NDOT News: Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge Inspections, January 2017
BOULDER CITY, NEV. -- The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will implement rolling sidewalk closures at the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, January 31 to February 3 for a routine safety inspection, which is done on a biennial basis.
The structural inspection will begin on the Arizona side of the bridge, prompting the closure of the Arizona side of the sidewalk. The Nevada portion of the sidewalk – roughly half of the sidewalk – will remain open. As the inspection moves to the Nevada side, the entire sidewalk will close. The sidewalk will be open for public use during off-project hours. In addition, lane restrictions into and leaving Nevada will be in place for the duration of the project. Traffic control devices will be in place; motorists are advised to heed them.
NDOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.
Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge near Hoover Dam, Nevada
Traffic with interesting sounds on the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge near Hoover Dam. Recorded with my SONY HX90V camera in FHD resolution. This is a very impressive bridge. There is a separate visitors parking area that provides access to visitors for sightseeing from the bridge. However from what I remember the sidewalk on this bridge is not interconnecting each side of the bridge for pedestrian crossing of the bridge from one side to the other side.
This video is showing SW views from the bridge and the nearby hill in the scene is from Arizona even though the location where the camera is in the state of Nevada

Lake Mead, Interstate 11, US 93 route
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is an arch bridge in the United States that spans the Colorado River between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The bridge is located within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, and carries U.S. Route 93 over the Colorado River. Opened in 2010, it was the key component of the Hoover Dam Bypass project, which rerouted US 93 from its previous routing along the top of Hoover Dam and removed several hairpin turns and blind curves from the route. It is jointly named for Mike O'Callaghan, Governor of Nevada from 1971–1979, and Pat Tillman, an American football player who left his career with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the United States Army and was later killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.
As early as the 1960s, officials identified the US 93 route over Hoover Dam to be dangerous and inadequate for projected traffic volumes. From 1998–2001, officials from Arizona, Nevada, and several federal government agencies collaborated to determine the best routing for an alternative river crossing. In March 2001, the Federal Highway Administration selected the route, which crosses the Colorado River approximately 1,500 feet (460 m) downstream of Hoover Dam. Construction of the bridge approaches began in 2003, and construction of the bridge itself began in February 2005. The bridge was completed in 2010 and the entire bypass route opened to vehicle traffic on October 19, 2010. The Hoover Dam Bypass project was completed within budget at a cost of $240 million; the bridge portion cost $114 million.[4]
The bridge was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States,[5] and incorporates the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. At 890 feet (270 m) above the Colorado River, it is the second highest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge, and is the world's highest concrete arch bridge.[6]
Upon the completion of the Boulder City Bypass, the bridge has become a part of Interstate 11, concurrent with US 93.

Hoover Dam, Pat Tillman Bridge, Lake Mead & Boulder City, USA
View of U.S. Highway 93, Hoover Dam (once known as the Boulder Dam), Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, Lake Mead and Boulder City located in the Nevada-Arizona border on Aug. 15, 2011.
Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on Sept. 30, 1935 by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was named in honor of President Herbert Hoover.
The Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated since about 1900 for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years before schedule.
Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. Heavily travelled U.S. 93 ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.
Just downstream from Hoover Dam is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge with two concrete arches that stretch 1,060 feet across the Black Canyon. Completed in late 2010 at a cost of US$240 million, the bridge links Nevada and Arizona along U.S. Highway 93.
The bridge is a big tourist attraction as it is the longest bridge of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and the second-tallest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado.
The bridge is named after former Nevada Gov. Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who was killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.

Hoover Dam Bypass Project | F&M MAFCO
F&M MAFCO, Inc. is a leading construction supply and equipment company, known internationally as The Powerful Solutions People, and we were able to play a major role in the construction of the Colorado River Bridge.
In September of 2006, construction was temporarily halted after the collapse of the cableway system. The cableway system is a critical part of the bridge construction project as it facilitates the delivery of construction materials across the entire canyon, a span of almost 2500 feet.
In March of 2007, we were was awarded the contract to supply two new 50-ton capacity High Line cableways.
The new cableway system consisted of four towers that were 335 feet tall, two head towers on the Nevada side, and two tail towers on the Arizona side. A total of 14 hoists, 8 winches and over 100,00 feet of wire rope and pendants were used for the erection of the High Line Cableway system.
The Colorado River Bridge is an engineering and construction marvel and is the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States.

