History Made As Pulaski County Designated First Purple Heart County in Missouri
History Made As Pulaski County Designated First Purple Heart County in MO
Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Missouri, Everett Kelly made his third trip to Pulaski County in as many months on March 25, 2013 to present Pulaski County Commissioners with a plaque and flag recognizing the county as a Purple Heart County. Pulaski County is the first county in Missouri to receive this designation, joining in the states effort to honor those veterans who have been wounded or killed while in military service to our country. The declaration follows legislative action which made Missouri's entire sections of Interstate 44 and 70 a Purple Heart Trail.
A Purple Heart County is a community with great admiration and gratitude for the men and women who have served this country.
Commander Kelly, a two-time Purple Heart recipient, along with other Purple Heart recipients, a color guard, and Presiding Pulaski County Commissioner Gene Newkirk raised the County's Purple Heart flag above the courthouse.
Commander Kelly had previously journeyed to Pulaski County to designate the City of St. Robert and the City of Waynesville as Purple Heart Cities. St. Robert received its designation January 7, 2013, and sister city Waynesville, received its designation March 21, 2013.
The Purple Heart Trail was established in 1992 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart to be a symbolic trail throughout all 50 states to commemorate and honor all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
The Purple Heart Trail originates in Mount Vernon, Va., and traverses the United States to California.
The designation of both St. Robert and Waynesville as Purple Heart Cities, in addition to Pulaski County being recognized as a Purple Heart County, is another indicator of the prevalent patriotism that runs deep in Pulaski County USA.

Abandoned Route 66 Famous Hooker Cut-Missouri 1943 four lane highway? Read Why!!
Also Check Out: stuffthatsgone.com I have stepped out of my normal Pennsylvania things that are abandoned mode and have arrived on one of the most famous four lane highway sections in the US, on Route 66 Pulaski County Missouri, Hooker Cut. One of the earlier alignments was so dangerous, they referred to is as the Devils Elbow. That alignment was no longer used after 1941. Due to having to cut through solid rock to form a new alignment, it was decided that this section of Route 66 should be made a four-lane highway, unheard of for the times. The cut they made was the deepest ever attempted and referred to afterward as the Hooker Cut possibly after a nearby town, competing with the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Little Panama near Bedford for the deepest cut attempted in highway construction. One of the most scenic drives on Route 66, that was built to carry traffic to and from Fort Leonard Wood during World War II. The first twisting, narrow stretch of Route 66 through Devil's Elbow was obviously not adequate for the many moving men and equipment and the new four lane stretch was completed in 1943. Today, most of this old four-lane is still original and is in very good condition considering its age. Passing through the steep bluffs of the Big Piney River, the Hooker Cut was one of the deepest road cuts in the nation at the time of its construction.
Interestingly, the curbs along this stretch of road are inclined towards the roadway. This was a common building practice at the time, as it was believed that such a design would keep cars from going off the road. However, they soon found out that the curb design actually caused cars to overturn and was soon discontinued.
This section is easily asscessable and travelled by Rt 66 geeks like myself, but today it was for all intents and purposes, abandoned. It was bypassed when Interstate 44 was built in the 1960's. What a great movie set!!!
Let the arguments begin--was this first or was the PA turnpike the first four lane? I know, it opened on October 1, 1940 and was continuous, limited access...so perhaps we give a nod to the turnpike. My lifeline dream to trace Rt 66 in missouri is now complete!!!

Devils Elbow on Route 66 (Missouri)
Devils Elbow, Missouri is an unincorporated community in Pulaski County on historic U.S. Highway 66. It is situated on the Big Piney River and was named for a particularly bad place in the river known as a devil of an elbow. It is about five miles (8 km) east of St. Robert.
The community still has a post office and zip code; along with Laquey, it is one of only two unincorporated places in Pulaski County to retain a post office.

Dogpatch USA Theme Park | Abandoned Amusement Park | Arkansas | USA | HD
Dogpatch USA was a former theme park located in northwest Arkansas along State Highway 7 between the cities of Harrison and Jasper, an area known today as Marble Falls. It was opened in 1968, and was based on the comic strip Li'l Abner, created by cartoonist Al Capp and set in a fictional village called Dogpatch. The property that comprised Dogpatch USA was leased in late 2017 to Heritage USA, Inc. and is being renovated to become the site of production and broadcast studios, and an RV park, hotel, theater and theme park. The new park is named Heritage USA Ozarks Resort at Historic Dogpatch, and is currently open while undergoing renovations.
