on the desert floor.
Next up we head west in the park for a place called Shell Reef. It's a bit of a mountain, and we have to park the buggy and climb to the top on foot to see what we came to.
There's a five foot thick layer of fossilized shells up here, and they're everywhere. This layer has resisted erosion thanks to its hardness and durability, so the ridge is preserved as Shell Reef.
We point the buggy north and start looking for - a large formation of circular rocks. The terrain gets very bumpy out here and the makeshift roads harder to follow. But we soon spot our stop.
Helpful signs explain that the 'pumpkins' formed naturally, the result of grains of wet sand naturally cementing themselves to tiny pieces of shell or debris, then growing over time before being buried in sand. Eventually they're revealed by erosion and then they get scoured away slowly by that same process.
The Pumpkin patch is pretty unique, and out here in the middle of actual nowhere, it's a pretty amazing sight. Rather shockingly people have taken the pumpkins over the years, so now the area is fenced off allowing only foot traffic.
There's one last thing we want to see-- the so-called Badlands- a series of deep canyons.
The trails through the Badlands are surprisingly easy to navigate and we get a chance to stop and take some cool photos and videos.
With the clock ticking down on our 4 hour rental, , we speed across the sand towards home base again. We're covered in sand, microdermabraded in places we never expected, and tired - but still high on our desert adventure.
PEE WEE FILMING LOCATIONS CABAZON DINOSAURS
Cabazon Dinosaurs, formerly Claude Bell's Dinosaurs, is a roadside attraction in Cabazon, California, featuring two enormous, steel-and-concrete dinosaurs named Dinny the Dinosaur and Mr. Rex. Located just east of Palm Springs, the 150-foot-long (46 m) Apatosaurus (Dinny) and the 65-foot-tall (20 m) Tyrannosaurus rex (Mr. Rex) are visible from the freeway to travelers passing by on Southern California's Interstate 10.[1] The roadside dinosaurs are best known for their appearance in the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985).[2]
