Watermaster: the History of Water in the Deschutes Basin
A short documentary on the history of irrigation in the Deschutes Basin and the legacy of former Deschutes Basin Watermaster, Bob Main.
Watermaster is a partnership project by the Deschutes County Historical Society, the Main family, and producer Kevin Raichl of Visual Thinking.
Using interviews and historic footage, the piece covers the historical uses of the Deschutes River for irrigation and the challenges water managers face managing the river over 100 years later in the face of increased recreation and additional demands on the river. Bob Main spent over thirty years in water resource management; he passed away in 2013.

Tour in Sisters and Bend, Oregon, USA
from Wikipedia: Towering forests of Ponderosa pines, snowy Cascade Mountains, pristine rivers, lakes and streams, sun drenched days and star-filled western nights - this is the special beauty of SISTERS, Oregon. Sisters, elevation 3,100 feet, is located in western Deschutes County, just east of the Cascade Mountains in central Oregon. Once a lumber producing town, Sisters is now known as the Gateway to the Cascades. The downtown area has been transformed, and today Sisters is recognized as a unique place to shop with its many specialty stores and galleries.
BEND is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range along the Deschutes River. Here the Ponderosa Pine forest transitions into the Great Basin high desert plateau, characterized by arid land, junipers, sagebrush, and bitter-brush. Originally a crossing point on the river, settlement began in the early 1900s. Bend was incorporated as a city in 1905. Economically, it started as a logging town but is now identified as a gateway for many outdoor sports, including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting, skiing, and golf.

Comrade Johns
Frank T. Johns, carpenter and Portland native, ran twice for president with the Socialist Labor Party in 1924 and 1928. This lecture will set Johns’s personal biography against the wider drama of the Socialist movement in the 1920s, when Socialism was a viable political philosophy in the United States. He died in Bend, Oregon, during an attempt to save a boy drowning in the Deschutes River.
This talk was presented at the Downtown Bend Library on July 7, 2015, by Deschutes Public Library community librarian Nate Pedersen, who is also the board president at the Des Chutes Historical Museum.
[Wikipedia] Petersen Rock Garden
Petersen Rock Garden, formerly Petersen's Rock Garden and also known as the Petersen Rock Gardens, is a rock garden and museum on 4 acres (1.6 ha), located between the cities of Bend and Redmond in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. Rasmus Petersen, a Danish immigrant who settled in Central Oregon in the early 1900s, began constructing the garden in 1935 using rocks he found within an 85-mile (137 km) radius of his family home. Petersen constructed detailed miniature castles, churches and other small buildings and monuments from a variety of rock types. He incorporated other design elements such as bridges, water features and natural landscaping. Petersen worked on the garden until his death in 1952; the garden has remained in his family's care since then. The garden, considered a roadside attraction with novelty architecture, includes roaming peafowl and a museum with a gift shop that sells rocks.
In 2011, Petersen Rock Garden was named one of Oregon's Most Endangered Places by the Historic Preservation League of Oregon (now known as Restore Oregon). In 2012, accidental damage to one of the stone bridges by a contractor catalyzed an effort to document the garden using laser scanning and other technologies. The garden was closed temporarily in 2013 to undergo repair and review for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Petersen has been praised for his creative work, and the garden has received a positive reception for its uniqueness and local significance. Listing on the National Register was achieved on October 30, 2013.

C-SPAN Cities Tour - Bend: Deschutes Railroad War
Hear about the Deschutes railroad war. Railroad historian and attorney Martin Hansen talks about the race between two railroad barons to build a railroad line through central Oregon. James Hill and Edward Herriman began building competing lines along the Deschutes River in 1909. James Hill arrived victorious and nailed the golden spike at the Train Depot in Bend. The Hill line opened Bend for the lumber industry and made it possible to transport thousands of pounds of lumber from that part of the state.
