St. Louis History - Tower Grove Park
I think most of us have driven through the park, driven by the park, picnicked in the park, enjoyed festivals in the park and it really is one of the real jewels in the metropolitan region.
Tower Grove Park takes its name from Tower Grove House, the country home of Henry Shaw, located on land that would eventually become the Missouri Botanical Garden.
But Shaw had also had ideas beyond his garden gate.
It really was a part of Shaw’s dream to create an English garden-like Country Park and the 280 some acre Tower Grove Park was his answer.
Shaw filled the park with more than 8000 trees and shrubs from around the world and included a system of winding roads to give visitors beautiful vistas at every turn.
One thing I think a lot of people don`t realize is that Shaw also owned property surrounding the park and in the earliest days he thought that he could develop small homes around the park and that those homes would become a source of revenue to support the park. That dream never materialized but certainly his dream of a park did materialize and it is a testimony to good management and citizen interest that the park probably looks better today than it has since its heyday.
In 1868, when Shaw donated the park to the City of St. Louis, the land sat outside what was then the city's western edge. So it has always been governed by a state board, appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court.
Cruisin' through...Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, MO
I didn't set out to make this video, but I found this long-revered city park looking nicer than I can remember. Only about 1/4 of this park is in this film, but the pavement, curbing and shelters I could see were all in very good shape. I'm most impressed about the curbs.
Song is: Morning Mood by Edvard Grieg, in case its familiarity was driving you crazy.

St. Louis is a major city in Missouri along the Mississippi River. Its iconic, 630-ft. Gateway Arch, built in the 1960s, honors the early 19th-century explorations of Lewis and Clark and America's westward expansion in general. Replica paddlewheelers ply the river, offering views of the arch. The Soulard district is home to barbecue restaurants and clubs playing blues music.
St. Louis, the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, is a major midwestern metropolis filled with culture. St. Louis planners have created an aesthetically beautiful city with green space at the street level. It is said that St. Louis is second only to Washington, D.C. in the number of free activities available in an American city. The Gateway Arch, the world's tallest man-made monument, forms a triumphant city skyline. An open mall surrounded by reflecting pools leads up to the historic court house, the site of the Dred Scott decision, facing the Gateway Arch.
The city is named after King Louis IX of France. St. Louis is known by the nickname of The Gateway to the West. The city was the last major stop before pioneers journeyed Westward to the Pacific coast. The city also played a large part during the steamboat era due to its position at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Missouri River. St. Louis was acquired from France by the United States during President Thomas Jefferson's term in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The transfer of power from Spain was made official in a ceremony called, Three Flags Day. On March 8, 1804, the Spanish flag was lowered and the French one raised. On March 10, the French flag was replaced by that of the USA. In 1904, St. Louis hosted that year's World's Fair and the Summer Olympic Games. Many of the parks, buildings, and finer homes in St. Louis were built around this time period. While there are few, if any, living residents who attended the Fair, it holds an important place in the modern development of the city.
Slide into St Louis and revel in the unique vibe of the largest city in the Great Plains. Beer, bowling and baseball are some of the top attractions, but history and culture, much of it linked to the Mississippi River, are a vital part of the fabric. And, of course, there's the iconic Gateway Arch that you have seen in a million pictures; it's even more impressive in reality. Many music legends, including Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, Tina Turner and Miles Davis, got their start here and jammin' live-music venues keep the flame burning.

STL Live - 2017 Solar Eclipse
A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun and on Monday, August 21, we will witness this once in a lifetime event in St. Louis. This will be first total solar eclipse visible in the United States in 38 years, so we have a few suggestions on the best viewing possible.
The full eclipse will last upwards of 3 hours from beginning to end, but total eclipse is only for 2 minutes 41 seconds, but depending on your location it can be much shorter. Some St. Louis City residents in areas like Tower Grove, The Hill or Bevo will have a view of the eclipse, but if you are located above Interstate 64, you should look for an alternate viewing location to the west or north. For example, St. Clair, Missouri will see the longest total solar eclipse for the full 2 minutes, 40 seconds, but those viewing in Benton Park will see it for only 11 seconds.
To fully view the eclipse you will need protection from the sun’s rays. Check with libraries, museums, schools, astronomy clubs or science centers for eclipse glasses and remember that any eyewear you purchase for yourself should by ISO-123122 compliant. The St. Louis Science Center is currently selling these glasses for an affordable price while supplies last.
There are several viewing parties happening around St. Louis, including at the St. Louis Science Center, where you can enjoy food, fun, demonstrations and during the eclipse, Planetarium educators will describe what is happening.
To find eclipse maps, a list of viewing parties and where to buy protective glasses visit For more information on the St. Louis Science Center’s eclipse events, visit slsc.org.
