Flying Dog Brewery Part of Micro Beer Spurt in US
It's been around a long time. One of the world's oldest, written recipes explains how to make it. And the recipe itself was sometimes said to be a gift from the gods. But beer has come a long way. And in the United States, where just a short while ago, overall beer sales were down one percent, micro, or, craft breweries have enjoyed a 12 percent growth over the same period. VOA's Arash Arabasadi toured a modern brew house to see the latest take on an age-old process. Bottoms up!
Cooperstown Distillery
Longtime restaurateur Eugene Marra focused on food, wine and spirits as part of his profession, a career that’s lasted more than 45 years. A student of his winemaking grandfather, he took his appreciation beyond the glass when he started a vineyard in northern Georgia around 1991.
Eugene’s passion for fine spirits fueled his interest in becoming a distiller in the late 2000s, just as New York state was increasing its support of small-batch producers. Today the New York City native takes pride in the all-New York state ingredients that make up his whiskey, bourbon, gin and vodka.
The names reference Cooperstown’s baseball roots and other historic assets, but Eugene is always looking forward. The former chef continues to craft new recipes that contribute to New York’s growing reputation for high-quality distilleries.
Whether tipping a farm-to-glass beer at a brewpub, sampling some moonshine or enjoying a sip of hard cider or wine, you’ll be a part of something special in Brew Central. Central New York brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners offer the state’s best craft beverages on par with any of the United States’ finest pints. CEOs, Craft Brewers Argue Costs of Beer Merger
(8 Dec 2015) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus043794
CEOs and members of the craft brewing industry are making their case in Washington about the potential Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller merger.
Officials from major brewing companies including Anheuser-Busch say the merger will not impact the current competition climate for major brewers and smaller, craft breweries across the country.
CEO for AB-InBev Carlos Brito says that the proposed merger is about bringing more choices to more consumers around the world, adding that the competitive landscape of the U.S. beer market will not change as a result.
Conversely, J. Wilson, Minister of Iowa Beer from the Iowa Brewers Guild argues that if the merger follows through, the craft brewing industry will suffer a major blow to raw material access and be forced out of the competition.
Wilson added that should there be a hop shortage, the price per pint of beer would undoubtedly rise for consumers.
