Kawai Nui Marsh in Kailua on Oahu
- Kailua town can best be defined by its beautiful sandy beaches. But look mauka of that (toward the mountains), and you'll discover a piece of nature that is just as beautiful.
One place in particular would be the Kawai Nui Marsh, which is the largest wetlands in the state. To me, the best way to experience this place would be by taking a stroll through the marsh trail. It is tucked behind a residential neighborhood and stretches in and out of the marsh for about 1.5 miles. The trail leads to either a community park (if you start on the Pali Highway side) or a vista point (if you start near Kaha Street).
Many people enjoy biking, walking and jogging up and down this path. My sister and I often walk my dog here, too, as do many others. You'll see lots of ducks around and hear birds in the distance. Look closely into the shallow marsh waters, and you'll see tiny fish nipping at the surface.
The marsh trail is a nice alternative to visitors who want to do a hike while in Hawai'i but perhaps cannot endure the uphill climbs or uneven terrain. The Kawai Nui Marsh Trail is safe for all ages, young and old.
But what I love most about this trail is that it's usually always quiet. That's because it is far away from the busyness of Kailua town, protected in its own little peaceful bubble -- it seems. I'm always in awe when we come here during sunset. The soft golden rays that quietly slip behind the Ko'olau mountain range are simply breathtaking.

About Kailua, Hawaii
Kailua is a bay town on the east side of the island of Oahu. Oahu is one of the smaller Hawaiian Islands comprising 600 square miles of the state of Hawaii’s 6,400 total square miles. Although it is small, Oahu is the clear economic center of Hawaii. The capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, is on Oahu. Oahu is also home to 2/3 of Hawaii’s population – 950,000 of Hawaii’s total population of 1.4 million.
The town of Kailua boasts an amazing three mile stretch of white sand beach and turquoise green water. The land then rises gently briefly before rising sharply into lush green mountains with tall waterfalls.
The beauty of Kailua has made it the vacation place for President Obama when he vacations in Hawaii with his family. Kailua also has a military base just north of the Kailua Bay. Kailua is less than a half hour drive to the state capital, Honolulu, the airport, the University of Hawaii, and world famous Waikiki. Even so, Kailua has a small-town feel in part because the city does not allow large scale hotels.

Concerns rise for Maunawili Falls Trail and Kawainui Marsh
With about 5 million people visiting Oahu every year, just about every nook and cranny of the island is being explored. But when the great outdoors clashes with residential neighborhoods, there's bound to be disagreement. KITV4's Andrew Pereira sh Subscribe to KITV on YouTube now for more:

Kailua marsh land could be turning into a tourist attraction
Kailua locals and other nature conservatives oppose the state project that would turn the beloved Kawai Nui Marsh into a tourist attraction that would include building a five- mile hike. Subscribe to KITV on YouTube now for more:

Kailua, Hawaii: Locals Don't Want Tourists Anymore
Kailua, Hawaii has had enough of tourists. It's white sand beaches and laid back vibe draws people from around the world, including President Barack Obama and his family, but residents are tired of tourists.
The Kailua neighborhood board has asked the state tourism agency to stop inviting guests to spend the night in the town. There's an ongoing battle between how much tourism Kailua wants and how much it should allow. An increasing number of tourists have begun to extend their stays and try to experience Kailua like a local.
The neighborhood board is bothered by the successful bed-and-breakfast business and vacation rentals that are leased out for short terms without permits. The board believes places like this take away from Kailua's limited housing supply and lead to inflated costs and natives unable to buy property.
The residents don't like having strangers all around. It doesn't feel like a neighborhood when you don't know the people there, board member Lisa Marten told AP. If there's any sort of safety issue, there's no one to ask for help because you don't know them. Two of the three houses near Marten are vacation rentals. She says that a group of 20-year-olds stayed in one of the houses and did drugs the whole time, including smoking marijuana, which she could smell.

