Riding the Alaska Railroad's Hurricane Turn Train | Landmark Adventures
Riding the Alaska Railroad's Hurricane Turn Train is an authentic experience unlike anything else in the state.
Departing from Talkeetna, the Hurricane Turn leaves civilization behind as it makes a round-trip journey through the wilds of the Indian River Valley. Along the way, passengers take advantage of the Hurricane’s unique flagstop service--the last of its kind in North America--to get on or off the train anywhere along its backcountry route for access to remote cabins, hunting and fishing.
The train pauses over Hurricane Gulch, on the longest and tallest bridge on the entire Alaska Railroad, before it reverses course for the trip back to Talkeetna. Wildlife abounds along the route, and we were even able to catch a glimpse of Denali towering over the braided Susitna River near the end of the journey.

Alaska Railroad ARR 4326 JBER 6 Jun 14
The southbound Denali Star races through Fort Richardson, AK just about a half an hour outside of Anchorage. Track speed here is 60mph, and while I don't think this train was doing quite that, it was going fast enough to sadly outpace the sucker hole you see on the left side of the screen when the video starts!
Glass-domed Train from Talkeetna to Denali, Alaska
As our train meandered across the unadulterated landscape, I found that I was reassuring myself that it was real. Such scenery…as though it was “too beautiful” to be true. I rode along with Awe, Wonder, and Amazement, as we all shared in an exchange of childlike fascination. While being a train ride, I’m inclined to default to recommending it, but truly, this stretch of track will lead you through a mere part of the heart of Alaska, but it will invite you to the center of your being, where you're reacquainted with your youth.
This ride was just over four hours, where passengers relaxed in their comfortable seats, while enjoying refreshments and narration, or enjoyed the brisk air on the cars’ “porches.” Lunch was enjoyed on the lower level of the car. All luggage, carry-ons included, were stowed, not to be seen again until disembarkation. I should note that the cars we rode in on this trip were private cars, not to be confused with Alaska Railroad’s Goldstar Service cars, found on its website; I indulged in one, though, to Seward:

-Today, at over a century's distance from the first ascent of Denali, but in the shadow of the mountain is the modern community of Talkeetna. K'dalkitnu 'food caching place' by its ancient Dena'ina. It is situated at the confluence of the Talkeetna, Susitna and Chulitna rivers., This town, set among beautiful birch, boasts of an eclectic array of visitor activites, historic sites, shops, and museum. Talkeetna is actually closer to the mountain than the official entrance to the National park named for it. If you want to add your name to the list of the 1000 plus peolle who attemot a climb of the mountain each year it is here at the Talkeetna Ranger Station that your climb must be registerd.
-Today's climbing route is significantly shorter than the original Stuck-Karstens expedition.
-Park ranger presentations on mountain climb routes and preparations occur twice a week at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.
The lodge is owned by Cook Inlet Regtional Incorporated, known as CIRI. CIRI is one of thirteen Alaska native regional corporations, and has a shareholder base of more than 8,000 alaska native people. In effect the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge is the hosting of visitors by the fist peole of this land.

ALASKA EARTHQUAKE: Photos Show Severe Damage To Roads, Bridges And Businesses!
ALASKA EARTHQUAKE: Photos Show Severe Damage To Roads, Bridges And Businesses!
Thousands of people remain without power and it will take weeks to repair all infrastructure wrecked by a huge 7.0 quake, though President Donald Trump has allowed funds for federal agencies to coordinate disaster relief efforts.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck just outside Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, on Friday, prompting Governor Bill Walker to deem it a disaster, after which the US president “declared that an emergency exists in the State of Alaska” and ordered the government to free up federal funding to battle “emergency conditions in the areas affected by an earthquake.”
To help the state deal with substantial damage, the president also authorized the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate “all disaster relief efforts.”
While the Alaska earthquake has claimed no lives, officials say, the state has sustained quite substantial infrastructural damage. Cracked and collapsed roads, damaged buildings now plague parts of the state. People were also left without power.
“The impact is very real, the impact is very hard, and it will require apparently a great deal of recovery and effort,”’ United States Senator from Alaska Lisa Murkowski said. “There are homes without power. There is some concern that you may have gas line breaks that could lead to potential further disasters.”
State authorities believe it could take up to two weeks alone to fix the roads that were damaged by the earthquake. For now, the Alaska Railroad remains shut down until all of the tracks could be inspected. Schools in Anchorage and Mat-Su will remain closed until Wednesday so officials can assess the damage.

Tarrying in Talkeetna
Many of you may remember the town of Cicily that the TV show 'Northern Exposure' took place in. Talkeetna is the town that gave the inspiration to what the town of Cicily was like.
I fit a lot into the few days I was there:
•A Rail'n Raft trip with Denali View Raft Adventures
•Hiking the Kesugi Range in Denali State Park
•Flightseeing into the Alaska Range landing at Denali Base Camp to pick up climbers with Alaska Air Taxi
•Renting a fat tire bike from Northern Shore Cyclery to explore some of the off road areas of Talkeetna
•Attending the local 4th of July parade
•Running in the Talkeetna All Trails 10k
•Trying treats from local eateries
•Staying at 2 different Airbnbs in the area, a tiny house at The Grove and a yurt at Talkeetna East Side Cabins.
I met lots of great people at my accommodations and on the trails. I ran around Tigger Lake early in my stay and crossed paths with the trail organizer for the race. On one of his signs marking the race course he wrote Go Scott (Maine). On race day I got asked if I was Scott from Maine quite a bit. That's where my name 'Scott From Maine' came from. Talkeetna requires a lot more than a drive through through their downtown. Dig a little deeper and there's lots to explore!

Alaska: Flight Tour around Denali, The Great One
We were originally scheduled to land a ski plane on Ruth Glacier Amphitheatre, near Denali, but due to cloud cover, we had to adjust our tour to a flight weaving near The Great One (Denali), its surrounding peaks, and over their glaciers, instead, in a Piper Navajo Chieftain. It was, nevertheless, ...indescribable.

Alaska has more than 40% of the nation’s surface water resources including over 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes greater than 5 acres and numerous creeks and ponds.
...that's just the ones over 5 acres in size. Most of the lakes are unnamed, we were told.
Alaska has over 33,000 miles of coastline. It is the only state to have coastlines on two different oceans: Arctic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

The Hurricane, or Hurricane Turn, is a passenger train operated by the Alaska Railroad between Talkeetna and Hurricane Gulch in Alaska. This train is unique in that rather than making scheduled station stops, it is a flag stop train meaning that passengers between Talkeetna and Hurricane can wave a white cloth anywhere along the route and the train will stop to pick them up. ...The Hurricane Turn is one of the last true flagstop trains in the United States.
