2012 Estate Pinot Noir - DeLoach Vineyards
2012 Estate Pinot Noir
In the Vineyard
On February 3, 2010, Demeter USA, the only certification agent for Biodynamic® farms in the United States, certified the 17-acre estate vineyard and garden at DeLoach Vineyards, fully compliant with their standards for Demeter Biodynamic status. As one of only sixty-four wineries or vineyards in the U.S. with Demeter certified Biodynamic estates vineyards, DeLoach is among an elite group of sustainable wine grape growers committed to farming in parallel with the Earth’s natural cycles.
The 2012 vintage is being described as excellent, outstanding and ideal” by many, as the wine grape harvest across California yielded generous amounts of high quality fruit. In our vineyards, textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until our treasured wine grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into the cellar.
Conversations with the Winemaker
The 2012 Estate Pinot Noir is made using six of our eight estate clones – 115, 777, Swan, La Tache, Calera and 828. Calera and 828 are fermented separately, forming the base of this vintage. Calera contributes spice and red berry characteristics. Clone 828 was the last to be picked. With its ripe stems, we were able to ferment 100% whole cluster. This allowed the darker colors and the deeper flavors of plum and blackberry to develop. The 115 and Swan were co-fermented as were the 777 and LT contributing minerality, spice and depth of character. All were fermented using their native yeasts.
Tasting Notes
Our 2012 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir aromatically opens with subtle fresh fruit aromas of strawberry and blueberry heightened with hints of anise. The deep aromas lead to enticing flavors of Santa Rosa Plum and just a touch of white pepper. Its medium body and beautiful tannins make it the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of foods.

Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa
Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa is one of my favorite places to explore in the entire area. This winery is located on the top of a hill and has a fantastic view from the tasting room. It also is the home to more than two dozen massive sculptures, some of which were from Burning Man. You are free to walk through the sculpture gardens and even the small trail through the vineyard itself. Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa is a must visit and is one of the most fun wineries in California.

Our Old Wente Clone and Clone 809 vineyard blocks provided the fruit for this wine. After whole cluster pressing, the juice underwent native yeast fermentation and lees stirring. Extending the barrel aging time in French oak to 14 months increased the complexity and rich depth while still retaining the delicate fruit components of this elegant Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Our 2012 Russian River Valley Estate Vineyard Chardonnay glows a brilliant golden-yellow in the glass before opening with aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, fuji apples and pear. It is light, but weighty, with a full mouthfeel that coats the palate and a balanced texture that is complemented by bright acidity. This is a complex Chardonnay that will age extremely well.
Venge Vineyards - Calistoga, California
The Venge (ven-ghee) family has farmed vitis viniferra varieties in Napa Valley for nearly a half-century. The family's viticultural roots flourished in 1976 with the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the Oakville District that was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Nils' son, Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build his own legacy in the valley. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards from his family. Today, Kirk continues the Napa Valley heritage, focusing on select vineyard sites that produce fruit worthy of bearing the Venge family name.

What I Drank Yesterday Peay Winery from the Extreme Sonoma Coast
I remember the first time that I tasted the wines of Peay winery. When Andy Peay came by the store and tasted me on the first release of the wines. They were outstanding and it was clear to me that this would soon be one of the great small boutique Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah producers of California.
