Escalante Slot Canyons 4K : Part 1 | Peek-a-boo Gulch
#grandstaircaseescalantehikes #peekaboogulch #slotcanyon
The Peek-a-boo/Spooky Gulch slot canyon loop trail used to be one of those little-known treasures hidden in the canyons of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Utah.
But as the beauty of slot canyon exploration has become more popular, so have these slot canyons. Peek-a-boo is unique in that the slot itself is home to numerous arches which either tower above you or present a fun and unique obstacle to navigate.
Peek-a-boo is both stunningly beautiful and truly unique. Peek-a-boo and Spooky gulches were both removed from national monument protections in late 2017, but to mar or deface the canyons in any way is still illegal, not to mention foolish.
If you visit, please take extra care. Leave No Trace and make sure to obtain a map of the route from the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center, carry ample water and stay safe.
WARNING: Hiking in extreme heat or during stormy conditions strongly discouraged.
Trailhead: Dry Fork
Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous (depending on weather)
Distance: 3.6-Miles
Elevation gain: ~ 450ft decent

Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons Escalante, Utah.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.

Driving the Burr Trail Road to Notom - Grand Staircase Escalante NM and Capitol Reef NP
In this video I drive from Boulder, UT, along the Scenic Hwy 12, down the Burr Trail Road to the Burr Trail Switchbacks, then down to the Notom-Bullfrog Road, and head north to Notom on the eastern side of Capitol Reef National Park.
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is one of the most beautiful places in Utah, but much of it is being threatened by mining and oil rigs, which breaks my heart. Once a place is protected, it should stay protected. I hope you will joing me in protecting this incredible land.

Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating stuff. So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It's all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

Spooky Slot Canyon Hiking Trail - Grand Staircase-Escalante
Spooky Gulch is a beautiful Slot Canyon located at Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The access takes some effort but it's definitely worth the trip. The trailhead is located 32 miles south of the town of Escalante and the drive to the trailhead is not for the faint of souls as one has to drive 26 miles on a very uneven gravel/dirt road with some washed-out patches and bumps.
Once at the trailhead, it's another adventure to find the entrance to the slot canyon as the trail is not clearly marked. There are two slot canyons to explore: the Peek-a-boo and Spooky Gulch which are located near each other and can be combined for a fun loop hike.
We started our Grand Staircase Escalante adventure in the town of Boulder, Utah where we visited the Anasazi State Park Museum: and explored the landscape along the Burr Trail (which leads from Boulder to Glen Canyon), then indulged in a delicious Farm to Table dinner at Hell's Backbone Grill:
The next day we made our way along the stunning Utah Scenic Byway 12 from Boulder to Escalante, stopped at the beautiful Kiva Coffeehouse: for breakfast and enjoyed stunning view. From there we drove to the trailhead and hiked to Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-boo Gulch for a fun day of exploring and hiking the surrounding landscape.
We fell in love with the landscape at Grand Staircase Escalante and highly recommend a visit!

Calf Creek Falls | Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument 4K
#grandstaircaseescalante #grandstaircasehikes #calfcreek
The trail to Calf Creek Falls may be the most popular hike in Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It's a stunning trek through stunning desert canyons capped by one of the prettiest waterfalls we've encountered.
Along with Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante may be the most contested swath of public land in the United States.
With recent reductions and the desire of many for a full restoration of the original monument boundaries being hotly debated it's never been more important to Leave No Trace.
The ultimate fate of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is uncertain. With limited resources to protect the land, it is essential for all visitors to do their best to leave this desert wonderland as pristine as possible.
What are your thoughts? Should the reductions stand or should Utah's monuments be restored? Leave a comment below.
Trailhead: Calf Creek Campground parking area
Difficulty: Moderate

Live #12 - Escalante Slot Canyons, USA
I only ended up in Escalante, Utah, because it became too dark to hitch hike to my final destination. The lady giving me a ride was so nice to offer me her spare house to sleep in and also told me about the Slot canyons in the area, which was perfect news for me after having missed the famous Antelope Slot Canyon. I ended up staying two nights to explore the Zebra, Dry Fork, Peek-A-Boo & Spooky Slot Canyons.
