If you want to find cultural richness in Ecuador, there is no better place to visit than Cuenca. UNESCO designated the city Cultural Patrimony of Humanity on December 1, 1999, and later in July 2001, Cuenca received the title of the Cultural Capital of the Americas for the year 2002.
Parque Calderón is Cuenca’s central plaza and the spot around which city life revolves. The impressive New Cathedral, with its massive blue domes, dominates the square. On the opposite side, stands the proud Old Cathedral which dates back to 1557 when the city was founded.
Another interesting thing to check out here is Panama Hat Factory. Would you ever guess that Panama hats are not made in Panama? Well, it’ true, they are made here, in Ecuador! The factory on Avenida Gil Ramírez Dávalos, near the bus station, crafts some of Ecuador’s finest hats.

The most beautiful city in Ecuador: Cuenca, Azuay Province
Cuenca (or Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca) is the capital of Azuay Province and is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as the most European Ecuadorian city due to the abundance of Spanish colonial architecture. Cuenca is located in Ecuador's highlands at about 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) in elevation and is known for Panama hats (paja toquilla), the Barranco or Tomebamba River waterfront, and the abundance of colonial churches, including the Catedral Vieja (Old Cathedral) and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception).
Some other nearby attractions that you will not want to miss include the Cajas National Park, the Girón Falls (el Chorro de Girón), the town of SigSig for Panama Hats, and the town of Chordeleg for handmade jewelry.

10. Guayaquil
As Ecuador’s largest city with almost 2.7 million people, Guayaquil is the commercial heart of Ecuador. Located on the banks of the Guayas River that leads to the Pacific Ocean, the city was founded in 1538 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana. The Parque Historico Guayaqui offers colonial buildings, lush gardens and animals native to the country; visitors especially like the free admission.

Mindo offers environmentally conscious travelers the best of two biodiversified ecosystems: the tropical Andes and the Chocoan lowlands. Here, visitors will see cloud forests, farmlands, three major rivers and hundreds of streams. One of Ecuador’s most popular tourist destinations, Mindo provides a wide variety of outdoor activities ranging from rafting and bird-watching to mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking.

Salinas is the westernmost city in Ecuador, sitting on the Pacific Ocean, which makes it popular with surfers and yachters. Ecuador’s most popular beach resort city offers some great beaches. It is known as Little Miami Beach because of its high-rise condominiums dotting the shoreline.

It is widely regarded as the most European city in Ecuador due to its 16th and 17th century era Spanish colonial architecture resembling cities and architecture throughout Spain. The city of Cuenca is located in the highlands of Ecuador at about 2,560 metres (8,400 feet) above sea level, with an urban population of approximately 400,000 rising to 700,000 inhabitants in the larger metropolitan area. Cuenca is a vibrant colonial city in southern Ecuador, and the capital of Azuay Province. Cuenca lies in a valley at about 2,500m (8,200 ft), and is home to around 450,000 people. Its moderate climate makes it enjoyable year round.
After Quito, Cuenca is Ecuador’s most important and beautiful colonial city. But don’t say that to the locals, who insist that their laid-back culture, cleaner streets and more agreeable weather outclass the capital, hands down.
Dating from the 16th century, Cuenca’s historic center, a Unesco World Heritage Site with its trademark skyline of massive rotundas and soaring steeples, is a place time keeps forgetting: nuns march along cobblestone streets, kids in Catholic-school uniforms skip past historic churches, and old ladies spy on promenading lovers from their geranium-filled balconies. The city is the center of many craft traditions, including ceramics, metalwork and the internationally famous panama hat – and the nearby villages offer many more handicrafts besides.
Central Cuenca is easily walkable, and it is often faster than taking a cab through the narrow traffic-jammed lanes. Cabs are readily available and charge $2-3 ($1 more at night) per trip. All yellow taxis are required to use taxi-meters. City buses are also fairly easy to figure out. Most bus stops are marked. The cost is $0.30 per ride. Since April 2018 the only way to pay the fare is with the 'movilízate' card, which costs $1.75. You need to charge it before entering the bus. Cuenca is a very bike-friendly city.
Cuenca is a city known for its textile making, along with furniture and other crafts like hats and shoes. They also export many flowers to places such as the United States and countries in Europe. The hats that they are well known for making are straw hats. The tourism industry is big as well in addition with the main university there, “La Universidad de Cuenca”. Cuenca has many cathedrals there that are a part of the sightseeing as well as other national parks.
Buy some flowers at the flower market on Calle Sucre across from the new cathedral. Continue on about a block from there to get to the clothing and artisan market where one can also find knit crafts from Otavalo. Lovely handmade ruanas, sweaters, hats, mittens, and finger puppets are also available here.

Most tourists visit the historic area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between the river Tomebamba and the street Gran Colombia to the north, General Torres to the west, and Hermano Miguel to the east. This area's compactness, grid-like layout, and numerous readily identifiable monuments make it easy to navigate. Outside this area the city can be confusing, as there are dozens of narrow colonial streets with similar buildings.
Major fiestas of Cuenca come at the time of the Mass of Children that is carried out the day of the Arrival of Kings (January 6 - Epiphany Day), or in the commemoration of the independence of the city (November 3), during which processions, cultural acts and dances are organized. The nearby Cañar plantation (in the county of the same name) features the biggest Inca ruins in Ecuador.

HUALTACO: LAST RELIC OF MANGROVES IN ECUADOR (4K drone video)
The mangrove is a biome formed by trees very tolerant to the brackish waters of the intertidal zone near the mouth of freshwater courses in tropical and subtropical latitudes. Separated by estuaries that form water channels where the fresh water of the rivers and the salt water of the ocean are mixed. This biome harbors a great biological diversity with high productivity, finding many species of birds, fish, crustaceans, molluscs and others, being an engine of the economy through the use of the existing resources.
Its name derives from the trees that form them, mangroves, the word mangle (from which mangrove is derived in German, French and English) comes from a Caribbean voice or Arahuaca, which means twisted tree.
They are great barriers that prevent the natural erosion of the ocean, besides being the habitat of numerous species.
Unfortunately, the Mangrove is one of the most disturbed biotypes in Ecuador, due to the intense growth of shrimp farms, which have implacably turned large areas of Mangrove forest into small strips that appear to be continuous from the ground, but with the eyes of Quilico , the reality is different.
This video shows fragments of a population that has tried to live in harmony with the mangrove, on the Ecuador - Peru border. It is Puerto Hualtaco, located in the Huaquillas county of the province of El Oro. On the Peruvian side is the Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary and on the Ecuadorian side, a few communities such as Costa Rica or San Gregorio have bet on ecotourism as an economical activity parallel to fishing.
