Neon Canyon - Start to Finish (from Egypt Trailhead)

Neon Canyon from Start to Finish, beginning at the Egypt Trailhead (off of Hole in the Rock Road, near Escalante, Utah in the Grand Staircase National Monument area), camping near the petroglyphs, and hiking Neon Canyon along the rim and then dropping in and rappelling down into the Golden Cathedral.

This was late July 2012, so check current conditions at or similar site.

Harris Wash to Neon Canyon - Escalante Canyons

The Escalante Canyons in southern Utah are some of the most popular and visited desert canyons in Utah. Coyote Gulch being the most popular. This trip was to make our way down Harris Wash to the Escalante River and then to Fence Canyon where we hiked up to the Golden Cathedral in Neon Canyon. The Golden Cathedral is an absolute must see for anyone traveling to this area of the state.
In this video you see a group of Utah Valley University Students as part of a Wilderness Skills class for the Outdoor Recreation Management major enjoying an excellent hike.

There was a detour taken in this trip that caused a 11 mile detour along the rim of the canyon following a Jeep trail. A massive flash flood had destroyed all of the visible trails in the area and within the first hundred yards of leaving the car, we missed the entrance to the canyon, and followed the Jeep road that seemed to be the obvious trail into Harris Wash. This actually turned out to be a good thing in the end, as Harris Wash was totally over ridden with Russian Olive and the bush whacking was almost unbearable at times with the nasty Russian Olive thorns.

This is a great trip if you've got two cars and are willing to make the shuttle. Enjoy!

Natural wonders - Golden Cathedral
The Golden Cathedral is a unique hiking destination within lower Neon Canyon in the Grand Staircase-Escalante area. The Cathedral is locates just over 3/4 of a mile up Neon Canyon from its confluence at the Escalante River, and consists of a great, domed pour-off from upper Neon Canyon, where the water has dug three separate pothole arches into the overhang. When the sun is overhead, the daylight shines down through the arches in great, golden columns.
Getting to the Golden Cathedral is tricky, and requires a good measure of navigational skill. This hike does not take visitors the entire length of Neon Canyon—that trip is technical and strenuous, though very much worth the effort. This trip will only take visitors into the lower canyon, below the pour-off.

▶︎ Free and easy access to Capitol Reef National Park!
After visiting two very popular Utah parks -- Zion and Bryce Canyon -- Capitol Reef was a breath of fresh air. And one of our favorite parts about visiting this park is that it was almost totally free!
When we arrived at the visitor center, they informed us that their only developed campground, Fruita Campground (first-come-first-served only, not reservable) was full for the night, and rangers were ready with a handout full of alternative camping areas. We had not dabbled into BLM (Bureau of Land Management) camping before, but this experience would encourage us to utilize it throughout the rest of our year-long trip to the national parks.
This “campground” is located about a mile outside of the national park, which allows great access to everything inside Capitol Reef. Usually free camping like this is harder to discover, but this pull-off is just off the road.
Benefits of camping in BLM land include the cost (free!), solitude (you can be as far away from people as you’d like), and easy access to the national park (in fact, most national parks are surrounded with National Forest Service or BLM land!). Downsides, of course, include the lack of amenities, the sometimes uninspiring scenery, and the feeling of uneasiness (can I really just camp here? For free?)
Capitol Reef’s BLM camping is plentiful, but this site was definitely the best. We were able to drive up on a high ridge of the pull-out area that the RVs could not easily access, so we felt alone and watched the g...
