Australia’s Puffing Billy Railway 2019 – Part 1 – Belgrave to Lakeside
No visit to Melbourne, Australia would be complete without taking a trip through the Dandenong Ranges aboard a beautifully restored railway carriage hauled by a Puffing Billy steam locomotive. The line can be reached by a direct train from Melbourne to Belgrave station, just a short walk from the Puffing Billy station.
Billed as Australia’s premiere tourist railway, the Puffing Billy is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge heritage railway located in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne. The railway was originally one of five narrow gauge lines opened by Victorian Railways around the beginning of the 20th century.
Most trains start from Belgrave and travel to Lakeside, or the terminus at Gembrook, passing through the Wright State Forest, composed mainly of Tree Ferns, Mountain Grey Gum and other Eucalypt Trees. Please join me for a trip along this unique railway to see for yourself the amazing locomotives, scenery and wildlife.

I would like to express my special thanks to Puffin Pete for treating my sister and I to a trip along the line with ample opportunities for photography and a look inside the signal box at Menzies Creek. I would also like to thank Jeff Evans for his hospitality, driving us to a number of locations including Lakeside to photograph and watch trains making their leisurely way between stations.
We also owe the friendly staff and volunteers a massive thank-you for making this a very special visit, with their warm welcome and help in capturing this memorable railway on film.

A Tourist in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley (Australia)
Melbourne is a hub airport for Quantas and Emirates, an ideal opportunity for travellers to break their journey and visit some of the local attractions, such as the wonderful sandy beaches of Port Phillip Bay, sample a glass or two at one of the Yarra Valley wineries, take a trip on a steam train, or maybe ride one of the vintage trams around the city. Visit a zoo to get close to some of the colorful wildlife, there is even a chocolate factory with a cafe where customers can choose from an amazing array of candy, cakes, ice-cream, snacks and beverages. The riverside walkways are lined with cafes, bars and intriguing artwork. Board one of the river boats for an alternative view of the city’s attractive high rise skyline. The “Melbourne Star Observation Wheel” offers stunning aerial views over the city and surrounding suburbs, along with a commentary outlining the history of the area, as well as pointing out some of the more notable landmarks. Public transport is good with one of the largest, if not the largest tram network in the world, there are regular commuter trains out to the leafy suburbs such as Belgrave, for a trip on the delightful Puffing Billy railway where passengers can ride through the tall eucalyptus trees and ferns of the Wright Forest in a vintage railway carriage pulled by a centenarian steam locomotive. With so much to see and do, Melbourne is well worth a visit.

Puffing Billy (Full Line) Belgrave to Gembrook
(Best watched in 1080p HD) In September 2018, we took the opportunity to ride the entire length of Victoria’s famous Puffing Billy Railway, from Belgrave to Gembrook, high up in the Dandenong Ranges. Completed in 1900, the 2 foot 6 inch gauge Gembrook line originally ran from Upper Ferntree Gulley. It was built to serve the otherwise isolated communities dotted around the Range and the daily ‘mixed’ trains would carry livestock and farm produce as well as passengers. Sacks of potatoes were a particularly common commodity, with wagons being loaded at Cockatoo sidings. On arrival at Ferntree Gully, they would be transhipped onto the adjacent broad gauge line for onward carriage to the markets in Melbourne. Victorian Railways produced a fleet of NA class narrow gauge locos which were shared between the Gembrook line and three other narrow gauge railways in Victoria. From the outset however, the Gembrook line was popular with tourists, and from 1900 to this day, those same locos, now over 100 years old, have been making the trek into the ranges with trainloads of excited visitors. Unfortunately, landslides in 1952 and 1953 threatened the lines existence. VR deemed it to be uneconomic and sought to close it down. Public opposition was incredibly strong and in 1955, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society took over the operation. Following extension of the electric train service along the old track bed from Ferntree Gulley, Puffing Billy established a new base at Belgrave, the now terminus for Metro services from Melbourne. In 1998, they finally achieved their goal of reopening through to Gembrook, the original terminus, although at the time of our visit, only one train a day ventured over the entire 24km length of the line. It’s that train that we rode! So join us for what has to be one of the greatest narrow gauge journeys in the world. Hauled by 1901 built loco number 6A, we leave Belgrave at 11:10 and travel through thick forest, over wooden trestle bridges and across picturesque farmland before arriving at the wonderful village of Gembrook at 13:00. The journey involves several steep climbs and twisting curves, and the vintage 2-6-2 tank loco has to work hard to maintain its schedule.
