Relaxing In Nature - Kern River & Lake Success
The Kern River, originally Rio de San Felipe, later La Porciuncula, is a river in the U.S. state of California, approximately 165 miles (270 km) long. It drains an area of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains northeast of Bakersfield. Fed by snowmelt near Mount Whitney, the river passes through scenic canyons in the mountains and is a popular destination for whitewater rafting and kayaking. It is the only major river in the Sierra Nevada mountain range that drains in a southerly direction.
The Kern River formerly emptied into the now dry Buena Vista Lake and Kern Lake via the Kern River Slough, and Kern Lake in turn emptied into Buena Vista Lake via the Connecting Slough at the southern end of the Central Valley. Buena Vista Lake, when overflowing, first backed up into Kern Lake and then upon rising higher drained into Tulare Lake via Buena Vista Slough and a changing series of sloughs of the Kern River. The lakes were part of a partially endorheic basin that sometimes overflowed into the San Joaquin River.[6] This basin also included the Kaweah and Tule Rivers, as well as southern distributaries of the Kings that all flowed into Tulare Lake.
Since the late 19th century the Kern has been almost entirely diverted for irrigation, recharging aquifers and the California Aqueduct, although some water empties into Lake Webb and Lake Evans, two small lakes in a portion of the former Buena Vista Lakebed. The lakes were created in 1973 for recreational use. The lakes hold 6,800 acre⋅ft (8,400 dam3) combined.[7] Crops are grown in the rest of the former lakebed. In extremely wet years the river will reach the Tulare Lake basin through a series of sloughs and flood channels.
Despite its remote source, nearly all of the river is publicly accessible. The Kern River is particularly popular for wilderness hiking and whitewater rafting. The Upper Kern River is paralleled by trails to within a half-mile of its source (which lies at 13,600 feet (4,100 m)). Even with the presence of Lake Isabella, the river is perennial down to the lower Tulare Basin. Its swift flow at low elevation makes the river below the reservoir an extremely popular location for rafting.

Rafting in California
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel, ( Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate went rafting in Northern California with Six Rivers Rafting Company ( along the Trinity River. Six Rivers is a young rafting company that was started by friends who's goal is to provide the highest quality rafting experience that caters to you, the rafter. Rafting is a great family adventure that requires teamwork and is tons of fun. We liked that Six Rivers is a small company that takes out small groups and individualizes each rafting trip. Along with shooting the rapids like Surprise and Hell's Hole, we enjoyed a short hike to a waterfall, jumping off rocks into deep swimming holes, floating down the river, seeing Osprey and other river wildlife, and learning to trust each other.
Six Rivers Rafting offers river trips from class I river floats to Class V wild rides along the Trinity and Klamath Rivers. They are a green company that participates in the no-plastic-on-the-river policy and serves local, organic food. You can do a half-day, full day or multi-day rafting trip through the beautiful forests of Northern California. Cheap Family Travel totally recommends whitewater rafting as a great family adventure. Also, don't forget to pick up your whitewater rafting trip photos from Serendipity Snapshots after you ride the rapids.

I dare you swim here!! (River & Campground) The Kern River, originally Rio de San Felipe
Kernville is a census-designated place in the southern Sierra Nevada, in Kern County, California, United States. Kernville is located 42 miles northeast of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 2,667 feet. The population was 1,395 at the 2010 census, down from 1,736 at the 2000 census. The Kern River was named after artist and topographer Edward Kern, who accompanied John C. Fremont on his 1845 expedition. They camped at what was a fork of two rivers, now the middle of Lake Isabella. An 1858 gold rush led to the formation of a town briefly called Rogersville, then Williamsburg, which was in 1863 renamed Whiskey Flat after a bar opened. In 1864, the town was renamed Kernville.
After decades of planning, the Isabella Dam project began in 1948. As a result, Kernville was relocated upstream to its present location at the tip of the northeast fork of the man-made lake, along with certain historic buildings. Downtown visibly retains Kernville's gold rush and Old West roots, attracting tourists along with the area's natural scenery and outdoor activities. The town's original location is slightly east of Wofford Heights. Foundations and other remnants can still be seen when the lake is low. The famous Mountain Inn, built mainly to house movie stars and crew before the 1948 move, is now (partially) at the new Kernville, renamed the River View Lodge.
Whiskey Flat Days is the annual celebration of the area's Wild West roots. A parade, historical re-enactments, pioneer-style camps, a carnival, street vendors and rodeo are just part of the festivities put on every President's Day weekend and attended by thousands of visitors.
Even with its annual summer influx of tourists, Kernville remains one of the most quaint, conservative relics of early California. Many local families trace their lineage to original 19th century homesteaders. The post office, established at the original site in 1868, was moved to the new site in 1951.

Slab Creek 1600 CFS - Part 2
Fall of 2017 was an amazing time in central California. The licence renewal on Slab Creek Dam created a unique situation where we experienced reliable flows while SMUD was beginning construction of a new powerhouse and release valve to accommodate recreational flows in the Slab Creek Section of the South Fork of the American River. During the releases a storm kicked up the flow to 1600 CFS creating some pretty juicy conditions for a raft. If you haven't seen Part 1 check it out here:
Part 2 features the next 3 major rapids, Spilled Popcorn, Eddy the Eagle, and Intermission.
For this trip we opted to run a 12' Sotar Custom Boat named Cuthbert designed by team boater Daniel Jenkins. This boat was a little small, but she handled the river pretty well given the higher water conditions. For more info on some of the awesome rafts featured in this run check out
Winter expeditions require a lot of gear and our friends at watershed dry bags were awesome to have along for the trip. Everything from first aid gear to clothes made it down to takeout for a warm and dry hike out at the end.

The beautiful scenery of Kern County and the water flowing gracefully down Kern River attract people from near and far. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are not easy. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This stretch of Kern River in Kern County is 7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The Lake Isabella to Sandy Flat section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. Whitewater paddling here in the Southern Sierra Nevada is a great experience. Thestarting point is not too far from Bakersfield, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The campgrounds here at Kern River are pretty good. There aren?t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don?t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places.
