TRAVEL AUSTRALIA 4 MARYSVILLE
Driving south from the Gold Coast on the New England Highway in 2010 the land was so green and often the fields were full of yellow or white dandelions, We travel through the Yarra Valley where the devasting fires of Black Saturday reaked havoc and destruction resulting in the loss of many lives both human and wildlife. In this video we also take a look at the Healsville Sanctuary and introduce you to some of Australias wildlife, including the Platypus first bred here by David Fleay.

The Black Spur Drive close to Melbourne: Fern Trees in the Eucalyptus Forest
The Black Spur Drive connects Healesville with Narbethong on the Maroondah Highway:
In the Yarra Ranges National Park close to Melbourne Australia you can find one of the tallest trees of the world: Eucalyptus nitens, commonly known as Shining Gum.
This Eucalypt species is native to Victoria and eastern New South Wales, Australia. It grows in wet forests and rainforest margins on fertile soils in cool high-rainfall areas.
Eucalyptus nitens is a tall to very tall forest tree growing to 60 m, in Victoria occasionally to 90 m tall. Bark is persistent on lower trunk, grey to grey-brown, fibrous-flaky, smooth above, white, grey or yellow, shedding in long ribbons. The juvenile leaves are opposite, ovate to elliptic, cordate, glaucous, and the adult leaves narrow-lanceolate or lanceolate, 15–25 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, green, glossy, concolorous. The inflorescence is 7 flowered, the peduncle narrowly flattened or angular, 6–15 mm long. Buds are sessile, ovoid or cylindrical, 5–7 mm long, 3–4 mm in diameter, the ring scar caused by shedding of outer operculum is present; the calyptra is conical, acute or obtuse, shorter than and as wide as hypanthium. The fruit is cylindrical or ovoid, 4–7 mm long, 4–6 mm in diameter; the disc is depressed and the valves enclosed or rim-level.
In Tasmania Eucalyptus nitens is one of the most important plantation tree species along with Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian Blue Gum) and Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine). The timber is mainly used in general construction but is beginning to be used in furniture where the discolourations may be a feature.
Cyathea cunninghamii, also known as the gully tree fern and slender tree fern, is a species of tree fern native to Victoria, New South Wales, southeastern Queensland and Tasmania in Australia, as well as North Island, South Island and Chatham Islands in New Zealand (and possibly New Caledonia also). It grows in damp forest, often emerging from stream gullies and riverbanks. The erect trunk may be 20 m tall and is usually 6-15 cm in diameter, occasionally as much as 20 cm. Fronds are tri- to tetrapinnate and 3 m or more in length. The rachis and stipe are slender, black brown, warty and covered with brown scales. Sori occur along each side of the pinnule midvein and are covered by hood-like indusia.
