Across the Utah Desert
The Book Cliffs rise above the desert floor of eastern Utah stretching 200 miles between the Wasatch Mountains and Colorado's De Beque Canyon. The towering rock faces set the backdrop for the former Denver and Rio Grande Western's Desert Mainline known today as Union Pacific's Green River Sub.
Running between Grand Junction, Colorado and Helper, Utah, this lesser known route is often overlooked by railfans yet it offers great railroading action through some of the most incredible scenery you'll find anywhere!
Join 7idea Productions as we take you on an amazing journey through a land few get to see. Hike into Ruby Canyon and catch Amtrak's California Zephyr rolling beneath giant sandstone cliffs. Watch heavy coal trains climbing the grade at Thompson Cut. The scenic highlight of the trip is our tour of the thirty-seven mile Cane Creek Branch near Moab, Utah between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. The ageless setting of the American West overshadows any train that runs through here.
Union Pacific, BNSF, Amtrak, and even the Utah Railway make an appearance as we uncover one of the best kept secret railfan locations in the west! Join us as we travel Across the Utah Desert on Union Pacific's Green River Sub.

Utah 2012 Highlights
I was fortunate enough to take a short excursion to southeastern Utah, while on a business trip to Colorado Springs. I had about 3 days of shooting, give or take, between Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and the surrounding area of Moab, Utah. Here is a slideshow of the highlights of my travels. I got somewhere between 10 and 20 of my best shots that I have taken to date and the majority of the 70 photos in this slideshow would easily make my top 100. My photos, accounts, or any one else's for that matter, would not be able to describe the beauty held within this area. I was also fortunate enough to acquire licensing for a couple songs by R. Carlos Nakai to add the perfect ambiance to these photos.
You can view all of these photos and more on my website and Facebook page:

Moab Rim Trail Review and Guide in Moab Utah 4K UHD
For the full off-road trail guide please visit:
One of the closest 4wd trails to the town of Moab, Moab Rim is a difficult and dangerous trail that requires your undivided attention, but rewards you with awe-inspiring views of the Colorado River and the town of Moab. Climbing 950 vertical feet from the base of the canyon next to the river, you will encounter many rock ledges and tight turns, all of which you must traverse while leaning off-camber towards the cliff edge. Two named obstacles along the edge include the Devil's Crack and Z-Turn. The higher you climb, the better the views. Once the trail has reached the plateau, the scenery changes to more of a desert scene closely resembling that of Hells Revenge. With several more optional obstacles such as the sand hill and an extremely steep slickrock dome with an 85% grade, this trail is sure to entertain even the most hardcore wheeler. This off-road trail is also a great trail if you are short on time or just want to hit one quick trail while passing through town.

The Essence of the Southwest United States
A documentary encompassing my senior summer trip out west. We drove from Lexington, KY to Lake Powell and back. Visiting Keystone resort, Canyonlands and Arches nation parks in Moab, Utah, Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell, we have captured the essence of the western United States in this documentary.
Long Canyon - Moab, Utah
Moab, Utah is one of the premier off-road and four-wheel drive destinations. Comprised of some of the most well-known trails in all of the United States it has trail types that suit all driver's wheeling desires. Some would call it an off-roader's paradise. Long Canyon is not a trail in a jeeper's sense but just a dirt road that connects you back into Moab if you are out playing in the Gemini Bridges area. The reward is some of the most breath-taking views that the Moab area has to offer. This trail is best done on a clear day about an hour before sunset to really highlight the scenery. There is a look-out point about half way with about an 800-foot vertical drop into the canyon below. Feel free to explore this area in your vehicles and gain some killer photography, but beware this area is very dangerous and there are no second chances. Small children should be kept close, there are some verticle cracks that small children will undoubtedly find if left by themselves.
A Day at the Canyons
Yesterday I drove 4 1/2 hours southish from Salt Lake City to Canyonlands National Park & Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. I wish I had a little more time as I wanted to visit Arches National Park as well. Either way though I saw a lot of great sites. I tried to take some pictures which you see in this video but really I don't think any images or video can really do this place justice. It was larger then life amazing.
Here's a little history thanks to wikipedia:
Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab and preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character. Two large river canyons are carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River and Green River. Author Edward Abbey, a frequent visitor, described the Canyonlands as the most weird, wonderful, magical place on earth—there is nothing else like it anywhere.
The Colorado River and Green River combine within the park, dividing it into three distinct districts. Below the confluence, the Colorado River flows through Cataract Canyon.
False Kiva stone circle
The Island in the Sky district is a broad and level mesa to the north of the park between Colorado and Green river with many overlooks from the White Rim, a sandstone bench 1,200 feet (366 m) below the Island, and the rivers, which are another 1,000 feet (305 m) below the White Rim.
The Needles district is located east of the Colorado River and is named after the red and white banded rock pinnacles which dominate it, but various other forms of naturally sculptured rock such as canyons, grabens, potholes, and a number of arches similar to the ones of the nearby Arches National Park can be found as well. Unlike Arches National Park, where many arches are accessible by short to moderate hikes or even by car, most of the arches in the Needles district lie in back country canyons and require long hikes or four-wheel-drive trips to reach them.
The area was once home of the Ancestral Puebloans, of which many traces can be found. Although the items and tools they used have been largely taken away by looters, some of their stone and mud dwellings are well-preserved. The Ancestral Puebloans also left traces in the form of petroglyphs, most notably on the so-called Newspaper Rock near the Visitor Center at the entrance of this district.
The White Rim Sandstone
The Maze district is located west of the Colorado and Green rivers is the least accessible section of the park, and one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of the United States.
A geographically detached section of the park located west-northwest of the main unit, Horseshoe Canyon Unit, contains panels of rock art made by hunter-gatherers from the Late Archaic Period (2000-1000 BC) pre-dating the Ancestral Puebloans. Originally called Barrier Canyon, Horseshoe's artifacts, dwellings, pictographs, and murals are some of the oldest in America. It is believed that the images depicting horses date from after 1540 AD, after the Spanish re-introduced horses to America.
A subsiding basin and nearby uplifting mountain range (the Uncompahgre) existed in the area in Pennsylvanian time. Seawater trapped in the subsiding basin created thick evaporite deposits by Mid Pennsylvanian. This, along with eroded material from the nearby mountain range, become the Paradox Formation, itself a part of the Hermosa Group. Paradox salt beds started to flow later in the Pennsylvanian and probably continued to move until the end of the Jurassic.[15] Some scientists believe Upheaval Dome was created from Paradox salt bed movement, creating a salt dome, but more modern studies show that the meteorite theory is more likely to be correct.
