About 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) south of Dunhuang city, and surrounded by the Echoing-Sand Mountain, Crescent Spring can be called a natural wonder in the Gobi Desert. Some say it reminds them of the eye of a beautiful woman, lucid, beautiful and amorous. Some say it looks like the mysterious, gentle and seductive lips of a pretty woman, or a slice of lush, sweet and crystal cantaloupe. Actually, it resembles a crescent fallen down into this desert.

Dunhuang was of great importance as a defensive and cultural center on the western borders of the Chinese empire at various points in its history. The routes west going north and south of the Taklamakan Desert split near Dunhuang. The route to the south and southwest was guarded by the so-called Jade Gate (Yü Guan) and Southern Gate (Yang Guan) which were garrisoned and supplied from Dunhuang. The Dunhuang region was the site of very important Buddhist monastic complexes, the most famous of which was at the Mogao Grottoes, where today one can see a treasure trove of Buddhist art covering a span of more than a millenium.

I took a road trip to the northwest part of China in Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang province. Along the trip, we saw canyons, mountains, desert, salt lake, and lakes. We also went to the starting point of the Great Wall, the Mogao Cave, and experienced the Islamic culture in the Xinjiang Province.

Part 1 not just the usual on meditation, this time through the two Grottoes in Dunhuang, the famous Mogao Grottoes and Yulin Grottoes (Shout out to Dunhuang Academy!) into the world of Buddhism Arts, meditation and celebration of diversity of cultures, witness a true Oneness back in time.
Dunhuang is the oasis on the north side Tibetan Plateau and south side Gobi Desert. It is a historical gateway city to and from Asia, a melting pot of cultures across Eurasia, with trades of precious jewels, gold, herb, exchanging ideas, arts, music, embracing spirituality. Monks and merchants across from Persia, India, Pakistan...Iran all across to and from China, an important route in the ancient times 1752 years ago...
Grateful for my parents in letting me witness their participation in conservation and raising funds with global efforts, planting the tree belt for protection from sand erosion. Amazing to see all the green growth nurturing Mogao and my heart!
