Potash Road - Moab, UT
This is an adventuresome extension to the paved Potash Road Scenic Byway (Highway 279) that originates in Moab. There are many natural and unnatural scenic personalities that present themselves as you travel this road. From the deep and intricate canyons on the western end to hoodoos and the Colorado River in the middle section, followed by an alien post-apocalyptic landscape of the potash mines on the eastern end. This great offroad trail combined with the Schafer Trail for a beginner level excursion into canyon country.

Most Dangerous Road in the United States - Shafer Trail to Potash Road
The Shafer Trail in Moab, Utah is regarded as one of the most dangerous roads in America. A road that humbles the wildest of egos. This is a Jeep/4x4 trail that permits access to highway legal vehicles who dare to venture. There are more dangerous roads in America when it comes to ATV/UTV/Jeep trails, but as far as street legal vehicles are concerned, this puppy takes the cake.
I would not attempt this trail in a sedan or low clearance vehicle. Numerous areas on Potash Road are full of sharp rock, and clearance of about 8-9 is needed. You will absolutely bottom out if you take a sedan down this road.
We did this in our AWD Escalade - never slipped once. I do believe this can be done with 2WD - no problem at all.
Best visited 2-hours before sunset. Be sure to give yourself a bit of time to get out of the canyon before the sun sets completely. The route out is fairly straightforward, but one could easily take a wrong turn and end up on the wrong trail.
