Waterloo - Stonewall Jackson
Columbia Musical Treasury of All Time Favorites presents:
The Fabulous Fifties. No this is not ABBA.The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday 18 June 1815 near Waterloo in present-day Belgium. An Imperial French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon was defeated by combined armies of the Seventh Coalition, one an Anglo-Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington and the other a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. It was the decisive battle of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon Bonaparte's last. The defeat at Waterloo put an end to Napoleon's ambitions to rule as Emperor of the French, and marked the end of his Hundred Days of return from exile.
Upon Napoleon's return to power in 1815, many states that had opposed him formed the Seventh Coalition and began to mobilise armies. Two large forces under Wellington and von Blücher assembled close to the northeastern border of France. Napoleon chose to attack in the hope of destroying them before they could join in a coordinated invasion of France with other members of the Coalition. The decisive engagement of this three-day Waterloo Campaign (16 June 19 June 1815) occurred at the Battle of Waterloo. According to Wellington, the battle was the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life.[5]
Napoleon delayed giving battle until noon on 18 June to allow the ground to dry. Wellington's army, positioned across the Brussels road on the Mont St Jean escarpment, withstood repeated attacks by the French, until, in the evening, the Prussians arrived in force and broke through Napoleon's right flank. At that moment, Wellington's Anglo-allied army counter-attacked and drove the French army in disorder from the field. Pursuing Coalition forces entered France and restored Louis XVIII to the French throne. Napoleon abdicated, surrendered to the British, and was exiled to Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
The battlefield is in present-day Belgium, about eight miles SSE of Brussels, and about a mile from the town of Waterloo. The site of the battlefield is today dominated by a large monument, the Lion Mound. As this mound used earth from the battlefield itself, the original topography of the part of the battlefield around the mound has not been preserved.
Meet your Waterloo meaning
Arrive at a final decisive contest.
Origin
This phrase refers to the 1815 battle outside the Belgian town of Waterloo in which Napoleon Bonaparte was finally defeated by forces commanded by the Duke of Wellington. The term Waterloo quickly became synonymous with anything difficult to master. It was referred to as such the year after the Battle of Waterloo by another English hero - Lord Byron, in a letter to Thomas Moore.
Waterloo 1815: The Image and the Battle
Peter Harrington, curator, Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection, University Library
In this bicentennial year of the iconic Battle of Waterloo, Peter Harrington will explore numerous artistic representations of the battle. Many have mythologized Waterloo, from Royal Academicians to amateur artists and veterans, by creating idealized images of the victory over Napoleon. The illustrated talk will include popular prints from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection and paintings from the European Collections. Following the talk, participants will be invited to view Waterloo 1815: A Bicentennial Exhibition, installed in the Hay’s exhibition gallery.

Riviera Travel - Bruges, Medieval Flanders, Amsterdam & the Dutch Bulbfields River Cruise
As you sail through picturesque waterways, discover the artisanal traditions of what was once the world’s greatest naval power, the remarkable art of the Flemish masters and the old Zuiderzee. First we explore the tiny villages of ‘old’ Holland from where ships of the 16th century Dutch East India Company set sail in search of silks and spices. Then it’s off to Arnhem scene of the famous battle in 1944 before visiting Antwerp, the city of Diamonds and Rubens with its main square lined by the tall step-gabled, merchant’s houses so typical of the ‘low’ countries. Then we explore the very best of Flanders in delightfully medieval Ghent. From here we see Ypres and one of Europe’s finest ‘old world’ cities, delightful Bruges. Listen to the sound of the carillion emanating wonderfully from the instantly recognisable Bell Tower, sip a coffee in the old market square and reflect on how wonderful life can be. Finally we discover one of nature’s most spectacular of floral displays, the kaleidoscope of colour that is the Dutch Bulbfields.
