Swiss Rack & Pinions: Furka Summit Line - NEW edited version.
New, edited and augmented version. Now includes shots from a drone and more.
Certainly one of the nicest tourist railways in Europe, it connects Realp (Uri canton) to Oberwald (Wallis canton) over the Furka Pass. 4 different steam locomotives are shown. 3 of them are original from the line, one comes from the Viege-Zermatt railway: a very interesting locomotive. All are over 100 years old, even though they just look brand new.
Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke - Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway -
Infos:

The Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway has been described as one of the most beautiful Swiss train routes. The Furka mountain route, which was built in 1925, leads past the impressive Rhone Glacier. Nostalgic steam locomotives and original carriages travel from June to October across cograil sections from Realp up to Canton Uri, through long tunnels and over folding bridges to the railway station of Furka, which lies at an elevation of 2,160 meters, and subsequently ride down on the Valaisian side. The steam train runs past the Rhone Glacier, which gave the original railway route the name Glacier Express. Details:

Furka Bergstrecke 1.AVI
The Steam Railway Experience at the Rhone Glacier
Marvel at our forefathers' pioneering achievements in railway technology surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery. Start with us from Realp station in the Canton of Uri (1420 m above sea level) on an unforgettable, thrilling trip which takes us in some two hours in carefully restored old-timer trains to Gletsch in the Canton of Valais.
Furka pass
Αυγουστος 13
The Furka Pass links Andermatt in Canton Uri with Gletsch in Canton Valais and is part of the popular three-passes trip over the Furka, Grimsel and Susten. Coming from Central Switzerland and having passed through Andermatt, you begin the climb over the Furka Pass at the village of Realp. Here in summer you may see the Furka steam railway ready to puff its way over the pass. A few kilometres further on and you reach the hamlet of Tiefenbach. The road continues around a series of hairpin bends up to the pass head at 2431 metres altitude, with wonderful views of the Gotthard massif and the Ursen Valley. On the Valais side, after about three kilometres, you reach the Hotel Bélvèdere where the view opens up to the Rhone Glacier. It's worthwhile taking a detour to the ice grotto, which is re-cut into the glacier each year. In 1850, the Rhone Glacier swept down to the valley floor but today, in 2008, the glacier tongue is above the level of the hotel. The road continues to wind down to Gletsch at 1759 metres altitude at the foot of the FurkaPass and the Grimsel Pass, which leads to the Bernese Oberland. Gletsch basically consists of the tiny station of the Furka steam railway and the huge Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône, which still has the air of the glory days of the Alpine passes at the beginning of the 19th century. Since the Furka basis tunnel from Realp to Oberwald opened in 1982, a winter-safe rail passage with car transport has existed between the cantons of Uri and the Valais. Nevertheless, the spectacular trip over the pass by bicycle, motorbike, car or yellow postbus still remains the most attractive option.
The Furka Pass in Switzerland. Aerial Footage | 4K Drone Video
The Furka Pass (Furkapass), also made famous by a scene from James Bond 007 Goldfinger' is a gorgeous Swiss mountain pass. The pass also features the Rhone Glacier, once a famous attraction, but now disappearing year by year, probably because of global warming. The video also features the once famous Hotel Belvedere, once a major hotspot and celebrity destination and now closed because of the Rhone glacier's retreat and loss of appeal. View cinematic footage of the Historisches Alpinhotel Grimsel Hospiz and the dams around it, such as the Grimsel Dam. he first certified guesthouse of Switzerland was located at this exact place, way back in 1142. In 1932, the Grimsel Hospiz caused quite a sensation as it was the first electrically heated house in Europe. Environmental considerations had to be taken into account when the hotel was completely renovated between 2008 and 2010 and the entire hotel is now heated by using hydroelectric waste-heat. As a historic 4-star alpine hotel in the heart of the KWO catchment area, the Hotel Hospiz reigns majestically above the Grimsel reservoir lake (Grimselsee).
The Furka pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.431 m (7,976ft) above the sea level, located in one of the snowiest regions in Switzerland. It’s one of the world's most iconic, exhilarating and exciting drives, through the Swiss Alps. The pass was immortalized by the Aston DB5 / Ford Mustang car chase in James Bond's Goldfinger. It's one of the highest mountain roads of the Alps.
The pass links the Ursern valley in the canton of Uri with the municipality of Goms in the canton of Valais. It’s one of the highest paved roads in the country, and the road over the pass was built in 1867. As you drive along the pass's road, you may see the train that travels the Furka Pass chugging along through the mountainside, creating a picturesque scene for you to hold in your memory. Countless tourists are attracted by the unique mountain panorama, the Rhone Glacier with its ice grotto, the attractive options for hiking, climbing and skiing tours, as well as the reopened steam railway.
The drive is definitely worth it. The second part of the climb includes much more straight forward road, but it's also less steep. Don’t forget your camera! The road encompasses miles of stunning views through twisty hair pin corners, high elevations and steep grades. The Furka Pass also takes you within a few hundred meters of the Rhone Glacier, source of the Rhone river. Here you can park up and walk up to and actually inside the glacier itself. Travelers can actually walk through the glacier by booking a tour. Though the tunnel through the glacier is only 100 meters in length, you will want to make sure you dress warmly, because it doesn't take long for your body temperature to reach dangerous levels. Although the glacier has retreated dramatically in recent years, it still really is an incredible site, around 7km in length.
In 1964, the hairpin bends on the Furka pass earned their place in cinema history thanks to the James Bond film 'Goldfinger' in the scene in which Tilly Masterson attempts to snipe Goldfinger. It was filmed in front of the Rhone Glacier. If you want the full James Bond experience, you can even visit at the iconic petrol station in Andermatt where Bond and Tilly Masterson part ways following her failed attempt to assassinate Goldfinger – it’s now part of the Aurora Hotel. But you’ll probably look anything but Bond-style glamorous when tackling it: steep slopes, hairpin bends, switchbacks and sharp, blind curves make this a white-knuckle ride to all but the most experienced (or crazy) drivers. At least the road’s wide and perfectly surfaced – this is Switzerland, after all.

