Belle Fourche - South Dakota
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate made a stop in Belle Fourche to stand in the center of the US. Belle Fourche South Dakota is the geographical center of the United States and home to the Black Hills Round-Up. The city of Belle Fourche established the tri-state museum that features antiques and memorabilia from a by-gone era. Adjacent to the museum is a park, including picnic tables, a large grass area, flags from all 50 states, and a monument marking the center of the United States. Belle Fourche is located in northern South Dakota in the Black Hills, just north of Spearfish Canyon. Cheap Family Travel enjoyed a nice picnic lunch and visiting this uniquely special place.

While South Dakota may be known as The Mount Rushmore State, there’s so much more to explore in this Midwestern jewel than rock faces and prairie lands. Steeped in Native American history and fresh with the footprints of legendary pioneers, it offers something for history buffs, adventure-seekers, and culture vultures, alike. Draw inspiration from the great American road trip, rent a classic car, check out the itinerary below, and follow the open road for this untamed state’s hidden gems.
Friday
The best way to take in this part of the country is from behind the wheel of a classic American car. Set off on an hour drive down I-90 to your first stop: Deadwood, the epitome of the wild, wild west. This historic gold-mining town nestled in the Black Hills offers everything from horse sanctuaries to hiking, mining museums to iconic casinos, so take your pick for a packed day. After a long day in the gold gulch, the road is calling once again. Head south on US-385 through the dense green of Black Hills National Forest, towards President Calvin Coolidge’s “Summer White House” — the State Game Lodge in Custer.
Saturday
Start your day at sunrise with Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln — only a 40-minute drive from Custer. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum’s stone masterpiece — the majestic Mount Rushmore National Memorial — has become a beloved symbol of America, and seeing the early golden light sweep across the founding fathers’ faces is enough to make anyone a morning person. When your jaws have sufficiently dropped, let the good times roll in Badlands National Park. 1.5 hours east of Rushmore, the rugged beauty of the national park inspires adventure, and her maze of buttes, spires, and pinnacles provide a striking backdrop to a hike or scenic drive. By now it’s mid-afternoon, and there’s only one place to quench your thirst, satiate your curiosity, and have lunch — Wall Drug. The quirky little roadside attraction is situated just outside Badland’s northern gateway. The pharmacy-come-rest stop earned much of its fame from a self-promotion scheme started by original owners Dorothy and Ted Hustead. Billboards advertising the establishment and “FREE ICE WATER” to thirsty travelers can be seen throughout South Dakota, its neighboring states, and as far as Morocco, Amsterdam, and London, informing commuters that Wall Drug is only a few thousand kilometers away.
Sunday
Spend your final morning in Custer at one with nature and gear up for a game drive in the park. Keep your eyes peeled for celebrity state critters — pronghorns, elk, and buffalo. Before heading back to Rapid City, let your last stop be as awe-inspiring as it is important. Half an hour from the State Game Lodge in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills stands another stone masterpiece in the making — Crazy Horse Memorial. In 1948, Polish-American mountain carver Korczak Ziolkowski began sculpting the colossal tribute. Since his passing in 1982, multiple generations of his family have taken over, wielding the chisel and etching the family’s legacy. In its evolving glory — including a museum, a cultural center, and The Indian University of North America — it preserves the heritage of Native Americans and celebrates the heroic acts of Tasunke “Crazy Horse” Witco of the Oglala Lakota tribe. If completed as planned, it will be the world’s second tallest sculpture at a whopping 563 feet high and depict the war leader riding a horse and pointing into the distance.

PLAYLISTS
Did you know I have a playlist of tech videos from my van build?
I also have a playlist of just travel videos if you don't like all the tech stuff:
============================
I left the rat race to live full time on the road and so can you! The key to freedom is to lower your expenses. In my former life, I managed a company that struggled to stay out of the red. This is where I learned to hone my frugality skills and use them to my own advantage by becoming a minimalist at home. The biggest expense we all have living in a sticks and bricks is our rent or mortgage. We work most of our adult lives to make a bank or landlord / landlady rich! With ever increasing real estate prices and stagnant wages the cost of living has skyrocketed. Many can barely make ends meet and live paycheck to paycheck. You can stop the madness by thinking outside the box and joining this growing movement of full-timers that enjoy van-dwelling or RV living. If you dream about a life of travel you can do it incredibly cheap just by downsizing your lifestyle into a RV or van tiny house and becoming mobile.
In this series, I go from a home in the Los Angeles hills packed full of stuff and owning two cars to full-timing in a Roadtrek campervan in less than 6 months. I buy an old camper van on Craigslist and deck it out just like home with all kinds of technology to make life comfortable on the road. I hope to encourage those that think they can't do it by showing how it CAN be done by planning carefully and taking baby steps.

Geographic Center of the U.S., rattlesnakes, and Sheepherder's Monuments
Hiked my way to the top of what I thought would be the Marker for the Geographic Center of the United States, only to find Sheepherder's Monument (13 miles North of Belle Fourche, South Dakota on highway 85). Come to find out, this spot was at one time used for both monuments but the Department of the Interior closed the site due to a rattlesnake infestation in the mid-1990's. Good thing I made the hike during the winter. Ahhhh!!!
Corn Palace
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate stopped off at the famous Mitchell Corn Palace. Among South Dakota attractions, the Mitchell South Dakota Corn Palace is one of those places off the beaten path that will create great memories for the entire family. The Corn Palace South Dakota was built to attract visitors to Mitchell South Dakota, and the building has become a popular place for tourists and for natives of South Dakota. The walls of palace are decorated with huge, beautiful, unique murals that are made from thousands of corn cobs and husks. The palace has been home to concerts by the biggest names in music, local and state basketball games, and a daily gift shop. For that one-of-a-kind vacation, the Mitchell Corn Palace is a fun place to bring your family, and it's not far from your visits to the Badlands of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and Sioux Falls.
Spearfish Canyon
Recorded July 16, 2014
This is a scenic drive in the Black Hills of South Dakota just south of the town of Spearfish. During the drive I stopped at Roughlock Falls and Bridalveil Falls.

The Geographic Center Of The United States
Discover the scenic side of life at Maybe you've never thought about where the center of the 48 contiguous United States would be if it was an equal thickness cardboard cut-out and balanced on a pole to find the center. In 1918 some folks did just that and found it to be near Lebanon, Kansas. Now you know! People stop by daily to check it out, according to the volunteer on duty the day we did just that.
