Hawaii: Adventures in Kailua
My second day in Hawaii! My gracious hosts drove me to the eastern side of Oahu to check out the site, beaches, (and for them to buy a motorcycle). We later went out to dinner with one of their friends. I'm not sure if it was the sun, the day, or the jet lag, but by the day was over, I was exhausted!

Oahu-Things to do: Kailua Beach, Polynesian Culture Center, Temple and Tacos
Made a few stops on our way to the Polynesian Culture Center. Kailua Beach was about a 25-35 minute drive from Waikiki. The drive to get there was half the fun, on the way you get to tour the mountains, go through tunnels, and take advantage of a great scenic way point at the Pali lookout.
I highly recommend purchasing the Ambassador package at the Polynesian Cultural Center. That way you see all the countries/shows and participate in all the hands on activities they offer. We didn't get to do everything before they closed (12pm-5:30pm hours)

Oahu Adventures: Popoi'a (Flat) Island Paddle in Kailua
This Oahu adventure goes to Flat Island, or Popoi'a Island. Flat island is a small island off of Oahu that is one of the easiest places to paddle, kayak, or swim to from Kailua, Hawaii.
Check out the insanely gorgeous views on the island as we explore this state seabird sanctuary and enjoy the beautiful views this little gem has to offer.
For more information on visiting the island, check out this article about paddling to Popoia Island:

Kailua Beach Review Windward Oahu Hawaii (tourists NOT welcome here by locals)
I have mixed feelings about this beach. First let’s talk about the obvious here…it’s an amazing looking beach. The optics here are amazing; calm turquoise waters, even on a cloudy day. The amenities are sufficient with public restrooms, changing areas, areas, and showers.
The beach is relatively steep, but it’s sufficiently wide enough, which is more than can be said for many beaches on Oahu. The parking lot is only moderately sized for a beach such as this, and many visitors have resorted to parking on the street in front of resident’s houses in this small neighborhood. Additionally, the lack of hotels and legal vacation rentals, have led to an increase in illegal rentals (Airbnb) and the trouble that comes along with it. Combine all of this lack of hotels, small crowded streets, lack of parking with large crowds of beachgoers, and it should be a surprise to no one that most residents here have no problem vocalizing that tourist are not welcome here.
Being on the windward side of the island, this brings with it some particular downsides. The most obvious would be the windward side of the island is facing the brunt of the prevailing winds, and this also has an effect on the visibility in the water. As you can see in this video, between the light fine sand, and the prevailing winds, the visibility was nonexistent, which results on most days making this not a choice snorkeling location.

From the website: Kailua Beach is a short drive over the mountains on the scenic Pali Highway from Waikiki. Situated on the island’s east shore, the beach is located in Kailua, a bedroom community of 36,513 people that attracts some 15,000 visitors per year. In addition to Kailua Beach, the town is blessed with another picture-perfect beach. Lanikai Beach, which some say is the best swimming beach in Hawaii, is known for its long expanse of powdery sand beach and its clear turquoise water

About Kailua, Hawaii
Kailua is a bay town on the east side of the island of Oahu. Oahu is one of the smaller Hawaiian Islands comprising 600 square miles of the state of Hawaii’s 6,400 total square miles. Although it is small, Oahu is the clear economic center of Hawaii. The capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, is on Oahu. Oahu is also home to 2/3 of Hawaii’s population – 950,000 of Hawaii’s total population of 1.4 million.
The town of Kailua boasts an amazing three mile stretch of white sand beach and turquoise green water. The land then rises gently briefly before rising sharply into lush green mountains with tall waterfalls.
The beauty of Kailua has made it the vacation place for President Obama when he vacations in Hawaii with his family. Kailua also has a military base just north of the Kailua Bay. Kailua is less than a half hour drive to the state capital, Honolulu, the airport, the University of Hawaii, and world famous Waikiki. Even so, Kailua has a small-town feel in part because the city does not allow large scale hotels.