2019.03.25 Hoover Dam
Today we drove from Las Vegas to see Hoover Dam. We left early in the morning, and I’m glad we did because it was not crowded there at all. We knew in advance that we would not be able to walk across the dam with the dogs. However, when we got there, we learned that dogs were not allowed in the large parking garage on the Nevada side of the damn. We had to drive across the dam to the Arizona side to an outdoor parking lot about 2 tenths of a mile from the Arizona side edge of the dam. Louie stayed with the dogs while I walked across the dam and got pictures.
The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge outside Boulder City, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States and includes the longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. Opened on October 19, 2010, the bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking the states of Nevada and Arizona 1,600 feet downstream from the Hoover Dam. The bridge is the highest in the nation, at 840 feet above the Colorado River.
Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed over a 5-year period in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. The dam created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the US by volume - when it is full. At the end of January, the lake was at 1,086 feet of surface elevation above sea level. If it drops to 1,050 feet, the lake can no longer generate hydroelectricity. At 895 feet, it can’t provide water. The lake overflowed into the spillway only once in its history – in 1983, and its level has steadily declined since 2000.

The Largest Concrete Dam in the US - The Hoover Dam (720p)
This engineering technology video depicts the United States built Hoover Dam. Its design was impressive, once known as Boulder Dam and designed in concrete, known in physics as a arch-gravity dam. Its located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It took 5 years to construct, between 1931 &1936 during the Great Depression, and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort of design, involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives at a financial building cost of $49 million ($836 million adjusted for inflation). It gets its common name from President Herbert Hoover who commissioned the United States Federal Government project.
The largest hydroelectric technology plant in the United States is at Grand Coulee Dam. Its three power plants have a capacity of 6,809 MW, and it generates, on average, about 21 billion KWh, while Hoover Dam's power plant has a capacity of 2,074 MW and generates approximately 4 billion KWh a year.
Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of designs and techniques were all but theory at the time.
Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume. The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The World's Biggest Arch Bridge - Hoover Dam Bridge
Before the construction of the 635 m bridge, better known as The Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, travellers on Route 93 between Arizona and Nevada crossed the Colorado River on the Hoover Dam itself, via a congested, two-lane road coupled with tight bends, high winds and poor visibility. With a rapid population growth and tourism, the result was massive traffic snarl-ups and other road hazards. The bridge rises 293 m over the Colorado River, making it the second-highest bridge in the U.S.A.
Construction began in 2005 and completed in October 2010, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Hoover Dam.
Two construction companies from California, the Obayashi Corporation from San Francisco and PSM Construction USA from Brisbane were involved in the construction of the bridge. Two 110 m towers suspended each end of the 833 m cableway, and a custom remote-controlled trolley system travelled on the 7.6 cm diameter cables to transport, hoist and position individual concrete bridge sections.
The bridge was the first concrete-steel arch composite bridge built in the United States, and its twin-ribbed arch is the widest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Forming a 353 m long, 92 m-deep arch, the two Archs are joined laterally by Vierendeel steel trusses that add seismic protection. Each Arch comprises more than 50 sections of concrete, each measuring 8 m. Eight concrete vertical pillars support the bridge deck above the arch structure, and a total of 36 steel girders weighing in at 45 metric tonnes support the whole structure.
The bridge measures a total of 635 m, making it the longest single-arch bridge in North America. A pedestrian walk on the north side provides tourists with the only way to see Hoover Dam from the bridge itself as well as an array of descriptive plaques about the project and its environment. Although various delays and a major equipment mishap added to the time delays, the project was within its $240 million budget.
The project was not without incidences. The bridge claimed the death of one worker during construction but suicides from pedestrians however continue to pose a growing concern to the bridge administration officials, who are evaluating design modifications to prevent future occurrences.
The Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge honors icons of public service selected by the states of Nevada and Arizona. Donal Neil “Mike” O’Callaghan was a decorated Korean War veteran who lost the partial use of a leg in the war. He was Nevada’s Governor for two terms between the year 1971-1979. He later took up a career in newspaper journalism. Patrick Daniel Tillman was a world renowned sportsman in American football, first at Arizona State University and later with the Arizona Cardinals. In the wake of the wake of the 9/11, he decided to join the U.S. army but unfortunately in 2004 was killed in Afghanistan at age 27.

