Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Kailua
Kailua is a town on the east coast of the island of Oahu, in Hawaii. Long stretches of sand on Kailua Bay include Kailua Beach Park, a water sports hub, and Kalama Beach Park, with its gentle waves. Quiet Lanikai Beach overlooks the tiny, bird-rich Mokulua Islands. High above the beach, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Ka’iwa Ridge Trail) leads to old military bunkers. The weekly Kailua Farmers' Market sells local produce.
Kailua is a census-designated place (CDP) in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It lies in the Koʻolaupoko District of the island of Oʻahu on the windward coast at Kailua Bay. It is in the judicial district and the ahupua'a named Ko'olaupoko. It is 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Honolulu – over Nu‘uanu Pali. The population was 38,635 at the 2010 census. In the Hawaiian language Kailua means two seas or two currents, a contraction of the words kai (meaning sea or sea water) and ʻelua (meaning two); it is so named because of the two lagoons in the district or the two currents which run through Kailua Bay.
Kailua is primarily a residential community, with a centralized commercial district along Kailua Road. The population was 50,000 in 1992. Places of note in Kailua include Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai Beach, Kawai Nui Marsh, Maunawili Falls, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii. It was home to Barack Obama’s winter White House and also of the famous South African businessman Ridwan Karrim.

Kailua Beach Park, Beautiful Beach on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii: Great for Families and Kids
Annual 'Dr. Beach' list names Oahu's Kailua best in North America
(23 May 2019) LEAD IN :
In Kailua the sand is soft and white, the water is clear and calm, and the view is exactly what you might expect from a beach in the Hawaiian Islands.
Those are among the reasons Oahu's Kailua Beach Park has been selected as the best stretch of sand for an annual list of top U.S. beaches.
STORY-LINE:
A stroll along the sand at Oahu's Kailua Beach Park in Hawaii.
This sandy shore has been named as the best beach in the United States by Dr. Beach .
Stephen Leatherman, a coastal scientist and professor at Florida International University has been drafting his annual list under the alias Dr. Beach since 1991.
Leatherman uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, with the most important categories being water cleanliness, safety and management of the beach environment and its facilities.
Leatherman uses data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to grade the beaches on water quality and has been to all the beaches on his list.
Beaches in Hawaii are consistently ranked high, or at the very top, of his list.
In recent years Leatherman has been giving extra credit to beaches that prohibit smoking, which all Oahu beaches do, and thinks other beaches around the state and country should follow suit.
Leatherman also looks for powdery soft white sand, something Kailua Beach Park has in abundance.
Braden Marquez, 18, who grew up in Kailua says he is worried about overcrowding, but is also hopeful for the future of his hometown.
This beach is pretty special to me just because my family has been coming here for years and years, he says.
Another Hawaii resident Jacob Paet is also a fan.
Well I guess the advantage out here is that the sun sets right behind us towards that direction. However, this gives you a shade in one of the hottest parts of the day.
Vari Singh and her family are visiting Oahu from Los Angeles and spending a day in Kailua.
The color of the sea is something like we've never seen before. The sand is super soft and fun to play with, it makes good sandcastles, she says.
For the first 25 years of ranking, any beach that won the top spot on Leatherman's list was retired and became ineligible for inclusion in subsequent years.
But in 2015, Dr. Beach cleared the slate to allow any beach in the nation to once again be eligible, resetting the clock, and perhaps the relevance, on his annual contest.
Kailua was named the best beach in 1998, making it a two-time winner.
Leatherman is again retiring new winners and posting them on his website.
Leatherman's goal in producing the list each year, he says, is to reward high quality, safe beaches that balance nature with accessibility and amenities.
He hopes beaches that haven't made his list will make changes for both a better experience and a healthier coastal ecosystem.

Mayor Peter Carlisle has vetoed Bill 11, which would have extended a ban on commercial activities, such as kayak rentals, at Kailua and Kalama beach parks.
Carlisle said the bill was too broad.
The City Council had passed the bill 7-2 on July 11. The bill would have extended a partial weekend ban to all days.
Regardless of how much a total ban at Kailua and Kalama beach parks might make good sense, I am concerned that allowing this bill to become law will make it harder to refuse other neighborhoods wishing to do the same down the road, Carlisle said in a news release. The better approach is to work on rules island-wide and the Department of Parks and Recreation is doing this now.Carlisle said it is likely the council will override his veto.
A majority of those testifying at the April 19 meeting at Kailua High School favored a total ban.
More than 1,200 people have signed an online petition supporting a complete ban on commercial activity at Kailua and Kalama beaches. ( Honolulu Advertiser - July 24, 2012)

Kalama Beach Park by My Name Is Adventure
Aloha. My name is Adventure. I’ll be your host today, as I take you to Kalama Bay Beach Park, formerly the Boettcher Estate, which takes up 4 acres and is located in Kailua, on the east side of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii.
The surrounding area is called Kalama, which means “The Torch” in the Hawaiian language.
Kalama was Kailua’s first housing tract, which was developed in 1925 by Harold Castle, who named it after Queen Kalama, who was the wife of King Kamehameha III, who previously owned the land in the Kailua area.
The home that sits on the property was designed for Boettcher in 1937 and later became a park in 1978 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
It is located near the intersection of Kalaheo Avenue and Hauoli Street at 248 North Kalaheo Avenue in Kailua.
Please be aware that the park closes at 6pm and that means a gate that closes and locks any remaining vehicles inside of the parking lot. Be sure to leave by 6pm or you could get a criminal trespassing ticket from the police requiring a court appearance. They are serious on Oahu about park closing hours.
Typical park rules apply to this park, such as no smoking or vaping, alcohol, fires, feeding of birds, tree climbing, disc throwing like frisbees or ball playing.
There are about 24 parking stalls at the park that are free, and are for park users only.
There is only one park table for everyone to use, and it is located directly behind the house that sits on the property, fairly near the beach.
The sand is absolutely amazing here. It is Kailua sand and that means it is extra fine and extra soft.
You are going to love this beach as it is great to watch the sunrise, has incredibly amazing soft sand, nice pathways with easy walking to the beach from the parking lot, bathrooms with drinking water and showers to clean off with, free parking, and plenty of trees and bushes where you can retreat to should you get too hot out in the sun.
My name is Adventure.
Aloha.

Kailua Sunday Market (Oahu, Hawaii)
Every Sunday (weather permitting) this market is held in the elementry school parking lot. The prices are about average, and there are some interesting (unique things). I normally go when I'm hungry, which means I just want a sandwich.... which, they don't seem to have.
Paul Izak is playing the music under the tent. He's there most Sundays. The amps are solar powered, so no music on cloudy days. :-)
