The Dunhuang Grand Theatre has created pattern of the urban space that is similar to those in Han Dynasty. The spatial form is also adapted to the local client - sand storms. The architectural style draws from ancient modeling style of buildings in Han Dynasty. And it adopts many architectural features with the essence of Chinese characteristics such as macro-slope roofs, high towers, high-station bases, pillars and beams, bucket arches.

사막의 푸른 보석, 월아천. 사막 한가운데, 파란 물을 담은 호수 하나가 그림처럼 떠 있고, 빼어난 정자가 서 있다. 작은 호수가 초생달 모양을 하고 있어 월아천이라고 한다. 천년동안 마른 적이 없다는 월아천은 서역을 오가던 상인들에게 오아시스였다. 월아천의 중심건물인 월천각. 중국 도교의 성지였던 월천각의 내부에는 벽화와 금불상이 보존되어있다. 근처 막고굴 53번 석굴에서 출토된 벽화를 이곳으로 옮겨 전시하고 있다. 오후가 되자 월아천은 더 많은 사람들로 붐빈다. 파란호수와 사막은 사진 찍기에 딱 좋다. 물과 모래가 있는 월아천은 아이들에겐 최고의 놀이터다. 모래성을 쌓고 또 다른 월아천을 만든다. 모래로 만든 명사산과 월아천. 늦은 오후가 되면 고요하다. 시간에 따라 시시각각 모래색이 바뀌고 날카롭고 부드러운 모래 능선은 환상적인 풍경을 자아낸다.

THE LEGEND OF DUNHUANG
China’s highly-acclaimed dance spectacular makes its Australian debut
Gansu Dance Drama & Opera Ensemble’s The Legend of Dunhuang is a colourful, vibrant depiction of an ancient Chinese tale, taken from the famed Dunhuang Frescoes of the Gansu province of China. This production was originally created in 1979 by the then Gansu Opera and Dance Troupe as Tales of the Silk Road, and was adapted for film and toured around Europe and Asia in 1982. Silk Road was preconceived in 2008 in celebration of the Beijing Olympics, where it was performed in its current form by the Gansu Ensemble. The piece has been performed in 400 cities worldwide in the 34 years since its creation, this is its Australian debut.
The 47-strong Gansu Ensemble present an engaging production, which blends Chinese classical dance with other modern dance forms. The piece is peppered with buddhist imagery, balletic elements and visible influences from Thai and Indian dance forms. The Legend of Dunhuang is a marvellous display, with stunning, vibrant costumes and complex scenery creating a fantastic arena for the dance itself. Each of six short acts had a different backdrop and set of costumes, representing the various times and places central to the story.

Theater and opera director Peter Sellars joined Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman for a conversation about Dunhuang and the Vimalakirti Sutra as sources of inspiration for artists and for Sellars' ambitious, forthcoming production.
This lecture was presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Cave Temples of Dunhuang, Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road.