Architects: Henry J. Kaiser · Gordon Kaufmann
From USA Today, Rita Kennedy, Phd:
Before the dam was built, the southwest had several areas where farming was impossible due to the lack of water. The Imperial Canal project, begun in 1900, took water from the Colorado south towards the Mexican border and showed that irrigation made settlement possible. By 1905, about 67,000 acres of land could be cultivated due to the canal's irrigation, allowing the towns of Calexico, Imperial and Mexicali to be established. In all, about 12,000 people lived on the irrigated land. Today, the dam irrigates more than one million acres in the United States and a further half million acres in Mexico, enabling those areas to produce fruit, cotton and grain.
Water Supply: The authorities also hoped the dam could provide a more reliable supply of water for towns and cities than had been possible before its construction. The resultant water enabled the development of Las Vegas and other planned communities in southern Nevada, including Green Valley and Summerlin. Today the dam provides water for communities in Nevada, California and Arizona, including Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego, supporting an estimated 18 million people.
Flood Control: Damming the Colorado removed the danger of flooding from the area below the dam. In the early years of the 20th century, flooding was a regular hazard for local farmers and flooding in the Imperial Valley between 1903 and 1907 led to extensive crop losses, disastrous for individual farmers and for the local community. With the dam in place, authorities could control the flow of the river downstream and prevent floods.
Hydroelectric Power: Hydroelectric power was not part of the original plan for the dam but between 1939 and 1949 a power plant was inserted into the structure. When it was installed, the plant was the largest of its kind in the world. The design features 17 turbines located at the base of the dam, generating more than 4 billion kilowatt hours annually.
Hoover Dam is made from 3.25 million tons of concrete and weighs more than 6.5 million tons.

Hoover Dam Walking Tour, Includes O'Callaghan/ Tillman Bridge 2019 4K
On this walking tour we visited the Hoover Dam. We weren’t able to continuously record as certain areas we closed but you will get a full sense of the exterior site. We also went to the O’Callaghan/ Tillman bridge, the massive overpass a few miles from the dam. If you thought the dam was high, (it’s 72+ stories) this bridge is a whole other level.
A drive to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is 45 minutes on average, offering lots of eye candy along the way. A nice stop along the way is Red Rock Canyon. Here you can drive the scenic loop or hope out at any of the several stops and go for a hike. It’s a full service park with restrooms and other amenities. Have a look at our video

I-11, US 93, US 95 North - Arizona State Line at Boulder City to Henderson Spaghetti Bowl/I-215
Welcome to the beginning of a long line of uploads. I got the chance to visit California and wasted no time planning a grand trip across the southwest. The first road that came to mind? I-11, the future Interstate that will finally link Las Vegas to Phoenix. Here we get our first look at the new highway, including the recently constructed Boulder City Bypass.
I-11 began as just a realignment of US 93 to bypass the old, narrow road that crossed the Hoover/Boulder Dam. With the Hoover Dam crossing considered inadequate as early as the 1960s, it took until the mid-1990s for plans to really start taking shape for the bypass with plans finalized in March of 2001. The construction of this bypass was accelerated after the September 11th, 2001 attacks as commercial traffic over the Hoover Dam was banned and had to be moved over to a detour that added 23 miles to drive between the metro areas. The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge opened to traffic in 2010 and is currently the 2nd highest bridge in the United States with the arch at 840ft and the roadway 900ft above the Colorado River.
The latest addition to the highway was the Boulder City Bypass. It opened in two stages: from modern Business US 93 on the western edge of Boulder City to US 95 in May 2018 and the segment from US 95 to the eastern end of Business US 93 which opened in August 2018. With the completion of the first portion, I-515 was deleted from the I-215/NV-564 Henderson Spaghetti Bowl interchange to the southern city limits of Henderson with new I-11 shields replacing the I-515 shields just days before I filmed the highway. Ultimately I-11 will replace all of I-515, with the renumbering already being approved by AASHTO and the FHWA.
