EDWARDIAN PRE-RAPHAELITES
EDWARDIAN PRE-RAPHAELITES
Around the turn of the twentieth century a new trend was clearly evident in British painting. Writing about the work of John and Mary Young Hunter in The Studio in 1903, Alfred Lys Baldry declared that the school to which these young painters belong, and which had attracted a very large number of adherents was that of the new Pre-Raphaelites.
MARY YOUNG HUNTER (NÉE TOWGOOD)
1872 -- 11 April, born Napier, New Zealand
1899 -- Married John Young Hunter at St Barnabas' Church, Kesington
1905 -- 4 May, Birth of Gabrielle, at Gifford's Hall
1947 -- 8 September, died Carmel, California
Mary was born in Napier, New Zealand, the daughter and second child of Edward (born in Wales, died in NZ 1882) and Edith Towgood. Her widowed mother brought Mary and her three sisters to live in England, where Mary later attended the RA Schools, and studied in Newlyn (C Wood), possibly with GARSTIN, before her marriage.
In 1899 she married the genre and portrait painter John Young-Hunter, and with him had one daughter, Gabrielle (b1905). She exhibited at the RA and worked as a portraitist in Scotland and England until 1915, when the family went to the United States, living first in New York City and subsequently in Taos, New Mexico.
1921 - Divorced from John Young Hunter . Went to stay with friends in Los Angeles.
In 1922 moved to Berkeley, California, then one of the arts and crafts movement centres in the United States.
Was joined by her daughter Gabrielle. Gave up oil painting. Developed her gesso technique for portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. Taught around this time at San Francisco Art Institute.
In 1925 moved to Carmel-by- the-Sea, then an art colony deeply influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Built a studio/cottage. Joined Carmel Art Association.
In 1945 built a studio in Carmel Valley. After nearly twenty years resumed oil painting to execute a portrait of her granddaughter, Marcia.
Continued to work despite failing health. 8 September 1947, died in Carmel.
JOHN YOUNG HUNTER
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, John Young-Hunter was a portrait, figure, and landscape painter with a highly aristocratic upbringing in England and a career that reached to the American East and Southwest.
He was raised with privilege and extravagance among the cultural elite of London, and close family friends included John Singer-Sargent and Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
John received much recognition for his portrait painting in England, and his paintings were exhibited in the National Tate Gallery in London and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. From 1900 to 1913, he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
In 1899 he married the paintress from Neo Zealand Mary Towgood
In 1913, he traveled to the United States, pursuing his fascination with American Indians whom he had seen in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show performances in London.
In 1917, he first visited Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Cutting his connections to the European art world, he settled in Taos in 1942 and became a part of the colony of artists around Mabel Dodge Luhan.
He had a home and studio on the eastern edge of town and replaced his painting of society portraits with Indian subjects, landscape, and still life.
After divorcing Mary in 1921, he married, still in the 1920s Eve Hathfield, in Taos, where they lived up to their death. John Young Hunter died in 1955 and is buried in
Taos.

Will you keep your teeth all your life? Our commitment is to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for life. At the Napa Valley Studio of Aesthetic Dentistry, located just a short distance away in St Helena, CA., we provide quality dentistry in a beautiful, safe and supportive environment. With over 25 years in practice, Dr. Demetrakopulos, will take the time to listen to your concerns and ensure that your visit is a comfortable one. We understand our patients concerns and take the extra time to help our patients feel relaxed and calm during their visits. By taking the time to listen to concerns, as well as offering oral sedation and Nitrous Oxide, we are able to relieve anxiety, and help our patients relax in a state-of-the-art, comfortable, safe and supportive environment.
Dr. Demetrakopulos (born in Northern California and raised throughout the United States and Europe) became interested in dentistry at the age of 15 while she was having orthodontic treatment in Germany. Soon after she began working as a dental assistant for a well known restorative dentist in Nurnberg, Germany.
This sparked her enthusiasm for dentistry, and upon returning to the U.S., she enrolled at San Francisco State University and graduated with a BS in Cellular Biology. She went on to attend the University of the Pacific Dental School where she graduated in 1984. Upon graduation from UOP, she completed a residency with Branemark Implant System. This is when she decided that she would focus on Implant and Restorative dentistry, as well as Cosmetic Dentistry.
Dr. Demetrakopulos opened her practice in downtown San Francisco where she created some of the Bay Area's most beautiful smiles. In 2004, she decided to move out of the big city, and start a practice in the heart of the Napa Valley Wine Country. She was now able to combine her love of dentistry along with her passion for food and wine. Her state of the art practice in St. Helena is located in the restored depot building. Vineyard views and rolling hills are enjoyed outside the windows, and everyday, the Napa Valley Wine Train stops outside the door.
Working in partnership with her Artistic and Laboratory director, Mr. Jerry Parks, who is one of the best laboratory masters of porcelain fabrication in California, Dr. D and Mr. Parks custom make smiles, choosing the perfect shape and the shade to give patients the smile they have always dreamed of.
Dr. Demetrakopulos prides herself on her passion for dentistry, food, wine and especially people. She is creating beautiful smiles in the Napa Valley, and would love the opportunity to meet you.

George Sterling - Henri
George Sterling (December 1, 1869 – November 17, 1926) was an American poet based in California who, during his time, was celebrated in Northern California as one of the greatest American poets, although he never gained much fame in the rest of the United States. Sterling was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, the eldest of nine children. His father was Dr. George A. Sterling, a physician who determined to make a priest of one of his sons, and George was selected to attend, for three years, St. Charles College in Maryland. He was instructed in English by poet John B. Tabb. His mother Mary was a member of the Havens family, prominent in Sag Harbor and the Shelter Island area. Her brother, Frank C. Havens, Sterling's uncle, went to San Francisco in the late 19th century and established himself as a prominent lawyer and real estate developer. Sterling eventually followed him to the Bay Area in 1890 and worked for eighteen years as a real estate broker.
Sterling became a significant figure in Bohemian literary circles in northern California in the first quarter of the 20th century, and in the development of the artists' colony in Carmel. He was mentored by a much older Ambrose Bierce, and became close friends with Jack London, and Clark Ashton Smith, and later mentor to Robinson Jeffers. His association with Charles Rollo Peters may have led to his move to Carmel. The hamlet had been discovered by Charles Warren Stoddard and others, but Sterling made it world famous. His aunt Missus Havens purchased a home for him in Carmel Pines where he lived for six years. Sterling's most famous line was delivered to the city of San Francisco, the cool, grey city of love!.
