In this episode, we travel to Bend, Oregon to visit Deschutes Brewery, the nations seventh largest craft brewery, celebrating their 27th anniversary. We'll visit 'Brew 1' where it all started as a pub, visit the farm that helps complete the cycle of beer and burgers and of course we'll hit the kitchen where Chef Jeff will create some amazing dishes prepared and paired with delicious beers. We'll also take a tour of Bend and all of the awesome things that people do there like snowboarding and mountain biking and we'll meet all the awesome people that make Bend the great destination it is. Central Oregon rivals San Diego as one of the most important craft beer centers of the United States. Deshutes brewery is the seventh largest craft brewery in the United States. I returned from my visit to Bend Oregon with a gallon beer and cider and I can't wait to share. Charger, Deschutes Brewery, Bend OR Level 2
A tip to the chargers at Deschutes breweries facility in Bend, Oregon. It was great to have chargers there if you are visiting from out of town. Sadly there was no food at the brewery tasting room. You could, however, do a tour of the brewery and stay and taste the goodness of Central Oregon brewing. We sure do love our craft beer here.

012 Cross Crusade Deschutes Brewery Bend: Chapter 1

Halloween weekend is something of a cyclocross festival in Oregon and Cross Crusade ( is something of an epicenter of the madness. Hosted at the Deschutes Brewery ( it is amazing. The party on Saturday night is not to be believed. If you've never experienced the madness of Crusade Halloween weekend, I suggest you put it on your bucket list.
This video is the first of a double feature! The Saturday race is a straight up race and this year's course threw in some new wrinkles. It is not a difficult layout, but it was very dry and loose all weekend. A long sand run was added to a super technical descent and the dreaded run-up. Heckle Hill was also a fun spot and was staked out by the Space Cadets from Seattle.
The Sunday race is, well, bananas. Serious costumes, but also some very serious racing. Stay tuned for that video.

Deschutes Brewery Only Slightly Exaggerated IPA
It isn’t often that I have the opportunity to write these posts while traveling, but as I begin to let the words flow that will ultimately create this particular post, I realize that this is now the second entry created outside of my home state. The last one (for Gentle Reminder IPA) was written while on vacation in Playa del Carmen. This one is being crafted as I wait for my flight in the Burbank Airport. This trip was a quick one, and on the surface, it was a business trip for Trader Joe’s. If you dig a little deeper, which we at About Beverages usually do, you would realize that there was also fun involved as well. New people to meet, new beverages to be tried, and new experiences to learn from. Speaking of Trader Joe’s, this episode’s featured beverage was purchased there. Although it is not exclusively available there, as happens frequently, it was one of the new items available when I arrived for work last week. The beverage we will be trying this week is a new seasonal offering from Deschutes Brewery, the Only Slightly Exaggerated IPA. This beer was brewed in conjunction with Travel Oregon’s “Only Slightly Exaggerated” tourism advertising campaign using the Sabro hop, which is grown in the Northwest. FYI, when we recorded our podcast, we didn’t notice the word “only” in the title. What did we think? What do you think? Deschutes Brewery, making beer smarter
Deschutes Brewery, the seventh-largest craft brewery in the United States, is transforming beer making with data science. To increase production capacity with existing equipment, the brewery integrated the on-site OSIsoft PI System used to collect and manage production data with Microsoft Cortana Intelligence Suite. By using predictive analytics to increase fermentation capacity, Deschutes Brewery anticipates that it can save an average of 48 hours for every batch of beer across 8-10 brands year round. The result is more great beer without significant capital investment.
