Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
Petrified Forest National Park has the largest collection of fossilized trees in the world. 225 million years ago the trees, Araucarioxylon, Woodworthia, Schilderia, and others, fell into streams and washed into floodplains and mixed with silt, mud, and volcanic ash. Silica-laden groundwater seeped through the logs and replaced the wood tissue with silica. The silica crystallized into quartz, preserving the wood. Remnants of early human occupation of the area dating back to 1250 A.D. are found at Puerco Pueblo. The 100 room pueblo sheltered over 1,000 people. More recently, the Painted Desert Inn, built by Herbert David Lore around 1920, was used as the first overnight lodge in the area. The décor and architecture of the Painted Desert Inn reflects the awesome vistas of the surrounding beauty of the Painted Desert. The nearby trail head will lead you to a unique wilderness camping environment. Music copyright 2007 by Maury Smith. Slideshow by John Wanserski.

Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park - Arizona
Arizona, during the Triassic Period 225 million years ago, was once a tropical landscape. As trees died/were knocked down, they soaked up groundwater and silica from volcanic ash and over time crystallized into quartz. Different minerals created the rainbow effects in the petrified wood. Red, yellow, orange, tan, pink, purple are iron at the ferric state. White is natural quartz. Blue is iron/copper in the ferrous state. Black and gray are carbon/manganese. Green is copper, chromium or iron in ferrous state.
We also visited the Painted Desert inn that had spectacular views of the Painted Desert. Pictures don’t do it justice as seeing it in person.

Hiking Onyx Bridge, Petrified Forest, Arizona
Hiking from the Painted Desert Inn to Onyx Bridge in the Black Forest section of the Petrified Forest Wilderness of Apache County, AZ. The petrified wood is not as colorful as First Forest Point ( ) or Jasper Forest Road ( ), but the logs are much longer. If no longer whole, still contiguous. An NPS Off the Beaten Path hike.

Unlike our normal videos, we really wanted to share the beauty of this park so we included some pano of each of the sites we stop at.
We also kept this video in real time, so its a bit longer than our standard videos. There is a soundtrack to this video, but it's very soft, so don't be alarmed if you don't hear anything right away.

This was a wonderful park to visit. It would have been a perfect day if not for all the aging self-absorbed bikers and mobile home jerk-offs tearing up the serenity with their disgusting noise.
Make sure you have water with you, but especially if you are hiking. Hot and dry here.
You'll need a day just to hit all the pull-offs along the park road. Budget a second day if you plan to do much hiking.
You can find tons of petrified wood for sale in the area surrounding the park. Don't feel like you have to get it at the park at a much higher price.
