The historic centre of Avignon, which includes the Palais des Papes, the cathedral, and the Pont d'Avignon, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The medieval monuments and the annual Festival d'Avignon have helped to make the town a major centre for tourism.

Things to do in Avignon, France: 2 minute guide to the top attractions
Visitor Vids tourist guide to Avignon, France. Make the most of your day out with our two minute guide to the top visitor attractions in Avignon.
Avignon, a UNESCO world heritage medieval city in South-Eastern France, sits on the banks of the river Rhone.
In 1309 the city was chosen by Pope Clement V as his residence and until 1377, Avignon rather than Rome was the seat of the Papacy. The Popes’ Palace, Le Palais des Papes built in the 14th century, stands as a formidable monument to the importance of Avignon in the Christian world. In the middle ages it was the biggest gothic building in all Europe.
In the vast esplanade next to this structure lies the Little Palace – named Le Petit Palais to distinguish from the Palais des Papes, which was built around 1318 to 1320. Today it houses an important museum and art gallery. Next to this and also worth a visit is the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-Des-Doms.
Stroll from the cathedral inside the lush gardens of Rocher des Doms whose rock cliffs afford a fantastic view of the medieval city ramparts and the city’s iconic monument, Saint Benezet Bridge and the river Rhone.
Enjoy a refreshment by the cool ponds with their ducks and swans and watch children having fun peddling the pony carts.
Saint Benezet Bridge, Avignon’s iconic 12th-century bridge, is immortalised in the famous song: ‘Sur Le Pont, d’Avignon’. Built between 1177 and 1185, the bridge was destroyed forty years later and rebuilt with 22 stone arches. It became very costly to maintain as the arches tended to collapse when the Rhône flooded and eventually in the middle of the 17th century the bridge was abandoned. The four surviving arches on the bank of the Rhône are believed to have been built in around 1345 by Pope Clement V1 during the Avignon Papacy.
Today the historic centre of Avignon radiates from the Place de l’Horloge with its City Hall, lively cafes and restaurants. A stroll around the historic centre will take you past pretty squares, museums, the shady Rue des Teinturiers next to the river Sorgue, a wide selection of shops, restaurants and cafes. Take a walk across today’s modern bridge over the Rhone and look back at the beautiful medieval city.
Avignon, France - pedestrian zone
Continuing our visit to Provence, France. We're going to take you on an extended walk through the pedestrian zone and narrow streets on the east side of downtown Avignon, in the south of France, an area filled with shops, people and historic buildings. The only way to see this part of town is by walking. Old town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes and narrow residential streets with little back alleys, perfect for strolling.
Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, no cars allowed, especially in the shopping center just southeast of the Place de l’Horloge. It's like one big shopping mall. And this historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about 1/2 mile wide and about 1/2 mile long.

Commune in France
Avignon, a city in southeastern France’s Provence region, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes.
It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city center, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.
