Gajanur is a village 12 km from Shivamogga in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, India. The Tunga River flows through the village. Gajanur is well known for the dam built across the river. 1 km from Gajanur there is place called Sakkarebaylu which is an elephant training camp run by the government of India. located on the banks of the Tunga river. It is 15 km from Mandagadde bird life sanctuary.

We travelled from Chikmagalur to Gajanur dam about 110 Kms & reached the place in the noon enjoying the drive at a reasonable pace rather than rushing to the destination. Water was released from only two gates but the dam was almost full.
We avoided visiting the Sakkarebaylu Elephant training camp as we always believed that wild animals should be left free in the forest & not captured for man's selfish needs.
