Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933, it was officially renamed Hoover Dam, for President Herbert Hoover, by a joint resolution of Congress in 1947.
Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume (when it is full). The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.

Boulder City to Hoover Dam & Hoover Dam Railroad Tunnel Trail ride.
For my birthday my sweetheart (who I somehow convinced to marry me) flew me to Vegas. We next visited Desert Adventures in Boulder City, Nevada for an awesome mountain bike ride to Hoover Dam. The ride starts in Boulder City, descends to the Hoover Dam Railroad Tunnel Trail, and then finishes at Hoover Dam. Our host from Desert Adventures was Geno, who did a terrific job and made a great ride even more fun with lots of history and local info. I highly recommend the adventure.
Driving Through Historic Boulder City Home of Hoover Dam (Near Lake Mead) at Night
About 20 minutes from our home in Las Vegas, NV, we went for a drive through historic Boulder City, NV at night. Here's what we saw!
Boulder City, NV
Boulder City is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. It is approximately 20 mi from the city of Las Vegas. As of the 2010 census, the population of Boulder City was 15,023.
Area: 202.7 sq miles (525 km²)
Boulder City Nevada
Hi, my name is Jennifer, with Desert Adventures, out of Boulder City, Nevada. And, Boulder City is the town that built the Hoover Dam. Initially, when the, when the government announced the building of the Dam, workers came from all over the United States, in effort to find a job-that was during the Great Depression. Housing was not available for the workers. Before Boulder City was built, perspective workers would live in Tent City, shanty towns, one of which being, on the Colorado River, called Rag Town. Conditions were hot, unsanitary, there was some deaths due to heat-related illness. Boulder City needed to be built.
Six companies, the company that built the Dam, as well as the federal government, made it a priority to build the town for the workers to live in. What their focus was, to provide a clean living and working environment for the Dam workers. The town was designed to house approximately 5,000 workers. The status of the workers on the Hoover Dam reflected in their house sizes, and locations. The most important employees were housed on the top of the hill, near the heart of town. Managers were housed just a little bit further down the hill. And, homes for manual labourers were located further down the hill, away from the pubic buildings and parks. Boulder City was originally built as a temporary town for the Hoover Dam workers. As you can see, it's still a vibrant city today. I'm Jen, with Desert Adventures, your premiere adventure company, located in Boulder City, Nevada.

Boulder City
In 1928, President Calvin Coolidge signed the Boulder Canyon Project Act which authorized the building of Hoover Dam and the creation of Boulder City. For years, the Colorado River flowed uninterrupted from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California. Its unpredictable path often caused flooding in the spring, and then it would dry up in the summer. By the 1920s, it became apparent that something needed to be done to control the route of the lower Colorado. The only way to do this was to construct a dam and harness the river while providing flood control and badly needed electricity to the western states. A company composed of six separate construction companies was awarded the contract to build the dam in 1931.

Found a Baby Rattlesnake near The Hoover Dam! (Boulder City, Nevada)
We were walking the Railroad Tunnels trail from Lake Mead to Hoover Dam and back and saw a baby rattlesnake! They usually appear around dusk and dawn! We only noticed it because of the loud rattle, very close to the trail path too!
Around 30 minutes from Las Vegas!

The Largest Concrete Dam in the US - The Hoover Dam (720p)
This engineering technology video depicts the United States built Hoover Dam. Its design was impressive, once known as Boulder Dam and designed in concrete, known in physics as a arch-gravity dam. Its located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It took 5 years to construct, between 1931 &1936 during the Great Depression, and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort of design, involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives at a financial building cost of $49 million ($836 million adjusted for inflation). It gets its common name from President Herbert Hoover who commissioned the United States Federal Government project.
The largest hydroelectric technology plant in the United States is at Grand Coulee Dam. Its three power plants have a capacity of 6,809 MW, and it generates, on average, about 21 billion KWh, while Hoover Dam's power plant has a capacity of 2,074 MW and generates approximately 4 billion KWh a year.
Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of designs and techniques were all but theory at the time.

Las Vegas to Hoover Dam is a very popular day trip. It only takes 40 minutes from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam tours are also very popular. Hoover Dam water release is one of the primary attraction of this location, lot of people do the Hoover Dam water bottle experiment or sometimes with a basketball. There are several Hoover Dam documentary on different conspiracy about Hoover Dam’s construction or that the Hoover Dam will collapse after a major earthquake. There are two Hoover Dam tour available, I prefer the Full Hoover Dam tour instead of the Powerplant tour because it longer and gives you free access to the visitors center, which is otherwise an additional $10. If you have seen videos on American History then you’ve probably seen Hoover Dam pictures or Hoover Dam Lake – Lake Mead, the largest man made reservoir in United States. Hoover Dam Bridge is also a popular attraction. Hoover Dam is also a popular Hollywood movie set. Movies like Transformers, San Andreas, and Viva Las Vegas were shot here in Hoover Dam. Fallout new Vegas hoover dam was also a very popular topic after video game Fallout added Hoover Dam as a part of two major battle location.

During the years of lobbying leading up to the passage of legislation authorizing the dam in 1928, the press generally referred to the dam as Boulder Dam or as Boulder Canyon Dam, even though the proposed site had shifted to Black Canyon. The Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928 (BCPA) never mentioned a proposed name or title for the dam. When Secretary Wilbur spoke at the ceremony starting the building of the railway between Las Vegas and the hoover dam site on September 17, 1930, he named the dam Hoover Dam, citing a tradition of naming dams after Presidents, though none had been so honored during their terms of office.
