The Bunkyo Civic Center, and its Sky View Lounge observatory is, as far as we are concerned, the best spot in Tokyo to enjoy Mt Fuji behind Shinjuku’s major skyscrapers. Open year round with free admission since 1994, the Bunkyo Civic Center had a rather rocky start and today’s design is actually very different from the initial one! the original building that was built in 1959 was not deemed to match future safety standards and it was instead decided that it would make more economical sense to come-up with an entire new design.
Opening for the second time in 1994, the Bunkyo Civic Center, the administrative heart of Bunkyo, is a radiant compromise between modern architecture and functionality. If you ever have the chance to visit the Bunkyo Civic Center, we would strongly advise you to do so as early as possible in the morning (9 a.m.) or during sunset.

Le Bunkyo Civic Center, ainsi que son observatoire Sky View Lounge, sont de notre point de vue le meilleur endroit pour contempler le Mont Fuji qui se cache parmis quelques tours de Shinjuku. Ouvert toute l’année et gratuit d’accès depuis 1994, le Bunkyo Civic Center offre un aspect bien différent qu’à ses débuts ! [4K] Japanese hydrangea 文京アジサイ祭り
June and rainy season also means it’s the season for the grey month’s most iconic flower: ajisai, the Japanese hydrangea. To see the blue beauties in bloom right here in Tokyo, head for Hakusan Shrine and its popular Ajisai Matsuri, which features up to 3,000 flowers spread out over an area reaching from the shrine toward nearby Hakusan Park. The shrine itself is known for its power to heal dental ills (!), so you might be able to catch a toothbrush offering or the like during the event period.

Kyoto Festival: Hydrangea Celebration at Fujinomori Shrine (Ajisai Matsuri)
During the peak of the rainy season in June and July the Kyoto Fan team went to Fujinomori Shrine in southern Kyoto to take part in their Hydrangea Festival. Each year the shrine hosts special openings of its two expansive hydrangea gardens for a month's time, with special events such as musical performances, rituals, and martial arts demonstrations offered on certain days. This year the weekend with the most cultural offerings fell on the weekend of the 19th and 20th, with an iaidō sword demonstration, sung poem recitation, epic poetry on the lute, and sumo folk songs on Saturday, and a taiko drum concert, a kemari ball game, and short displays of old court style instrumentals and dance on Sunday. In between the performances offered up to the shrine deities on the prayer hall stage, visitors could enjoy hydrangea themed food and shop at one of the local food or craft stalls set up on the grounds- or of course, wander through the gorgeous hydrangea gardens! Hydrangea festival Japan
Every year in the month of June, the Hydrangea Festival is held in Hakkeijima. During the festival, you can see 20,000 hydrangeas in full bloom on this manmade island, the most you can find anywhere in Kanagawa Prefecture. There are numerous hydrangea-related events, including the Hydrangea Stamp Rally, Hydragea Train, Hydragea waterfall bamboo lantern illlummination, and restaurants offering specialty menus.
The hydrangea garden path stamp rally has been held since the festival started. You can participate in the stamp rally for free on any day during the festival. Participants will get a shopping discount, and the participants who complete the stamp rally will get a discount for the tickets for the Aqua Resorts and the One Day Pass for Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.
There will also be a “Bayside Market ~Ajisai(Hydrangea) Fair~,” with sweets which are associated with hydrangea and special dishes only offered during the festival. After the feast for your eyes, you can have a feast for your stomach!
