Sheldon Air Service
Offering flightseeing and air taxi services, Sheldon Air Service is family owned and operated by David Lee and Holly Sheldon Lee in Talkeetna, Alaska. Our family has been flying Alaskans to glaciers since 1932. David has been flying mountain climbers, visitors, homesteaders and adventurists from Talkeetna for 33 years.
With over 12,000 hours of flight time throughout the Alaska Range in Denali National Park, David is one of the most experienced off-airport pilots who specialize in glacier landings. Sheldon Air offers a modern air service while preserving the personal touch of a family-run business.

The Sheldon Chalet is a dramatic structure perched high on a rocky outcropping above the Ruth Glacier in the middle of the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, surrounded by mountains including Denali.
Denali National Park Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna
If you’re thinking of coming to Alaska to soak up its boundless beauty, then one stop on your journey is likely to be Denali National Park and Preserve. The undisputed gem of the park is Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley). The Koyukon people who inhabit the area around the mountain have referred to this peak as Denali for several centuries. This famous mountain has the highest peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. We were lucky enough to get a clear view of the top of Denali, which I reveal towards the end of the video.
For our tour we used Sheldon Air Service, which we found was more budget friendly than the other Denali flight tour providers in Talkeetna. Although the plane was manufactured in 1951, it had been mechanically updated and was just fine to give us amazing views of Alaska’s dramatic landscape and rugged wilderness. If you have a little extra time and money to do a flightseeing tour around Denali National Park, then you must do it! It may be the highlight of your trip.

Alaska: Flight Tour around Denali, The Great One
We were originally scheduled to land a ski plane on Ruth Glacier Amphitheatre, near Denali, but due to cloud cover, we had to adjust our tour to a flight weaving near The Great One (Denali), its surrounding peaks, and over their glaciers, instead, in a Piper Navajo Chieftain. It was, nevertheless, ...indescribable.

Alaska has more than 40% of the nation’s surface water resources including over 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes greater than 5 acres and numerous creeks and ponds.
...that's just the ones over 5 acres in size. Most of the lakes are unnamed, we were told.
Alaska has over 33,000 miles of coastline. It is the only state to have coastlines on two different oceans: Arctic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

The Hurricane, or Hurricane Turn, is a passenger train operated by the Alaska Railroad between Talkeetna and Hurricane Gulch in Alaska. This train is unique in that rather than making scheduled station stops, it is a flag stop train meaning that passengers between Talkeetna and Hurricane can wave a white cloth anywhere along the route and the train will stop to pick them up. ...The Hurricane Turn is one of the last true flagstop trains in the United States.

I'm old and I'm bold; I'm also hairless and fearless, and I'm mean and ugly! Maybe all that constitutes a bush pilot.
Rhode's Alaska Minute 6: On top of the Ruth Glacier near Denali
This was taken on a glacier landing on the Ruth Glacier in the Alaska range near Denali (aka Mt. McKinley) during a flightseeing tour taken with Talkeetna Air Taxi. Unfortunately, I had taken so much footage at this point, that the minute got cut off!
Alaska Feeling: Glacier Landings in Talkeetna Mountains
En-route over wild Talkeetna Mountains in a ski plane Piper PA 20 to land on the Swiftsure Glacier. This is how Alaska looks like: no people, no roads or houses en-route.
This videoclip illustrates the first attempts to land on the glacier, before final full stop landing. The presented technique, originally from Don Lee, is quite different from typical glacier landing technique utilized in the Swiss or French Alps. The first attempt will be made downhill to check the surface and with enough energy for escape, if something goes wrong.

Talkeetna Love-Lee Cabins - Premier Talkeetna Lodging
- Talkeetna Love-Lee Cabins (TLC) is the premier lodging destination in Talkeetna, Alaska. We opened our doors in 2015 and satisfied many customers in our first year. We learned years ago while working for Big-Box tour companies that people don’t always get the star treatment they deserve as individuals. Often they are treated as a small piece of a very large group. Getting “processed” down a tourism assembly line isn’t what we believe that people save up for all of their lives to experience on the trip of a lifetime. We believe that you take the trip of a lifetime to gather experiences you’ll never want to forget for the rest of your life. That is what we want to help you achieve here at TLC.
We have given careful thought to selecting high-end plumbing fixtures and jetted tubs (with furnished bath salts), comfortable hotel-quality beds and linens, furnished kitchens, wifi, and satellite television on large HD flat screen TV's. That’s what our cabins are about.
As far as service is concerned, we offer a BBQ grill station and campfire area where guests can gather around on a nice evening and have a great visit and mingle with other guests. We offer the ability to book many of the local tours right from TLC so you don’t have to run around trying to find out what’s available.
We also love to offer suggestions on all of the little-known things to see and do that most visitors really don’t get a chance to experience because they’re busy trying to fill their time finding a scheduled time to get “slotted into” somewhere.
Beautiful Downtown Talkeetna is located at Mile 14 at the end of the Talkeetna Spur Road. We are Mile 11.7, which is 2.3 miles before you get Downtown right on the Talkeetna Spur Road and the corner of Love-Lee Lane. There is a paved bike path that runs the entire length of the Spur Road, right next to our property. In addition, we are located centrally to many great walking-distance activities, such as many x-country ski trails, X-Y Lakes, Christiansen Lake, Denali and Alaska Range Lookout, Flying Squirrel Bakery & Café, Talkeetna Alaska Lodge Dining Room, and much more. Local taxi and shuttle services run 24-7 to keep you moving to where you need to be, especially for a fun day Downtown looking at all the fantastic eclectic and interesting shops, bars & restaurants. There is certainly lots to do and see on any day, in any conditions.
Talkeetna is the Native Athabascan word meaning “where three rivers meet”. We sit at the confluence of the Talkeetna, Chulitna and Little Susitna Rivers which make up the Big Susitna River which moves the third largest volume of water in North America.
Things to Do in Talkeetna:
Flight Seeing – Explore the top of North America with a flight seeing tour from one of our several flight seeing operators located 2 miles from our property.
Canopy Zip Line – Yes, even a small place like Talkeetna has some amazing zip-line activities through beautiful country. 3 Hour Tour.
Riverboat Adventures – Take a jet boat ride with all your friends up the river in these high-performance tour boats. Many different sightseeing and adventure options available.
Fishing – Always wanted to go out with a real Alaskan fishing guide? We have many different guides and vendors to choose from.
Arts – We have Art galleries, Wildlife art galleries, Denali Arts Council who can satiate your need to view, appreciate or collect locally produced art. There is also a live stage theater with many productions happening throughout the year.
Live music – Whether at the Denali Fairview Inn, Denali Arts Sheldon Hangar, or one of the local eateries, Talkeetna is a town bursting at the seams with world class and sometimes not-so-world-class music. If you like live music, Talkeetna has it.
ATV tours – Take a ride through the trails or out to the Petersville area with one of our local ATV guide services.
Much, much more! Plus if you are heading to Denali from here, we have lots of tips and suggestions to keep you busy and preoccupied during that part of your trip too!
We urge you to give Talkeetna Love-Lee Cabins a try this year and we look forward to hosting you soon on your trip.
