KAILUA BEACH PARK - KAILUA - OAHU - HAWAII

Magic Sands Beach Park and La'aloa Beach Park (Kailua-Kona, Big Island, HI)
Having a look around La'aloa Beach Park / Magic Sands Beach Park. It's in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii!
Magic Sands Beach Park
Address: Ali'i Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
Hours: Closes 11PM
Public park with white sand beach & rocky shoreline, offering lifeguard-overseen swimming & surfing.
------
Laʻaloa Bay is a popular recreation area in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
Also known as Magic Sands or White Sands Beach, the official name is Laʻaloa Beach County Park. During calm weather, it is one of the only fine white sandy beaches in the Kailua-Kona area.
It is also sometimes called Disappearing Sands, since the sand is washed out in a storm several times a year. A strong surf break on the shore can be dangerous, but makes it a favorite for bodyboarding by experienced locals, even under moderate surf conditions.
Just north of the beach is Pahoehoe Beach County Park. Although the shoreline here is rocky lava with a few coral pebbles, there are picnic tables, restrooms, and running water. In the Hawaiian language, la'a loa means very sacred.
Several Archaeological sites are in the area.
The ruins of haukalua Heiau (an Ancient Hawaiian temple) are on a point just south of the beach, at the parking lot which was added in 2000.
The stone structure was cleared and restored and a small ceremonial platform (lele) constructed by descendants of the people who lived in this area for hundreds of years.
A small rocky cove south of the point is popular for scuba diving in calm conditions.
In 1994 after the County of Hawaii announced plans to build an 80 stall parking lot, Hawaiian Kupuna (elders) helped form a group known as the La’aloa Ohana (family). This led to agreements being made to create a Hawaiian Cultural/Educational center in 1995. In June 1995 more than 13 members of the La’aloa Ohana were arrested for attempted camping, even though according to police reports a majority of ohana had left the park, prior to its closing. The ohana continued to advocate for complete Preservation Planning and in 1997 a detailed Community based Preservation Plan was completed. The effect of this Plan was that only 25 parking stalls could be developed. While the County of Hawaii said in the 1997 Environmental Impact Statement that they would install protective measures for the Historic site prior to any construction, in 2000 they built the parking lot, and as of 2014 the Protective measures have yet to be completed.
In August 2014, based on the continued advocacy by La’aloa Ohana members, the State of Hawaii Historic Preservation Division, supported by the Department of Land and Natural Resources Conservation Investigators, forwarded to the Mayor of the County of Hawaii a scathing letter and demand they implement all of the Protective measures, or potentially they could face millions of dollars in fines. In December 2014 the County of Hawaii is currently starting to implement the Preservation Plan. Unfortunately many of the historic sites have now been severely damaged.
Based on the ongoing and tireless efforts of members of the La'aloa Ohana, on May 10, 2017 the County of Hawaii announced it would be closing the parking lot at La'aloa Beach Park on May 17, 2017, indefinitely, due to the ongoing desecration caused by the parking lot. Please visit the La'aloa Beach Park Facebook page for additional information, we look forward to your kokua.
It is located on Aliʻi Drive in the Kona District at coordinates 19°35′38″N 155°58′17″W.
About a mile to the north is Holualoa Bay, and a mile to the south is Kahaluʻu Bay.

Aloha!~
Lanikai Beach
Lanikai means “Heavenly Sea” and this heavenly stretch of beach is often ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. Unlike many of the other beaches on Oahu, Lanikai remains relatively calm throughout the year. This makes it perfect for a relaxing day with friends or family.
During three-day holiday weekends, the city doesn't allow parking along streets and shoulders from 10 am to 3 pm
There really are no accommodations at Lanikai Beach. The parking is minimal, there are no restrooms, and there are no lifeguards.

Annual 'Dr. Beach' list names Oahu's Kailua best in North America
(23 May 2019) LEAD IN :
In Kailua the sand is soft and white, the water is clear and calm, and the view is exactly what you might expect from a beach in the Hawaiian Islands.
Those are among the reasons Oahu's Kailua Beach Park has been selected as the best stretch of sand for an annual list of top U.S. beaches.
STORY-LINE:
A stroll along the sand at Oahu's Kailua Beach Park in Hawaii.
This sandy shore has been named as the best beach in the United States by Dr. Beach .
Stephen Leatherman, a coastal scientist and professor at Florida International University has been drafting his annual list under the alias Dr. Beach since 1991.
Leatherman uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, with the most important categories being water cleanliness, safety and management of the beach environment and its facilities.
Leatherman uses data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to grade the beaches on water quality and has been to all the beaches on his list.
Beaches in Hawaii are consistently ranked high, or at the very top, of his list.
In recent years Leatherman has been giving extra credit to beaches that prohibit smoking, which all Oahu beaches do, and thinks other beaches around the state and country should follow suit.
Leatherman also looks for powdery soft white sand, something Kailua Beach Park has in abundance.
Braden Marquez, 18, who grew up in Kailua says he is worried about overcrowding, but is also hopeful for the future of his hometown.
This beach is pretty special to me just because my family has been coming here for years and years, he says.
Another Hawaii resident Jacob Paet is also a fan.
Well I guess the advantage out here is that the sun sets right behind us towards that direction. However, this gives you a shade in one of the hottest parts of the day.
Vari Singh and her family are visiting Oahu from Los Angeles and spending a day in Kailua.
The color of the sea is something like we've never seen before. The sand is super soft and fun to play with, it makes good sandcastles, she says.
For the first 25 years of ranking, any beach that won the top spot on Leatherman's list was retired and became ineligible for inclusion in subsequent years.
But in 2015, Dr. Beach cleared the slate to allow any beach in the nation to once again be eligible, resetting the clock, and perhaps the relevance, on his annual contest.
Kailua was named the best beach in 1998, making it a two-time winner.
Leatherman is again retiring new winners and posting them on his website.
Leatherman's goal in producing the list each year, he says, is to reward high quality, safe beaches that balance nature with accessibility and amenities.
He hopes beaches that haven't made his list will make changes for both a better experience and a healthier coastal ecosystem.
