Brussels, European Quarter - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
In the European Quarter of Brussels, the capital of Europe, you find the seat of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the second seat of the European Parliament, beside Strasbourg.
It is Saturday, no working day for the parliamentarians, but we want to see the place where a significant influence on our everyday life is exerted.
We go by subway up to the stop Trone and approach the European Quarter in the west of Brussels. Even from a distance you can guess the dimensions of this building complex. The widely curved building connections over our heads convey the feeling to be an ant. The further we explore the terrain, the stronger the feeling.
The mirrored facades make it impossible to look into the interior. Cameras, scanners and identity checks on all entrances do not give the feeling of being welcome. The only part that is open on Saturdays is the Parlamentarium, the EU visitors' center with multimedia components in all 24 official European languages. Our standard camera was unwelcome, fortunately, we still had a slightly smaller one with us.
Slightly northeast of the parliament, we reach the European Commission and the Council of Europe. The gigantic office complexes which do not fit in a grown city like Brussels and convey the feeling of Orwell's 1985.
We left the place with the feeling that we met an institution, which hides together with its lobby organizations behind its sealed windows while it is engaged in watching and supervising its citizens.
Hopefully, the two electric cars at their charging station are not only a fig leaf of the EU, but a sign that the EU really does something for the climate protection.

Im Europaviertel von Brüssel, der Hauptstadt Europas, sind der Sitz des Europarates, der Europäischen Kommission und der 2. Sitz des Europäischen Parlaments, neben Straßburg, untergebracht.
Es ist Samstag, eigentlich kein Tag an dem Parlamentarier arbeiten, dennoch wollen wir uns ansehen, von wo aus so viel Einfluss auf unser tägliches Leben ausgeübt wird.
Wir fahren mit der U-Bahn bis zur Haltestelle Trone und nähern uns dem im Westen von Brüssel gelegenen Gelände. Schon von Weitem lassen sich die Dimensionen dieses Gebäudekomplexes erahnen. Die weit geschwungenen Gebäudeverbindungen über unseren Köpfen vermitteln das Gefühl eine Ameise zu sein. Je weiter wir das Gelände erkunden, desto stärker wird das Gefühl.
Die verspiegelten Fassaden machen es unmöglich einen Blick ins innere zu werfen. Kameras, Scanner und Personenkontrollen an allen Eingängen erwecken nicht das Gefühl willkommen zu sein. Das Einzige was samstags geöffnet ist, ist das Parlamentarium, ein Multi-Media-Museum über oder für die europäischen Institutionen und Parlamentarier. Unsere normale Kamera war hier unerwünscht, Glücklicherweise hatten wir noch einen etwas kleiner geratenen Ersatz dabei.
Nach dem Parlament erreichen wir etwas nordöstlich die Europäische Kommission und den Europarat. Auch hier vermitteln die riesigen Bürokomplexe, die so gar nicht in eine gewachsene Stadt wie Brüssel passen, das Gefühl von Orwells 1985.
Wir gehen nach Hause mit dem Gefühl einer Institution begegnet zu sein, die sich zusammen mit ihren Lobby-Organisationen hinter ihren verspiegelten Fenstern versteckt, während sie damit beschäftigt ist, ihre Bürger zu beobachten und zu überwachen.
Hoffentlich sind die beiden E-Autos an ihrer Ladestation nicht nur ein Feigenblatt der EU, sondern ein Zeichen dafür, dass die EU wirklich etwas für den Klimaschutz tut.