Marsh Hike
Hunt for Radian Pro FPV which crashed in the Kawai Nui Marsh in Kailua, Hawaii
On March 31, 2013, I lost my plane to the Marsh Goddess. A friend Iam and I were doing a simple line of site test flight with the new transmitter and receiver (though I had all the FPV stuff going), and I thought it would be simple. Unfortunately, there were issues with the aircraft turning in the wind (which oddly were from the north), then I had the stabilization system freak out which I had to start fighting. Needless to say I learned a lot from the experience. Here is the video.
Since I had flown the plane many times with the eagletree system, I was very comfortable with it, but I should have been more cautious. Changing from the a Spektrum transmitter to a new 9X UHF setup, more powerful motor and dual batteries (normally just one is onboard) mounted in the armpit under the wing, I should be looked at as a completely new maiden. Also, the planes accessories and stabilization should have been stripped off. In addition, I should have listen to my instincts that the winds from the north that kicked up (vice from the beach to the east) were not a good thing. What I immediately learned from that was north winds will push the plane into the marsh. The plane had the power to fly into the wind, I just couldn't control it. Maybe if I had been standing in a position to fly off the FPV monitor I might have been able to better control it, I don't know. I also should have put the Guardian stabilization on a switch to disable it (though I was lured into a false since of security since I had had no issues prior).
Live and learn.
You can see from the crash video, at like 25ft when the signal was lost it was out of control and could have gone any direction after that. My worry is it went beyond the stream out there. That would be bad.
Getting there was an incredible challenge. On crash day, Iam and I tried, but it was too far into the marsh. The UHF beacon was working so I was hopeful. I returned 2 days later (beacon no longer working) with fishing wader pants, but was unable to traverse the stream and gully since they were too deep. That stream and gully are like 5-6ft deep and the water plants make a wall of roots underneath that will tangle you. Honestly, you have a better chance pulling yourself on paddle board across the top. I had even blown up a pool raft, but my fear were I would get into the middle of the stream, raft would pop, and then I would tangle and drown struggling. The gully was so dense and deep it was even hard to swing the machete. I needed a new plan.
5 days later I tried again, went up to gully to shallower spot and got across and proceed to the site. It was rougher than I thought it would be. My .7mile journey from the field and back took 3.5hrs. Lots of hacking of high grass, walking in deep grassy molasses, on a warm day with little wind. I still could not find the plane. I have video of the area which I am trying to get up to YOUTUBE to give you an idea what it is like out there. The google earth image makes it look much easier than it is. What I even thought would be solid ground walking through brush, was all 1-2ft mush. Walking in waders kept me dry, but it was hot and awkward. The big tree appears to be on island of sorts, but that is just dense layer of dead grass on top of dead grass on top of water. I went through almost a complete large camelback and started rationing when I would worry I'd run out in the middle of the marsh. Talk about a workout. My wader boot were not full of marsh water but sweat. I lost 3 lbs of water weight, no kidding.
Here is the GoPro video cutdown summary of the trek out, but no plane found.(video died once due to overheating in waterproof case, and then ran out of battery):
I will need to get some aireal photos and do more film analysis.
____________MY NOTICE THE NEXT WEEK______________
CALLING ALL FPV'ERs FOR A MISSION
If anyone have an FPV plane or multi working, fly back and forth around the area filming, and possible we may be able to find it since the plane is mostly white foam with red stickers.
Any help appreciate. If we can see where it is, and it is around the area I went to, I may try again. Next time I would start at 7am when it is cooler vice 3pm.
Fortunately, my friends Iam and David flew there planes in search patterns and filmed, but nothing could be seen.

Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Kailua
Kailua is a town on the east coast of the island of Oahu, in Hawaii. Long stretches of sand on Kailua Bay include Kailua Beach Park, a water sports hub, and Kalama Beach Park, with its gentle waves. Quiet Lanikai Beach overlooks the tiny, bird-rich Mokulua Islands. High above the beach, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Ka’iwa Ridge Trail) leads to old military bunkers. The weekly Kailua Farmers' Market sells local produce.
Kailua is a census-designated place (CDP) in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It lies in the Koʻolaupoko District of the island of Oʻahu on the windward coast at Kailua Bay. It is in the judicial district and the ahupua'a named Ko'olaupoko. It is 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Honolulu – over Nu‘uanu Pali. The population was 38,635 at the 2010 census. In the Hawaiian language Kailua means two seas or two currents, a contraction of the words kai (meaning sea or sea water) and ʻelua (meaning two); it is so named because of the two lagoons in the district or the two currents which run through Kailua Bay.
Kailua is primarily a residential community, with a centralized commercial district along Kailua Road. The population was 50,000 in 1992. Places of note in Kailua include Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai Beach, Kawai Nui Marsh, Maunawili Falls, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii. It was home to Barack Obama’s winter White House and also of the famous South African businessman Ridwan Karrim.