Regional Train Brig - Andermatt - Ride with the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (HD)
The video shows scenes from a ride with a regional train of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (Railway) from Brig to Oberwald, and later the same day, from Realp to Andermatt. The ride took place on June 30th, 2013. The train is pulled by a Deh 4/4 motor coach with a push-pull consist.
For the last leg of the ride, from Andermatt to Göschenen, a few cars were left in Andermatt as the grade down too Göschenen is too steep for longer trains.
The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) is a narrow gauge railway with a track width of 1 meter. It was created in 2003 by merging the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn (FO) and the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn (BVZ). The network is 144 km (89.5 mi) long and takes passengers trom Disentis in the Canton of Graubünden to Zermatt in the Canton of Wallis. Between Realp and Oberwald, the line earlier crossed the Furka pass. However, this line has been replaced by a 15km long tunnel. On parts of the line, the trains operate with cog wheels, most notably on the Oberalp Pass, between Andermatt and Göschenen and near Grengiols and Fiesch.

============
The Furka Pass (2,429 m above sea level) connects the Urserental valley, the highest section of the valley of the Reuss, in the canton of Uri with the district of Goms (Rhone Valley) in the canton of Valais. It forms the European Watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The pass is closed during the winter season. A car shuttle train between Realp in the Urserental valley (north of Andermatt) and Oberwald (in the Obergoms), however, allows a connection between the two mountain cantons. The Hotel Belvédère lies at the western side at 2,272 m above sea level and is an ideal starting point for visits to the Rhone Glacier and the ice grotto.
From 1925 to 1981, the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn ran through the Switzerland's highest Alpine tunnel (2,160 m above sea level) in a cogwheel line which was not winterproof. 2010 saw the reopening of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway.
In 1964, the Furka Pass was the setting for some scenes of the James Bond classic movie Goldfinger (with Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe etc.).
Furka-Oberalp-Bahn - German • Great Railways
The Furka-Oberalp-Bahn (FO) was a narrow-gauge railway company in Switzerland. It merged 1 January 2003 with the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn to Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB), which today operates the meterspurigen FO routes. The 97 kilometer long railway connects the cantons of Graubünden, Uri and Wallis. Originally the line ran over the Furka Pass but due to the harsh winter conditions it could only run in the summer. In 1983 the winter operation was also possible thanks to the construction of the Furka base tunnel. The almost 4 kilometer long former Schöllenen line connects Göschenen to the (old) Gotthard line with the main line in Andermatt.

