Escalante Slot Canyons 4K : Part 1 | Peek-a-boo Gulch
#grandstaircaseescalantehikes #peekaboogulch #slotcanyon
The Peek-a-boo/Spooky Gulch slot canyon loop trail used to be one of those little-known treasures hidden in the canyons of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Utah.
But as the beauty of slot canyon exploration has become more popular, so have these slot canyons. Peek-a-boo is unique in that the slot itself is home to numerous arches which either tower above you or present a fun and unique obstacle to navigate.
Peek-a-boo is both stunningly beautiful and truly unique. Peek-a-boo and Spooky gulches were both removed from national monument protections in late 2017, but to mar or deface the canyons in any way is still illegal, not to mention foolish.
If you visit, please take extra care. Leave No Trace and make sure to obtain a map of the route from the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center, carry ample water and stay safe.
WARNING: Hiking in extreme heat or during stormy conditions strongly discouraged.
Trailhead: Dry Fork
Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous (depending on weather)
Distance: 3.6-Miles
Elevation gain: ~ 450ft decent

Fall Break - Escalante, Utah
This past October, while my kids had their fall break from school, I took the family down for a night of camping and adventuring around Escalante, Utah. Features of the trip included Upper Calf Creek, Devils Garden, dinosaur tracks, Petrified Forest State Park, and Anasazi State Park.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons Escalante, Utah.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.

Escalante 2, Backpacking Utah, Hiking Coyote Gulch, Climbing scary Jacob Hamblin Arch with My Own Frontier, A Canyon Country High Route, The Scary and dangerous Stuff in 4K
This is the second of two videos from an 8 day backpacking and canyoneering loop in the Escalante area October 2019. Me and my buddy Joey Coconato of My Own Frontier complete Steve Allens Escalante South route over a period of 8 very dry days, there has been no rain in the area for over 100 days. We follow the challenging route from Crack in the Wall, through Coyote Gulch, crossing the Escalante River, heading up Stevens Canyon and up the Baker trail to the top of the Waterpocket Fold. From there we head to Cliff Point for some amazing 360 views of Canyon Country, we could see Monument valley and Navajo Mountain in the south, Boulder Mountain and Powell Point to the north, Henry Mountains, Bears Ears, Lake Powell and even the La Sal Mountains to the east. This second video starts with a beautiful but windy sunrise at Cliff Point, and then we get into The Scary Stuff, canyon hopping, climbing and traversing part of the trip from Cliff to Georges Camp Canyon, down the very scary bighorn sheep trails and across the Escalante to Ezra Mc Bench, Fools Canyon, Kings Bench and back to Coyote Gulch for the climb out by Jacob Hamblin Arch and the end of the trip. We found water, but did we fall off a cliff on the bighorn sheep trail, any of the class 4 and 5 climbs, or up the Jacob Hamblin Arch?

Lower Calf Creek Falls - Scenic Byway 12 - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.39
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 39th episode, we hit the road again. Lucky LeAw, our old vintage 1990 Ford F-250 4x4 truck camper, is fixed.
We visit Calf Creek Falls and drive all Scenic Byway 12 Route. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Calf Creek Falls is a perennial waterfall in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah that totals 214 feet (65 m). The lower tier is a 126-foot (38 m) cascade and is very popular, because it can be reached by an easy hike on a 5½ mile roundtrip trail. The upper tier is a 88-foot (27 m) plunge and is much less known, as it requires a 1-mile (1.6 km) scramble past the lower falls.
Named for its use as a natural pen for calves back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the creek remained relatively unknown as a tourist destination until the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, under the Clinton administration. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites en route to the paradisiacal pools.
The trailhead is located at the Calf Creek Campground on Highway 12, 11 miles south of the town of Boulder, and 15 miles east of the town of Escalante. The highway follows the route of the creek for most of the distance, atop the bluff to the east of the canyon.
Calf Creek Campground: Located at the campground in the Calf Creek Recreational Area, there is a parking fee for the parking lot, and a camping fee in order to stay overnight. The trail sets off to the north, away from the campground. Though mostly level, the trail frequently crosses vast sandy tracts that can make it difficult for some to navigate. About a mile and a half up the canyon, on the east wall quite high up rest two Fremont granaries and a group of pictograph panels, dated to approximately AD 1200.
State Route 12 or Scenic Byway 12 (SR-12), also known as Highway 12 — A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, is a state highway designated an All-American Road located in Garfield County and Wayne County, Utah, United States.
Proceeding west to east for 122 miles (nearly 200 km), the highway starts south of Panguitch at an intersection with US-89, crosses part of Dixie National Forest and Bryce Canyon National Park, continues through the small towns of Tropic, Cannonville, and Henrieville. It crosses various parts of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GS-ENM), continues northeast through Escalante and over the Escalante River, then north through more of GS-ENM, Boulder, the Aquarius Plateau, Grover, ending in Torrey at an intersection with SR-24, five miles (8 km) west of Capitol Reef National Park. The 30-mile (48 km) long portion of the highway that ascends and descends Boulder Mountain on the Aquarius Plateau is known as Boulder Mountain Highway.

Coyote Gulch As a Day Hike - Southern Utah Adventure - Glen Canyon, Utah
We had an epic day hike through Crack in the Wall down to Coyote Gulch in Glen Canyon, Utah. The 16 miles round trip were beautiful but tiring. I would recommend camping in the gulch and spending more time to enjoy the natural beauty of Glen Canyon. We didn't see any coyotes in the gulch, but I did hear some later that night at our campsite up near the trailhead.

Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating stuff. So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It's all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

Peekaboo Canyon - Kanab, Utah (FREE Alternative to Antelope Canyon)
Todd Hata and I continue our Utah adventures with a slot canyon that's just north of Kanab. To get to it you need to either drive with a 4x4 or hike 3 miles in the sand. Peekaboo Canyon is free to go to and looks amazing. A great alternative to Antelope Canyon which is 90 miles away. The best part was that we had it all to ourselves. Add Peekaboo Canyon to your list when you go to Utah.
Note that this is NOT the Peekaboo Canyon near the town of Escalante.

Grand Staircase-Escalante
The most beautiful monument in The US
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a U.S. National Monument protecting 1,880,461 acres (760,996 ha)[1] of land in southern Utah.
There are three main regions: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Canyons of the Escalante - all of which are administered by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the National Landscape Conservation System. President Bill Clinton designated the area as a national monument in 1996 using his authority under the Antiquities Act. Grand Staircase-Escalante encompasses the largest land area of all U.S. National Monuments.

The Monument stretches from the towns of Big Water, Glendale and Kanab, Utah on the southwest, to the towns of Escalante and Boulder on the northeast. Encompassing 1.9 million acres, the Monument is slightly larger in area than the state of Delaware.
The western part of the Monument is dominated by the Paunsaugunt Plateau and the Paria River, and is adjacent to Bryce Canyon National Park. This section shows the geologic progression of the Grand Staircase. Features include the slot canyons of Bull Valley Gorge, Willis Creek, and Lick Wash which are accessed from Skutumpah Road.
Road to Understanding: Escalante
We continue on the #RoadtoUnderstanding in Escalante. It's a small town with less than 1,000 residents -- but tens of thousands of people pass through there every year.
