Parc du Cinquantenaire (French for Park of the Fiftieth Anniversary, pronounced [paʁk dy sɛ̃kɑ̃tnɛʁ]) or Jubelpark (Dutch for Jubilee Park, pronounced [ˈjybəlpɑrk]) is a large public, urban park (30 hectares) in the easternmost part of the European Quarter in Brussels, Belgium.
Most buildings of the U-shaped complex which dominate the park were commissioned by the Belgian government under the patronage of King Leopold II for the 1880 National Exhibition commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian independence. During successive exhibitions in the same area, more structures were added. The centrepiece triumphal arch was erected in 1905 replacing a previous temporary version of the arcade by Gédéon Bordiau. The structures were built in iron, glass and stone, symbolising the economic and industrial performance of Belgium. The surrounding 30-hectare park esplanade was full of picturesque gardens, ponds and waterfalls. It housed several trade fairs, exhibitions and festivals at the beginning of the century. In 1930 the government decided to reserve Cinquantenaire for use as a leisure park.

The Royal Military Museum has been the sole tenant of the northern half of the complex since 1880. The southern half is occupied by the Cinquantenaire Museum and the AutoWorld Museum. The Temple of Human Passions, a remainder from 1886, and the Great Mosque of Brussels from 1978 are located in the north-western corner of the park.
Line 1 of the Brussels Metro and the Belliard Tunnel from Rue de la Loi pass underneath the park, the latter partly in an open section in front of the Arch. The nearest metro stations are Schuman to the west of the park, and Mérode immediately to the east.
Today the various buildings of the Cinquantenaire host three musea and one mosque. The surrounding park esplanade is used for several purposes in the summer, such as military parades and drive-in movies. It is also the starting point for the 20 km of Brussels, an annual run with 30,000 participants.

In 1930 the government decided to reserve Cinquantenaire for use as a leisure park.
Originally this area was part of the military exercise ground outside of the center of the city, the so-called Linthout plains. For the world exhibition of 1880, the plain was developed as an exhibition center. The original pavilions of the 1880 exhibition, designed by Gédéon Bordiau, were largely replaced with the triumphal arcade designed by Charles Girault in 1904 and the large halls on both sides. Only the glass-constructed Bordiau halls remain from the 1880 structures.
The Arch was planned for the world exhibition of 1880 and was meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Belgium. In 1880, only the bases of the columns were completed and, during the exhibition, the rest of the arch was constructed from wooden panels. During the following years, the completion of the monument was the topic of a continuous battle between King Leopold II and the Belgian government, which did not want to spend the money required to complete it.
The park was also the site of the Brussels International (1897), for which the building wings were extended, although the arch was still incomplete.
The original architect was the Belgian Gideon Bordiau, who spent close to 20 years on the project and died in 1904. His successor, chosen by Leopold, was the French architect Charles Girault. Girault changed the design from a single arch to a tri-parte arch, and began a course of round-the-clock construction in a final push to complete it. The sculptors included:
- the quadriga, entitled Brabant Raising the National Flag, by Jules Lagae and Thomas Vincotte
- figures of Hainaut and Limbourg by Albert Desenfans
- figures of Antwerp and Liège by Charles van der Stappen
- figures of East Flanders and West Flanders by Jef Lambeaux
- figures of Namur and Luxembourg by Guillaume de Groot
The monument was completed with private funding in 1905, just in time for the 75th anniversary of the Belgian independence.

Parc du cinquantenaire brussels
Brussels - Parc du Cinquantenaire
The Parc du Cinquantenaire or Jubelpark is not only a park but a national landmark in Brussels. The name means “Park of the fiftieth anniversary”. It was built during the reign of Leopold II to commemorate fifty years of Belgian independence. Symbolically, the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels is also built in the shape of a pentagon, like the inner and outer rings of the city. Cinquantenaire sits just outside the inner close to the European Quarter. At the south eastern point, a giant arch with two arms extending out to house museums rests behind a fountain marking the grand entrance.
The two arms of the arch are home to three museums in Brussels: in the left arm is Autoworld, a museum dedicated to cars which showcases the evolution of cars throughout modern times; the one on the right has an art museum and an army museum.
Visitors can climb to the top of the arch for free from an entrance in the army museum to see a nice view of Brussels and then European Quarter. On a clear day, you will be able to see far and wide.
Most visitors will stop at the fountain, take a photo of the arch and move onto other sites. But if you have some time to walk through the park you realise this is one of the most beautiful parks in Brussels. There are many tranquil places to rest and play, have a picnic, go for a jog or spend time on the benches reading. On a hot summer’s day, the areas within the park will be filled with sunbathers, thirsty for every drop of sun-ray.
What locals know is that the entire area is populated with international people working among European institutions and large corporations, which have offices in Brussels. In order to keep everyone entertained throughout the year this Brussels’ park plays host to an endless number of events such as concerts, club nights, festivals, drive-through-cinemas, environmental days, aperitifs, and even the starting line to Brussels marathons.
You can reach the front of the Parc du Cinquantenaire from the metro named “Merode” or the back of the park from “Schuman”. At the Schuman round-about you will be able to see the park in relation to the grand boulevards and the European Quarters where the buildings were built to house all the offices of the European Commission and the European parliament. Parc du Cinquantenaire was built during Léopold II's reign. It's best known for its cluster of museums – art, history, military and motor vehicles – which house an incredible 350,000 artefacts from all continents. We love the fine jewellery and cult-of-the-dead funerary gifts from the Merovingian civilisation. There is also the massive Arcade du Cinquantenaire, a triumphal arch built in 1880 to celebrate 50 years of Belgian independence. In summer, this area is put to good use with a popular drive-in cinema. The Royal Art and History Museums in the southern wing of the Cinquantenaire buildings are chock-a-block with antiquities from all over the world.
Autoworld, in the northern building, has a huge collection of vintage cars, both local and international. With over 400 vehicles on display, it's one of the biggest such ensembles in Europe.

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - Travel Vlog Day 2 - Atomium Light Show & Parc du Cinquantenaire
Planning a weekend trip to Brussels, Belgium? Join us in this travel vlog to see some of our favorite things to do and things to see in Brussels. We visited some of this city's top tourist spots, including the Atomium and Parc du Cinquantenaire. We loved the Atomium light show and got some great recordings of the music and sound track, which we hope you enjoy! Our ticket to the Atomium also got us into the ADAM Brussels Design Museum, which we recommend you visit. We also spotted Brussel's notorious parakeet colony in Parc du Cinquantenaire - those green birds really don't seem to fit in in the cold European climate! On our last evening, we enjoyed a street performance in the city center of Brussels next to the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, and checked out some Belgian chocolate shops. Check out this travel vlog for our guide to exploring Brussels in a couple of days.
