Caribou Lodge is located 15 air miles from Talkeetna, Alaska. We are 20 miles over land to the nearest highway, and just outside the Denali National Park boundary by less than 20 air miles.
Our family lives here year-round and hosts tourists during the summer months. Hiking in Alaska is so amazing, and something we enjoying doing as a job but even more so when we get to go out hiking with our family. Joe and Bonnie's little one loves being outside, and going out for picnics is one of Alyssa & Zac's girls favorite things to do.

Talkeetna Alaska
Talkeetna is the staging area for over 1,000 climbers who attempt to climb Denali each year. The local Roadhouse is a favorite among returning climbers. Located at the confluence of three major rivers, the town keeps its mining history alive with renovated miners' cabins used as lodging, shops and restaurants. The rivers also lend to a multitude of activities like guided river rafting, boat tours and sport fishing. Set on a ridge just above the town, the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge offers majestic views of Denali, the tallest peak in North America, assuming the weather cooperates. Denali and the Alaska Range are often hidden in clouds, as they were on May 30th when I visited.

-Today, at over a century's distance from the first ascent of Denali, but in the shadow of the mountain is the modern community of Talkeetna. K'dalkitnu 'food caching place' by its ancient Dena'ina. It is situated at the confluence of the Talkeetna, Susitna and Chulitna rivers., This town, set among beautiful birch, boasts of an eclectic array of visitor activites, historic sites, shops, and museum. Talkeetna is actually closer to the mountain than the official entrance to the National park named for it. If you want to add your name to the list of the 1000 plus peolle who attemot a climb of the mountain each year it is here at the Talkeetna Ranger Station that your climb must be registerd.
-Today's climbing route is significantly shorter than the original Stuck-Karstens expedition.
-Park ranger presentations on mountain climb routes and preparations occur twice a week at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.
The lodge is owned by Cook Inlet Regtional Incorporated, known as CIRI. CIRI is one of thirteen Alaska native regional corporations, and has a shareholder base of more than 8,000 alaska native people. In effect the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge is the hosting of visitors by the fist peole of this land.

Clear day in April 2015 driving to Talkeetna. Mountain is about 2 hours away and can be seen from this far. Only full mountain can be seen on clear days because so high. Usually reaches through the clouds. On a good day can be seen from anchorage which is 4 hours away.

A&Z #737 - Atlas vs the Seward's Folly Alaskan Caribou Burger Challenge at West Rib Pub & Grill in Talkeetna, Alaska. On June 5, 2019, I began my 2019 Summer Adventures and stop #2 was the state of Alaska!! I attempted 6 delicious food challenges in the Alaskan cities of Homer, Soldotna, Talkeetna, and Anchorage. For challenge #3, we traveled north from Soldotna up to Talkeetna, Alaska where I attempted the Seward's Folly Alaskan Caribou Burger Challenge with fries at West Rib Pub & Grill. This restaurant was featured on Man v. Food: Anchorage, Alaska many years ago and this was my first time eating caribou meat as part of a food challenge. BIG thanks to the West Rib Pub & Grill staff for the hospitality, and to all the people who came up to watch and meet us that night. West Rib Pub's Seward's Folly Alaskan Caribou Burger Challenge ($56):
There are two 1lb caribou meat burger patties stacked and layered with 1lb deli-meat ham slices, 1/2lb bacon, two cheeses, some healthy vegetables, and lots of their delicious Fat Sauce (w/ mayonnaise and sour cream). The burger is served with 1.5lbs of battered fries and there is a 1 hour time limit to finish everything. Winners still must pay for the meal, but they win a sweet t-shirt and spot on the Wall of Fame.
