KETC | Living St. Louis | Calvary Prairie
From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Jim Kirchherr visits the Calvary Cemetery where some of the most famous St. Louisans are buried. But today, it's not the 150-year-old cemetery that Jim is interested in—it's the undeveloped part of land. This quiet prairie is remnant of the kind that once covered St. Louis.

Controlled burn of prairie in Calvary Cemetery
Erin Shank, an urban wildlife biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, describes the benefits the controlled burn of the prairie at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018. Setting fire to the 24-acre prairie remnant helps native species by promoting the growth of flowering plants that insects and other wildlife in the prairie ecosystem depend on for survival. The fire also kills non-native species of plants that have not evolved to survive being burned. This was the first time the prairie was completely burned by the Missouri Department of Conservation since an intensive restoration effort five years ago. The controlled burn was conducted by DJM Ecological Services in St. Louis by contract with the Missouri Department of Conservation.