[Wikipedia] Brig-Visp-Zermatt-Bahn ABDeh 6/6
The Brig-Visp-Zermatt-Bahn ABDeh 6/6, later known as the BDeh 6/6, and later still as the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn BDeh 6/6, was a two member class of metre gauge, rack rail, electric multiple units operated by the Brig-Visp-Zermatt-Bahn (BVZ), and later by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB), in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland.
The class was so named under the Swiss locomotive and railcar classification system. According to that system, the class's original classification, ABDeh 6/6, denotes an electric railcar with first and second class compartments, a baggage compartment, and a total of six axles, all of which are drive axles fitted with cogwheels for rack rail operation.
The later classification of this class, BDeh 6/6, signifies a vehicle with no first class facilities, but otherwise the same characteristics as a vehicle of the original classification.
The class entered the BVZ fleet in 1960. Both of its members were rebuilt in 1981-82. From then onwards, both vehicles were confined to Zermatt Shuttle trains. In 2003, shortly after the MGB had become both members' owners (following a merger between the BVZ and the Furka Oberalp Bahn), they were withdrawn from service and scrapped.
Railfanning view of a large modular model railway layout built in FREMO Free-Mo Modutrak standard
Basically, there are two methods to build a model railway layout. On the hand a model railway layout can be built on a single plate. In this case width and length finally define the size of the whole layout. On the other hand single modules are built by members of a model railway club. Because of consistent standards in module construction, wiring, DCC, track and scenery, these single modules can be fitted to a very large modular model railway. For example, FREMO, Free-Mo, Mod-U-Trak and Modutrak are well known standards for building those model railway modules. In this video Pilentum presents a model train cab ride along a very large modular model railway layout. There are more than 50 meters of HO scale railway tracks in narrow gauge. The whole model railroad layout presents the famous Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway in Switzerland. This Swiss mountain metre gauge railway operates between the Realp railway station in the Canton of Uri and the Oberwald railway station in the Canton of Valais, crossing the Gletsch railway station also in the Canton of Valais. Please, visit and enjoy thousands of model railway photos. Thank you.

The Furka-Oberalp-Bahn climbed the Fukra Pass until 1981 in a cogwheel line which was not winterproof and through the summit tunnel, completed in 1925. With an altitude of 2,160 m above sea level, this is Switzerland's highest alpine tunnel.
Furka Pass
The Furka pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.431 m (7,976ft) above the sea level, located in one of the snowiest regions in Switzerland. The pass links the Ursern valley in the canton of Uri with the municipality of Goms in the canton of Valais. Furkapass is the fourth highest paved mountain pass in the country, and the road over the pass was built in 1867. The pass was imortalised by the Aston DB5 / Ford Mustang car chase in James Bond's Goldfinger. It's one of the highest mountain passes of the Alps. The road is certainly breathtaking and it has a fearsome reputation. The road over the Furka Pass was built for strategic military reasons and was the longest pass road in Switzerland when it was opened in 1867. Nowadays it’s one of the highest Alpine passes in the country. This road is very exciting and sometimes very exposed and unsecured driveway in innumerable twists and turns. This infamous road is tightly hairpinned and bumped, an exquisite winding mountain drive with sharp and blind curves and hairpin switchbacks leading the traveler over the mountains. The road is difficult and it’s a nightmare in the wet or dark (or both). The road encompasses miles of stunning views through twisty hair pin corners, high elevations and steep grades. The curvy road with the stunning road and the glacier at the top makes this whole diversion worth it. The switchbacks are scary and exhilirating. Take a lot of time to travel this road - stop and check all the views. It's really incredible. There are plenty of places to stop and have a view / snack. It is highly recommended that you take a short brake in the serpentine of the glacier front and to grab a closer look of famous Rhone Glacier. However, be careful. Signs indicate that the glacier is still loosing ice that crashes down from time to time into the valley. The pass is closed in winters, but anytime it can be closed when the access is not cleared of snow. Avalanches and heavy snowfalls can sometimes block some sections of the road and can be extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. Conditions can change quickly and be harsh. Road closures can be frequent, so check conditions before traveling!

Mit seinen beiden Seitenarmen bildete er seinerzeit die grösste Eismasse der Alpen.
The Trift Glacier is located in the Bernese Oberland south of the Gadmental valley. This valley glacier borders on the canton of Uri in the east and the canton of Valais in the southeast. The Tieralplistock (3,383 m above sea level) marks the southernmost point of the Trift Glacier and is located on the watershed between the Aar and Rhone rivers. A connection to the Rhone Glacier (in the canton of Valais) exists via the firn-covered Undri Triftlimi (3,081 m above sea level).
The Rhone Glacier is a valley glacier north of the Furka Pass (2,429 m above sea level) and is the source region of the river Rhone, which flows through France into the Mediterranean Sea. The ice-age Rhone Glacier, together with its tributaries, used to form the biggest mass of ice in the Alps.
